Kevin Hart Steps Down As 2019 Academy Awards Host After Homophobic Comments Resurface

Kevin Hart will no longer be hosting the 91st Academy Awards. His decision comes shortly after the 39-year-old refused to apologize for homophobic tweets and comments he made in the past. Hart announced the news via Twitter on Thursday night (December 6), offering an “I’m sorry” to anyone from the LGBTQ community he’s offended.

“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s….this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists,” he tweeted. “I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”

Hart continued, “I’m sorry that I hurt people.. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.”

When the comedic actor was announced as the next Oscars host earlier this week, his old comments quickly came back to haunt him. One comment in particular came from Hart’s comedy 2010 special, Seriously Funny.

“One of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay. That’s a fear,” he said. “Keep in mind, I’m not homophobic. Be happy. Do what you want to do. But me, as a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”

Hart addressed the controversy in an Instagram video but didn’t issue an apology at that time.

“If u want to search my history or past and anger yourselves with what u find that is fine with me,” he said in the clip. “I’m almost 40 years old and I’m in love with the man that I am becoming. You LIVE and YOU LEARN & YOU GROW & YOU MATURE.”

The 91st Academy Awards is scheduled for February 24 2019. An alternate host hasn’t been announced as of publication time.

    1. Society is fucking ridiculous these days, that was a stand up fucking comedy, i think it seriously funny ya’ll always acting seriously tryna bring people down, GET A LIFE SOCIETY, CHRIST! Punks

    2. He said that during one of his shows right? Its a show, for crying out loud.. Should we also ban actors who said homophobic shit in movies? Geez

    3. People are overly sensitive, it was a joke, there are far worse jokes than a father being homophobic, he even said he is not but its a joke. If you ban every comedian that tells jokes that are not politically correct their would be no comedy, part of comedy is making people uncomfortable and talking about issues.

    4. Kevin Hart sounds like a b1tch for apologizing on Twitter. You’ll never hear Dave Chappelle apologize for offending people or his jokes.

K Hart needs to grow some balls.

    5. Homophobia is some made up shit. Ain’t nobody scared of gays. If you ain’t fucking with that shit then oh well move on. The shit was a joke any way. But that’s Hollyweird for you.

    6. He don’t have to appologize. That’s his choice as a father. He doesn’t want his son turning up gay. He has every right to express that. Just like homosexuals have their rights to express their gayness through all platforms.

      1. Lol what? Straight white men are the most hated demographic by SJW PC weirdos in 2018. It’s the hollyweird females and non white males who are backing that bullshit

    7. Our kids WILL be speaking Chinese and/or Russian due to this type of fuckery. Our nation is ruined. We have been divided. You can’t be black, gay, Latino, white. That’s all not allowed. Our individuality has been stripped from us, what made this country great. As a nation we are voluntarily going along with this bullshit…

    8. rap did this to itself with the “we can only vote hillary” sheep mindset – well rap fans i hope you’re happy

      1. How in the fuck is rap music, which wouldn’t support this kind of bitchassness, responsible? Have several seats…

    9. Lost a lot of respect for Kevin over this… Not the gay jokes. But him giving in to the PC bullshit in America these days.

Comedians are commonly offensive. Grow a pair, and stop being overly sensitive children. Seriously. If your American, and support PC culture, your destroying our nation…. One day, nothing will be okay anymore, because PC culture goes after everything and everyone.

    10. This is the kind of world we want tho right? thin skin, “inclusive”, and willing to destroy anybody who steps out of line…sounds very progressive to me. We let the media and hollywood influence us to be their pawns. Disrespect the prez…check, disrespect the flag…check, make a joke about gays nearly a decade ago that you’ve already answered for….off with his head.

    11. outrage culture in social media strikes again! once again, people (mainly sjws) are digging up old shit said from the past and then using that against motherfuckers as if its relevant now. kevin isn’t homophobic and doesn’t have to apologize for shit, but i guess saying anything that the lgbt don’t like will fuck up the cashflow so he gotta do it. damn shame smh

    12. Why would anyone encourage or want their son to be gay? The only way a father would want that for his son is if he was gay himself and happy with his decision. No straight man will ever encourage his own son – or any other man – to be gay. He shouldn’t have apologised.

    13. He shouldn’t have apologized. Fuck this sensitive ass world we live in. People just looking for a reason bitch and complain. It was part of his ACT, imagine if Anthony Jeselnik was the host of the Oscars, people would be having a heart attack hearing his jokes! Lmao
