The case against Jay Z and Timbaland regarding the usage of a sample in the Brooklyn, New York rapper’s single “Big Pimpin’” was dismissed last week, which inspired HipHopWired to compile “Case Dismissed: A Timeline Of 12 Jay Z Lawsuits.”
Jay Z’s stabbing of fellow record executive Lance “Un” Rivera in 1999 is one of the cases covered in HipHopWired’s list.
“Jay Z admitted to stabbing Lance ‘Un’ Rivera in December of 1999 at a release party for Q-Tip’s Amplified album,” HipHopWired writes. “Rivera also filed a civil suit against Jay Z, but it was settled out of court. The knife poke earned Jay three years probation and a third-degree assault charge.”
Another case on the list is the 2015 case regarding Jay Z’s song “Versus.”

“Seventy-nine-year-old Swiss Jazz musician Bruno Spoerri walked away with a cool 50% of Jay Z’s publishing for ‘Versus,’” the story says, “after the Swizz Beatz and Timbaland produced track failed to clear a sample of Spoerri’s 1978 song ‘On The Way.’”
