Ro James is back with Smoke, the first of a two-part EP with the second installment, Mirrors, set to arrive later this year.

Smoke serves as a follow up to the R&B singer-songwriter’s major label debut Eldorado, which was helmed by the Grammy-nominated single, “Permission.”

James says his latest offering also serves as an appetizer to his upcoming sophomore album.

The four-track project is spearheaded by the previously released “Lost My Mind,” which features a sample of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa.” The single is produced by longtime Nas collaborator Salaam Remi.

James spoke on how he differs from the new wave of R&B — including Tory Lanez, 6LACK, and Bryson Tiller — during an interview with HipHopDX at last year’s SXSW.

“I fit in my own lane,” he said. “I feel like everybody, all of those people you just named come to the game with their own thing, their own perspective, their own point of view, their own sound. I feel like I come with the same thing: my own sound, my own perspective, my own point of view, all the places I’ve been, all the things I’ve ever listened to.”
