It’s hard to imagine anyone not appreciating the collective genius of Outkast. After all, Big Boi and André 3000 redefined what Southern Hip Hop could sound like with their 1994 debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and subsequent albums such as 1996 ATLiens and 1998’s Aquemini.
While all three of those projects saw success on the Billboard charts, the duo’s fourth studio album, 2000’s Stankonia, reached a whole other level when the single “Ms. Jackson” landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, opening them up to a wider audience.
With the momentum propelling them to even greater heights, Outkast’s 2003 double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below became their first album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was ultimately certified 11x-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) thanks to singles such as “Roses,” “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move.”
In the course of a decade, Big Boi and André 3000 undeniably proved they were a winning formula. Although they haven’t released an album as a duo in 15 years, Outkast still manages to regularly trend on Twitter.
On Tuesday (May 4), Outkast was again a topic of conversation after someone posed the question, “Has anyone ever washed Andre 3000 on a song? Because … I haven’t heard such a song.”
Twitter soon exploded with at least one obvious answer to the proposed question — Big Boi. Tweet after tweet celebrated Daddy Fat Sax’s innate rapping abilities, while simultaneously defending him.
In a 2017 interview with GQ Style, even André 3000 admitted, “Big Boi can rap better than me — I always said that. If somebody said, ‘Pick who you want from Outkast to go to battle with you,’ it wouldn’t be me. ‘Cause like, what I’ma do? Say some mind shit? You can’t have thoughts in a battle — nobody gives a shit about that.”
Even so, the Big Boi slander was flowing. Check out some of the reactions below.
The song Everlasting is all ima say
The Sheek Louch of Outkast
Facts…and Sheek is better than Styles P!
I said what I said!!!
Slow down, Sheen is not better than Ghost. That’ll be enough edge talk for the day.
Lox is a trio, Outkast is a duo. Try that again.
Stans are dumb
There’s no Andre of the Outkast without Big Boi period.
Growing up in the south “outkast” is the name that comes out first. I love both and the great thing about these two, they don’t down talk one another they always praise each other. That’s greatness on its own. Put on any Outkast and I guarantee it still ride till this day I still listen to spoodie every other day.
People acting like big boi can’t rap and he was Andres sidekick or something, there is no OutKast with out one or the other, true rap fans know what’s going on. 2 of the greatest to ever do it.
What does “washed” mean? This entire article is based on a term I haven’t heard of lol
It’s kinda like saying “outshined” or “outperformed”. Basically saying one raps a better verse than the other.
I was wondering what wash meant to
As a southern guy living in a small Alabama town 100 miles southwest of Atlanta growing up listening to his favorite group I’m shocked that this even a topic!!! In a town where u have nothing to entertain u but music I will put this man against any mc and he will hold his own!!!! The two as a group compliment each other so well but yet they are so different!! And I’m a student of all hip hop not just southern!! Tell em to step up And DADDY FAT SACKS aka Sir Lucious Leftfoot will make them understand!!
Homie, you sound more educated than some of these cat’s who claim to be living on the same street as Nas
Itz sad dat ppl r actually tryna pt dem against each otha. 1 of if nt da best rap groups eva!!!!
The people discrediting Big Boi aren’t Outkast fans – They’re kids who heard about 3 stacks then jumped on the hype train that’s why they keep saying stupid shit. If you were there when the albums dropped then you know the real. Same as these new Wu-Tang fans.
