Puff Daddy talked about removing negativity from his life on Pharrell’s OTHERtone Beats 1 radio show.

“I made a decision on what I want to put out there,” Puff Daddy says. “I don’t wanna give you nothing but love. I don’t wanna give you nothing but positive vibrations. Yes, Puff Daddy has become a hippy.”

Diddy also describes meeting Pharrell, who was wearing a white plastic suit with goggles and matching shoes.

“He came in with a whole different type of swag than he came the first time,” the Bad Boy Records founder says, “it was just like loud and proud and beautiful and different and like nerdy but like unapologetic.”

Diddy was able to encourage Pharrell and Chad Hugo to pursue their personal music careers beyond producing for other artists.

“Pharrell would come by the studio and then one second, I just looked at him I was like, ‘You’re a rockstar on your own,'” Diddy says. “I had just did it, so I came from being a producer and I was just like this guy, he’s a superstar.”

“It blew my mind,” Pharrell says. “He was like, ‘Yo, you belong in front of the keyboard as well as behind it.’ I was like, ‘Wow, ok, this dude is saying this to me.’ For so long, everyone just was looking at us like we were crazy and out of our minds. At a certain point, Chad and I just continued producing and I just had given up on that. So it was Puff that was like, ‘Yo, you can do more than what you’re doing. So that’s when we went and got signed by Virgin Records and that’s how N.E.R.D. was born. No one ever really dies is because Puff saw it.”
