The nominees for the MTV Video Music Awards were announced yesterday (July 21).
Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” was nominated for “Best Female Video” and “Best Hip Hop Video,” but was left off the ballot for “Video of the Year” despite receiving 19.6 million views in 24 hours. The video currently has almost half a billion views on YouTube and has been the subject of multiple pop culture conversations, including a reenactment from Ellen Degeneres.
The rapper took to Twitter to express her concern with the snub.
“When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination,’ Minaj writes.

“If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well,” she says in another post.
Taylor Swift responded defensively to the comments. Her video for “Bad Blood,” which features Kendrick Lamar, is nominated for “Video of the Year.”
“I’ve done nothing but love & support you,” the singer says. “It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.”
“If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on,” she continues.

Minaj then responds saying that she didn’t intend to start a conversation with Swift.
“Huh? U must not be reading my tweets,” she writes. “Didn’t say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this.”
OnAirwithRyanSeacrest wrote about the feud with the headline “Taylor Swift Blasts Nicki Minaj for VMA’s Jab.”
“Nothing I said had to do with Taylor,” Minaj says, quoting the post. “So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That’s what they want.”

“Ryan posted a headline of Taylor saying she loves & supports me,” she continues. “But not me saying the same to her. Lol. Their headline says I took a ‘jab’?”
Minaj uses the example of streaming services to explain the disparity of treatment between herself and Swift.
“I’m so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works,” she says. “Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged.”
