Kevin Gates is slated to release his debut album, Islah, December 11. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana rapper says that the title is the name of his eldest daughter and the project represents the lessons he has learned from having her.
“To inform, to improve, to make better, and I believe that’s what my first daughter did to me,” he says to HotNewHipHop, “so I named my first album after my first daughter.”
Gates says that he does not only have biological children, but has taken his friends’ children under his wing when they have gone to prison. He says that being a father has given him perspective on how to spend his finances.
“If I ever wanna go buy a chain, I gotta be really, really rich to go buy a chain,” he says, “because I have too many responsibilities to blow money on jewelry or a car or anything like that.”

With Islah due out in just over a month, Gates says that he doesn’t have a need to convince people to buy the album.
“I’m supposed to be promoting the album,” he says, “but I feel like you could get it if you want to. If you don’t want it, don’t get it. I don’t care. I don’t care if you go get it or not. I’m gonna continue to make great music. I understand my fanbase is growing and now people wanna know who Kevin Gates is as an individual. I feel the best way to get to know me is go listen to my music. I put my life in my music.”
