DMX’s ‘Exodus’ Album Isn’t The Billboard Home Run It Was Expected To Be

When an artist dies, typically their catalog sees a massive spike in streaming and music sales. When it was reported MF DOOM passed away in January, his music saw a 870 percent increase in streams, while Juice WRLD’s music was streamed over 40 million times on the day of his death in December 2019.

Although DMX’s music sales and album streams exploded by over 1000 percent following his April 9 passing, it doesn’t appear his new posthumous album Exodus is going to experience that same kind of play.

According to early predictions from Hits Daily Double, Exodus is expected to move between 28,000 to 32,000 total album-equivalent units, with 12,000 to 14,000 of those coming from pure album sales. That still means he could end up in the Billboard 200 Top 10, but it won’t be the No. 1 album some people thought it would be.

Exodus arrived on Friday (May 28) with features from JAY-Z, Nas, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg and The LOX, among others. Even though DMX originally stated Pop Smoke would make a posthumous appearance on the 13-track project, he wound up not making the cut.

Speaking to The Breakfast Club last week, Swizz explained, “They used the verse already. I know X wouldn’t want an old verse. We fought for it.” He also said the verse was “pulled out of nowhere” then added, “It was two verses and both of them was used. We went to get another verse and it was used.”

Exodus marked DMX’s eighth studio album and first effort since 2012’s Undisputed.

    1. It was a compilation album tho honestly, much respect to the late DMX but it’s just not even a fraction of what he was back in his prime. That’s why it’s not going to sell, it has less X and more features than any other of his albums.

    2. All I know is Exodus is a good offering from DMX. Nothing like his prime work but his lyrics still hit hard. Especially on his more emotional songs.

    3. They shouldn’t have released this. We all know he can’t rap as well as he once did. They should’ve got 10 album cuts from 99-2004 and released the battle between him and HOV. THAT would’ve been a gold mine. However, I still bought this album just out of love and support as we all should. Dog for life

      1. I love X I meant to comment about that bow wow vs Soulja boy straight poop fest salute to X

    4. Don’t worry maybe Jay-Z will buy like 10,000 records because he loved DMX so fuckin much, right.

    5. Its not an X album. Its a Various artist compilation album featuring X. And his skill have diminished greatly. Time has passed his style of delivery by. Its sad.. RIP X.

    6. a stop being greedy dog!!

he need music like Here We go Again(jayz diss)

” nlggas can’t fck with kiss I meanie that, had to stop eating too much red meat because I ate too many beanie macs!”

      let’s gooo!

    7. As a Day One Fan of X and after given this Album a Spin, i understand.

BUT IT’ S ALSO RYDE OR DIE…so go get this Album and support the culture…RIP King X

    8. This is Not really an X album and also we have to understand musically DMX was long gone with all the trouble with drugs he had. He stopped making music and fans totally forgot him musically. We all just cared about his overall health over the years as just wish he got better. Sorry and I hope this album earnings is enough for his kids. His money woes was another big problem! Drugs, baby mammas, bankruptcies and poor guidance from producers were all lacking in his career. DMX made some real bad choices folks and his demise really played a role in his current sales. We love him but also was very sad for him. Again this is not really an X album! X stands alone but was gone too long. Luckily friends stepped up to help to complete with him. Respect to his industry friends. R.I.P X

    9. Because that shit was terrible. They ought to be ashamed they did a money grab on him and knew that album wasn’t ready.

    10. Overall not a bad album but it’s definitely more of a compilation album, and honestly that actually works better considering his skills have diminished and sounds repetitive

    11. Cuz the album sucks it’s only got 3 dope songs to me it sounds rushed and dmx has no bars.no disrespect just honest opinion

    12. I agree with most of the comments on here that this does not feel like a DMX album. With him passing away and pretty much the album having only 10 real songs because of the skits and interludes it feels very short period. There is not many gems on here at all and everyone wants to blame Swizzy to a certain point because most of the songs have his foot print on it…I agree…More Ruff Ryder artists should’ve been on here and more dame grease and PK as producers

I will appreciate this offering and hopefully it’s not his last because it will be very disappointing to end off his rap career like this.

    13. I hope to see bad ratings everywhere.. its a shit album no reason to praise it just because he died

    14. Waaaay too many collaborations for starters. It wasn’t marketed good either. It doesn’t feel very X’ish or Ruff Ryder’ish either. X’s rhymes always kill, but the beat selections are questionable.

    15. Unfortunately, a big letdown. Not the last hoo-rah we were expecting from X. “Bath Salts” is the best song on there.

    16. “One thing bout music when it hit you feel no pain
White folks say it controls your brain
I know better than that, that’s game” – Dead Prez

I didn’t get a bigger than hip hop vibe

    17. You can delete comments all you want, I said what I said. Its hot doo doo!!! Big brown turd!

    18. It’s not a surprise,as Great of a Career he had in Hip Hop his prime ended more than 10 years ago…..Its harsh but it’s like a once Great Rapper making an all of a sudden comeback. LL Cool J could try to put out an album but results would be the same. His Best Years Passed but R.I.P. DMX

    19. I’m not surprised at all after listening once. I have physical copies of his first 6 albums and pick of the litter, even a few ruff ryder compilations just to hear 1 X song or verse. If he was on it at all I bought it. Mass audiences got tired by his 5th album, still went platinum but signs were there that his home run streak was over. Year of the dog..again confirmed it. His worst album by far, his camp drank from the same well for too long, stuck to the same formula that worked so well the first 5 years of his career. So for the last 15 years watching his life deteriorate through prison and rehab stints, I was no longer interested in hearing new material. I grew up with his shit on repeat, 20 years later I don’t need to hear that vibe anymore. I held hope that maybe his talk of a gospel album might come to fruition. When he passed I listened to his 2nd album all the way through, and my fav song remains Ready to Meet Him, after the prayer that closes the album. Brought me to tears. Rest in Peace.

      1. Ready to meet him is favorite as well. It’s too bad the sound from his first 2 albums didn’t carry over but in reality we wish all our favorite artist can be in their prime forever. It’s just not realistic. Long Live X though. He is a and always will be a legend nonetheless.

    20. Only the first song sounded like a RR -cut. The rest sounded like leftovers……too bad, was really hoping to like this album. Really wanted this to be X’s return to form…..and redemption.

    21. DMX has 2 good albums. It’s dark and hell is hot and flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood. The rest is 80% straight up commercial trash. That whole ruff ryder party crap really dragged him down as an MC. This last album just sounds like an effort to regurgitate that 90’s sound but it’s a real miss all over the line. That nas track is just to yawn at…. Snoop is so washed out as a rapper it aint even funny no more. Religion and crack really messed with Dmx’s talent.

      1. I would say “..And Then There Was X” was stil a part time banger, sure half of it was r&b trash but still a dope album. “The Great Depression” had couple of good tracks on it as well without Swizz Beats.

        1. The Great Depression is … a great album. Other then the debut which of course is everybodys favourite, I think I like TGD the most. It may be sentimental thing cause I spent months with this album back in the days.

    22. Rolling Stone only gave it 3 OUT OF 5 as well.. and even that is generous, just because he died doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be honest about the album being a real stinker. Stinkin’ up Earl Simmons legacy that was already over like two decades ago.

      1. Surprised Rolling Stone rated it that high honestly for awhile the only rapper they gave good reviews was Kanye

    23. I think That it didn’t sell well strictly because a couple of points:
      1. People probably thought it was a bunch old songs put together with it being a “money grab” like 2 pac albums. No one thought that this was an album he actually recorded when he was ALIVE.
      2. The promo wasn’t good enough. It felt like an independent release rather than a major label release. With him being on def jam, we would expect better promo.

All together the album was a decent offering for “him”. I listened To the album with low expectations because realistically, X fell off musically kinda during “Grand Champ” but it showed extremely on “Year of the dog again”. The drugs had a major impact on his lyrics and sound for music. But i think With this particular album it was better than i expected. Knowing that i wasnt Going to hear the same X from the 90’s and 00’s, i was satisfied of what he could give us.

    24. That first single wasn’t it. I know muthafuckas love that butcher wave, but why is X last joint sounding like he was featuring on they shit?

    25. A decent album at best. Musically it was eclectic, but those track didn’t compliment X’s style, however he deviated from the album formula that made his 1st two albums hits, I was waiting on the death of Damien and a new dope God song, neither was on there. Where’s the song dedicated to his fiancee, to his kids instead he gives listeners a smooth but raunchy song about having sex ??‍♂️??‍♂️, the unfortunate reality is that his lyrics didn’t reflect his internal growth or progression that Swizz Beats speaks of in these interviews. The album sounds rushed to attempt to catch the energy from verzuz which was a big mistake. People love X regardless.
Drag- On’s not on the album, Eve’s not on the Album, Bath Salt is dated, you can hear it.
The physical and voice conditioning should have came before the album. X should’ve went went the Busta Rhymes route before dropping the album. X also should’ve got beats from everybody not just Swizz. It definitely sounds like X was a feature on a Griselda track, instead of the other way around, maybe X should’ve done two verses. I was waiting for a super Dope

    26. This by far is not a DMX album
DMX sound is the LOX, RR, Drag if it is not broke do not fix it. There we’re too many unnecessary features. Should not have to say when is DMX bars coming. The mark was missed. In all his interviews he clearly stated he did not like anyone and everyone is on his album.

    27. It’s messed up why is Bono on a DMX album???the other features make sense so the album could move more units but Bono with X is like when Eminem did a song with Beyonce, just doesn’t align
