Remy Ma Sparks Twitter War After She Says Doja Cat Isn’t A Rapper

Hot 97 radio personality Ebro Darden once said Doja Cat’s rapping abilities were “top notch,” but Remy Ma refuses to call her a rapper. During an interview with Drink Champs‘ DJ EFN and N.O.R.E., the Terror Squad MC promptly put N.O.R.E. in his place when he referred to the “Say So” artist as a “rapper.”

“I don’t think she’s a rapper,” Remy Ma interjected. “Let’s be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”

Remy Ma’s comments sparked a cascade of varying responses on Twitter. Some people were baffled by Remy’s remarks, while others wholeheartedly agreed with her.

“Is Doja Cat a rapper?” one person wrote. “mmm nah wouldn’t necessarily say that however she does rap alot of verses over pop beats. Sooo gotta agree with Remy Ma. She def dope af tho,” while another said, “Y’all have to understand where Remy Ma is coming from. She grew up in a time where artists were rapping, not singing. Doja Cat’s music is more pop than rap, and that’s a fact.”

Some were even angry over the interview, with one writing, “Remy Ma saying Doja Cat isnt a rapper just pissed me off. Bitch are YOU a rapper? What was the last song YOU released?”

Remy Ma’s latest album was a compilation with Fat Joe called Plata O Plomo. Released in 2017, the project debuted at No. 44 on the Billboard 200, No. 19 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 3 on the Independent Albums charts.

Doja Cat’s latest project, Planet Her, dropped in June 2021 with features Young Thug, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, JID and SZA. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 where it remained for three consecutive weeks. Although Doja often raps on her songs, there’s no denying she leans more toward the pop side.

Whatever the case, Twitter erupted with reactions to Remy Ma’s opinion. Check some of them out below.

    1. Whether or not Doja Cat is a rapper is debatable. She probably doesn’t even wanna be labeled as a rapper because let’s not forget, there was a time that she didn’t wanna be labeled as being black and rap music is synonymous with black culture. But whoever thinks that Doja cat can out rap Remy is down right dumb. Not even a competition

      1. Rap is the biggest genre in music. Everyone wants to be labeled a rapper. Some of you don’t realize how far these corporations have taken it to the mainstream. Suburban white moms listen to this shit when they’re picking up their kids from soccer practice and have no attachment to what we grew up on. Rap star is the new rock star. All you need is Pro Tools or Fruity Loops and some ideas. No real talent necessary. Nine out of 10 of these people don’t even have music backgrounds these days like before.

    2. Just like five years ago…Remy droppin’ STRAIGHT-UP FACTS.

Pop is cool, we still honor the kings and queens of pop…but if you wanna be called a rapper, HIP-HOP should be what you’re about.

    3. Doja Cat is a singer who sometimes raps. We had a few of those back in the day, most notably Montell Jordan. But I hate how young people call singing “rap”. I put young thug, lil baby, trippie redd, and torey lanez in the same catagory of singers that occasionally rap. Lil Durk and Polo G are a step away from being in that catagory, but they lean towards being rappers who occasionally sing. Now why singing is considered gangsta all of a sudden is beyond me.

    4. The fact that this is considered a controversial opinion is proof that people are on average dumber than hell.

    5. People are the real reason why most of these so-called beef start. Remy said what she said cause it’s her opinion! Nothing wrong with her having an opinion. Ya’ll so miserable in your own life that you have to make up a problem to start something with someone else. Grown up already, she didn’t diss the girl, she just gave HER opinion!

    6. Just looking at these weirdo dudes from twitter quoted in the article should tell you the state of hip hop. Y’all lame as fuck. This woman is a pop artist. Remy is a real rapper. It’s no debate fuck outta here

    7. I’ll be honest………..People love to bash baby boomers with the “ok boomer” shit..and I get it. But it’s arguable that late born Millennials and Gen Z are literally RUINING rap music, and hip hop…20 years from now rap will be unrecognizable and people born after 1998 are solely responsible. NO RAP FAN EVER has said, Let me go get that Doja Cat, I bet she spittin….EVER. The only people who will buy a Doja Cat record are POP FANS………And secondly this has NOTHING to do with being a woman. I have streamed Meg’s Records (Because she snaps), I have streamed Nikki’s records because she RAPS, I even downloaded some of LightskinKiesha shit because she fucking raps… I BOUGHT lil Kim’s the naked Truth and Remy’s debut, because the fucking rapped…Doja Cat DOES NOT…….If you want to hear a woman really fucking snap. Go to Youtube and listen to Ms. Martin off of Big Pun’s album….SHE WENT DUMB…Doja could never…
