Ice Cube was a recent guest on ESPN’s The Jump where he provided a few details on the upcoming Friday film, the fourth in the franchise. During the conversation, he confirmed the script was complete and the powers that be are shooting for a 2020 release.

“Yeah, we pushing for it,” he said. “We finished the script, we are getting notes from the studio and it’s going back and forth. Get into pre-production and start hiring. It would be nice for this to come out on the 25th anniversary. That would be kinda … good.”

Cube teased the film on Twitter last month using one of the film’s signature catchphrases.

“To the 24 years that have flown since this came out, all I gotta say is… BYE, FELICIA. Do you want the next chapter??”

Although Cube initially shot down rumors there was another Friday film in the works, co-star John Witherspoon casually mentioned they’d received the “green light” for the movie during a 2017 interview with The Power 95.3 GetUpCrew Orlando.

Last June, Cube said the script was in the works but didn’t provide any further information. However, it’s clear Chris Tucker’s involvement is still up in the air. Tucker, of course, played his partner-in-crime Smokey.

Tucker addressed the topic in another interview with ESPN’s The Plug.

“I don’t know. I talked to Cube about it,” he said. “He told me he was working on some stuff. And if it comes together right, I’m definitely gonna look at it and see if it works. ‘Cause I never say never … I definitely want to check it out. If it works, it’s a possibility.”
