Hollywood, CA

The Game recently stopped by the HipHopDX offices in Hollywood for a nearly hour-long conversation about his 15-year career in Hip Hop. The Compton-bred rapper talked about waking up from a coma, listening to classic Hip Hop albums to help find his own style and why his debut album was changed from N.W.A. Volume 1 to The Documentary.

“I said I wanted to film a documentary for the album… and Jimmy Iovine and Dre, they weren’t really in tune with shooting a documentary,” he said. “Nobody was doing that shit. But I kept asking about ‘the documentary.’ And I asked about that shit so many times, they just thought I was talking about the album.”

Eventually the album name transformed into the title that we received.

“So they just started calling it The Documentary,” he said. “When are you going to finish The Documentary? Fuck it, I guess everybody wants it to be called The Documentary.”

Although he seemed happy with the title change, he added, “If it was called N.W.A Volume 1, I think it would have even been more classic than The Documentary.”

Game also talked about how he almost signed with Diddy prior to officially inking a deal with Dr. Dre.

“It was Diddy’s idea that I go make sure that Dre hear it (his mixtape)” he said.

Over the course of the interview, Game also told stories about his career that involves everyone from Xzibit to Michael Jackson.
