Pets are typically an extension of someone’s family and when one of them dies, it feels like a gut punch to the stomach. So it’s no surprise Kid Cudi is in shambles after his beloved dog Freshie passed away last week.

According to a Twitter post from The Chosen One, Freshie died “peacefully at home, surrounded by the people that love him, his family.”

Cudi wrote, “I held his hand and whispered in his ear to let him know I was there while he slipped away. I told him was a special boy, my best friend, that he was perfect and that I loved him and I’ll miss him so much. I felt his last breath.”

As Kid Cudi explained in the post, he got Freshie in 2010 to prepare for an acting role in How To Make It In America. His character for the second season was a dog-walking, weed salesman, so he wanted to be “comfortable” around dogs. But Cudi soon learned Freshie would have a profound effect on every area of his life.

“He’s been here for 11 years, and my life has been one hell of a roller coaster this whole time,” he continued. “Freshie was with me through it all every day. He loved me. He really did.

“He came up and licked me if I was crying, he loved to lay in bed w/ me, he was always by my side or close by. He was my guardian angel. Nights I’d want to cut myself, I’d see Freshie and I couldn’t do it.”

Kid Cudi admitted he’s “a complete mess” and still feels the lingering responsibilities of owning a pet: “I think of him when I wake up. Thinkin I have to take him out to pee. When I go to bed, I almost say ‘c’mon boy’ to let him know he can get in bed with me.
