Houston, TX

The celebratory energy was palpable at the Texas Southern University commencement ceremony on Saturday (December 11). The class of 843 graduates included Houston native Megan Thee Stallion, who has been touting her upcoming graduation for months. The university held two ceremonies – one at 9:30 a.m. and a second at 12:30 p.m. local time — and Megan let her fans know they could catch her at the latter.

“Hotties,” she tweeted alongside a link to the livestream. “You can watch me graduate today starting at 12:00.” She included two photos of herself posing on campus and throwing her custom “Real Hot Girl Shit” mortarboard hat in the air.

Right on schedule, Megan Thee Stallion — dressed in a traditional graduation gown and bedazzled mortarboard hat — joined the rest of the 2021 class at the school’s Health & Physical Education Arena. The TSU Instagram account shared a post of Megan walking hand-in-hand with TSU President Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young.

“TSU’s 13th President Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young with one of our newest graduates, Megan Pete aka Megan Thee Stallion,” the caption read. “#TSUProud #megantheestallion #tsugrad21

The TSU Special Events Instagram account also posted a clip of Megan walking toward the stage to receive her diploma. “All roads lead to #TxSu!! #graduation #classof2021.”

Before Megan Thee Stallion’s career took off, she was attending college at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, where she was planning on getting a degree in health administration. But once Megan blew up, she had to put her education on hold. A big part of her motivation to complete her degree was the March 2019 death of her mother.

“I want to get my degree because I really want my mom to be proud,” she told PEOPLE in June 2020. “I want my big mama to be proud. She saw me going to school before she passed. My grandmother that’s still alive used to be a teacher, so she’s on my butt about finishing school. I’m doing it for me, but I’m also doing it for the women in my family who made me who I am today.”

Megan Thee Stallion’s plan is to open a health facility in her hometown, which she told Billboard in 2018: “That’s still the plan. And you know how it’s so hard to get a job after college? So I thought it would be super easy for my classmates if I just opened up something that they could go get a job at.”
