Yung Miami and JT — better known as the City Girls — have seen a meteoric rise to fame in the last year or so. In December 2021, they were honored at the Variety Hitmakers Party with the Future Is Female Award, five months after teaming up with Missy Elliott for the “Twerkultor” video, which has amassed over 12 million YouTube views since its release.
With all their accomplishments, they’ve yet to collaborate with the self-proclaimed Queen of Rap Nicki Minaj – but there’s a reason. In an interview with The Morning Hustle, Nicki revealed why she decided not to link up with the Florida duo, citing previous online comments from JT and Yung Miami that were critical of her.
“And the thing is whenever you post something on the internet it’s there forever, whenever you say something in an interview, it’s there forever,” she explained. “So as an artist and a human being first, if I, as a regular human, was about to go to dinner with you tonight and then I get something that says, ‘Yo, she don’t really fuck with you like that, she was saying this and she don’t really like you, and she said she hopes you actually never pop or never flourish’… I’m not going out to dinner with you anymore because now I know that I like you but you really don’t like me.”

She added, “That’s just a human way to feel, if you hear somebody was saying things about you — not just one thing — but repeated things, repeated tweets for years, not just one thing … It’s let go. It’s let’s go, but it’s about, why would I work with somebody who doesn’t like me?”
In an August 2021 interview with GQ, JT expressed interest in working with Nicki Minaj with, “We’re hoping for it in the future, seriously. A lot of people try to make fun of it, like, ‘Ahhh, you’re never going to get your feature’ but you never know what can happen.” But City Girls also have other goals in mind. Speaking to Variety last November, JT revealed they have their sights set on a Grammy Award.

“I feel like it’s a new generation,” Yung Miami said at the time. “It’s a new era and I love to see all females winning—women is powerful. So just to be a part of it, just to be rapping, for our voices to be heard, I’m just thankful. It’s a wonderful feeling. I can’t even describe the feeling ‘cause I never thought I’d be here.”
JT added, “This is just a great time. I’m proud of all the women. I just want to work harder and make it a very City Girls year next year, maybe get nominated for a Grammy. I feel like this year was a little rusty because everybody was trying to figure out COVID-19, vaccines and all type of shit. But I just feel like next year it’ll be a smoother run. Fingers crossed.”
Nicki Minaj Promises Return Of 'Mixtape Nicki' On New Album: 'That's What's Needed Right Now'
Nicki Minaj is currently prepping her follow-up to 2018’s Queen. During a recent interview on Power 98.3’s The Dana Cortez Show, Nicki confirmed she’s heading back to the mixtape era.

“There’s a little bit of full-circledness happening, because I’m creating music kinda like how I used to create music when I first started rapping on mixtapes,” she said. “Which is just having a great experience, enjoying it, being in the moment, staying present in the moment and seeing what happens.”
She added, “Oh, you gotta get Mixtape Nicki! I just feel like that’s what’s needed right now. Like, oh my God! What I do is write raps that connect with people, that make people want to sign a long and channel their inner bad bitch … I love giving that good energy to people and make them feel like, ‘Yo, I’m speaking for you.’ You gonna get hints of other things, of course, but yes, you’re going to get that Mixtape Nicki.”
