Drake’s sports curse claimed another victim when previously undefeated boxer Anthony Joshua suffered the first loss of his professional career on Saturday night (June 1).
Andy Ruiz Jr. beat the now former heavyweight champion in a stunning upset to secure the WBA Super, IBF, WBO and IBO World Heavyweight Titles. Ruiz won via technical knockout in the 7th round of the bout, which took place at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Joshua’s shocking defeat occurred a few months after he took a photo with Drake and declared he’d break the OVO superstar’s sports curse.
“Bout to break the curse #June1st,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Drake curse has seemingly become a new version of EA Sports’ Madden curse, which often saw players featured on the cover suffering some type of misfortune. Now, teams and athletes are dealing with high-profile defeats after receiving support from Drizzy.
Earlier this year, multiple European soccer clubs lost matches on the heels of their star players taking photos with Drake. Also, the Alabama Crimson Tide were defeated by the Clemson Tigers in the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship after Drizzy wore an Alabama hoodie prior to the game.
