Hot 97 radio personality Ebro Darden once said Doja Cat’s rapping abilities were “top notch,” but Remy Ma refuses to call her a rapper. During an interview with Drink Champs‘ DJ EFN and N.O.R.E., the Terror Squad MC promptly put N.O.R.E. in his place when he referred to the “Say So” artist as a “rapper.”

“I don’t think she’s a rapper,” Remy Ma interjected. “Let’s be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”

Remy Ma’s comments sparked a cascade of varying responses on Twitter. Some people were baffled by Remy’s remarks, while others wholeheartedly agreed with her.

“Is Doja Cat a rapper?” one person wrote. “mmm nah wouldn’t necessarily say that however she does rap alot of verses over pop beats. Sooo gotta agree with Remy Ma. She def dope af tho,” while another said, “Y’all have to understand where Remy Ma is coming from. She grew up in a time where artists were rapping, not singing. Doja Cat’s music is more pop than rap, and that’s a fact.”

Some were even angry over the interview, with one writing, “Remy Ma saying Doja Cat isnt a rapper just pissed me off. Bitch are YOU a rapper? What was the last song YOU released?”

Remy Ma’s latest album was a compilation with Fat Joe called Plata O Plomo. Released in 2017, the project debuted at No. 44 on the Billboard 200, No. 19 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 3 on the Independent Albums charts.

Doja Cat’s latest project, Planet Her, dropped in June 2021 with features Young Thug, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, JID and SZA. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 where it remained for three consecutive weeks. Although Doja often raps on her songs, there’s no denying she leans more toward the pop side.
