Former Bad Boy Singer Speaks Of ‘Snakes’ As He Warns New Artists To Read Contracts

Boyband B5 had fairly decent success with Diddy‘s Bad Boy Records in the mid-00s, releasing two albums through the label and working with top producers such as Rodney Jerkins, Ryan Leslie, Sean Garrett and more before parting ways. However, they apparently never received a dime from any of it.

In a recent Instagram post commemorating the release of their self-titled debut album on Bad Boy, group member Bryan Breeding went into detail about the “snakes” who kept them from receiving money for their albums.

“We made about 99.9% of all our income from live performances & merchandise and till this day I’ve never seen a PENNY from any of our B5 commercial albums,” he wrote. “For years! We reach out to lawyers, advisors and even TV networks for a chance to help us or tell our story and no one ever touched it with a 10 foot pole.”

He went on to implore other artists to use his story as a cautionary tale, encouraging the same message artists such as Russ have been preaching — own your own music.

“So here I AM telling my story, my truth and not from a ‘woe is me’ perspective but as an example for the next generation of young artists to WRITE and OWN your content!” he added. “READ your contracts and create new sounds for the LOVE of music, as a expression of who YOU ARE! You don’t need to compromise for the bag or the glamorized ‘Record Label Deal’ we have enough artist like that and doing a great job at it.”

In response, the group’s lead singer Patrick Breeding also revealed Disney never paid fellow group member Kelly Breeding for his contribution to High School Musical.

“Oh we’re going there today?” he commented. “In that case Disney needs to run @gowiththeflow88 his check for writing the rap on #HighSchoolMusical #GetYourHeadInTheGame. He was 14 and they stole that check from him. And that’s just the tip.”

Diddy Endorses Former Bad Boy Star Shyne's Political Aspirations

This isn’t the first time artists have called out Bad Boy for their allegedly shady practices. In January, Ma$e put Diddy on blast for holding on to his publishing as well.

    1. Diddy played his artists – even the Notorious BIG. How come he still acts like he is here for the culture?

      1. Diddy has and always will be a no good dirty lying homosexual snake that will slave you out of your royalties and masters and leave you out to dry…his ego and pockets are the only thing that matter to him.

      2. Well…Biggie would still be alive if he wasnt on Bad Boy and 2pac wasnt on Death Row.. i wonder what MGK’s contract looks like.

    2. Imagine rap without this guy, the legends that would still be alive and the music he kept from us smh

      1. Told y’all, I blame Andre Harrell for Diddy… Because of him we got stuck with this jackass. You can’t run a label like Barry Gordy did Motown because he constantly mistreating talent and had to live looking over his shoulder…Diddy is lucky to still be alive after all the people that he’s crossed. But then again the whole industry is full of snakes so he fits right in with the corporate dickheads

    3. Years ago someone used to always post a list of all the black lives Sean Diddy Combs has ruined over the last 4 decades on here. It was long. Havent seen it in a minute. This website moderates heavy now so it would never fly

    4. of course they didnt make money from album sales. A) theres 5 of them; 2) they didnt sell shit, I highly doubt they even came close to gold even back then when albums were still selling decent amounts of copies; and D) not at all familiar with them so I may be wrong, but I suspect they did not write nor produce any of their own stuff, leaving any small amount of profits from the album going double aluminum to writers and producers before the artists see anything

    5. This young man’s absolutely right with his advice. The entertainment industry is a game of Snakes and Ladders. You role the dice when you choose to get in and pray to God that you find the safe paths around. Unfortunately for him and his friends, they just happened to sign to one of the biggest serpents around. He swallowed them whole as they were in the zenith of their success and spat them out back at square one.

    6. So Diddy and his label will make an artist bigger than life, book a soldier out your around the states, they make 50K a show plus merch, and still got shit to complain about? Smh. Rappers like Hop that went independent making money off their songs ended up not making shit anyways. You need the big man backing you. Didn’t your momma teach you to be grateful?

      1. You need to understand figures and contracts. You do not need large company backing. They basically own everything you do and all your masters. A succesfull independent artist makes more money than a mainstream cat. Either way the best way to make money is by touring a shows is where the big money is. At least independent artist keep everything in pocket. Corporations don’t just put their money in an artists and gamble. Eventually they want to get something out of it. That’s why most artists have crooked contracts. No investor is going to spend millions on artists so they flop. That’s why they own everything from an artist and use it as their leverage. While an independent artist might not sell as much. Let’s says 12 buck per album and even if he can hit around 10k that’s still 100k he doesn’t have to share or pay back a label. So conclusion. You don’t need the big man’s backing because you’re most likely not to make much out of it since the big man is the one who gets paid first.

    7. I played keys on a lot of bad boy related projects. Added bass lines/ synths/ etc to thicken up some beats. For 4 years straight i was told my time is coming and to keep doing what im doing and puff is really recognizing my talents. I got some stylish free clothes and nights out but no moneys at all. Everyones story about these people are true.

      1. Well Mario, usually people who refer to money as monies are pretty easy to swindle. Maybe take 4th grade English again?

    8. Wow. Such intelligent advice. READ A CONTRACT BEFORE SIGNING? How about have a LAWYER read a contract For you before signing? Idiot. It’s not a “terms of agreement” update for YouTube. This is your career and life.

    9. Remember Danity Kane, girl group probably from the same time period. Had the same story, nothing new here with Bad Boy, it’s business as usual. What Danity shed light on was Diddy would show up at video shoots, he’s not featured on the song but he decides he wants a cameo in the video. He invoices the group like 25k for an appearance fee. He gets his bag before the group. Keep puttin in work Diddy.

      1. “If anybody out there wanna be an artist and not have to worry about a record executive trying to be…all up on the videos, all on a record, dancing…come to DEATH ROW!” – Suge

    10. “u got me” by b5 was my guilty pleasure back in the day. It’s definitely a song for chicks but whatever.
