While he might not be well known in the United States, MC ProKid was revered in the South African community. In the wee hours of Thursday (August 9), members of ProKid’s family confirmed that the 37-year-old had died from a massive seizure.
According to Times Live, the family’s statement read, “The legendary SA Hip Hop artist affectionately known as ProKid of Hip Hop passed away on Wednesday [August 8]. He suffered a severe seizure attack whilst visiting friends and paramedics were called in to assist. They did their best to revive him to no avail and called his time of death at 20:38.”
One of ProKid’s last performances was at the Basha Uhuru Music Festival in Johannesburg earlier this summer. As the news of his death started to circulate, the festival’s Twitter account sent out a message remembering the performance.
“Rest In Peace #ProKid, what a great performance you delivered at Basha Uhuru,” the post reads. “How you waved at the crowd when you finished performing… went backstage and returned to wave back some more… saying your goodbyes to your fans. You were a true genuine gift to the hip hop world!”
