Earlier this week, Beyoncé shared an image via Beyoncé.com of TIDAL’s staff at its headquarters in Oslo, Norway.
Bey stands in front of her grinning husband, Jay Z, as they’re surrounded by what appears to be a predominately white staff.
TMZ pointed out the lack of diversity within the photo, and noted that the image arrives just a few weeks after Jay Z expressed his disappointment – through freestyle – with the black community for not supporting his music streaming service.
“Tidal, my own label, same difference/ Oh niggas is skeptical of their own shit/You bought 9 iPhones and Steve Jobs is rich/Phil Knight worth trillions you still bought those kicks/Spotify is 9 billion they ain’t say shit/Lucy you got some splaining to do/The only one they hating on look the same as you,” Jay rapped at both of TIDAL B-Sides concerts earlier this month.

So if the entire staff was Black would that mean it’s diverse? No. It would mean the entire staff is of one race and, therefore, not diverse. You all know damn well that if the entire staff was black, this would not be news. Not to mention, about 85% of the artists involved with Tidal are, yes, black. Imagine if it were 85% WHITE?! Hmmm….
Well, the writer was right to call out Jay-Z, though it could have been written differently (as a nuanced Op-Ed because this really is not news). Jay expects black folk to follow him cause he’s black – period – and has been publicly conflating criticism of the service with criticism of him. Whether that in and of itself is marketing or him actually being in his feelings I can’t tell (and really don’t care). But to expect that race loyalty will ensure no criticism from blacks of a piece of a mediocre (at best) white-owned service you bought and are shilling for, is rather absurd, which the photo, pared with the freestyle quote, do in fact demonstrate.
Honestly, IDGAF. I use YouTube and am tired of both Tidal and Jay-Z at this point. He should have faded to black in ’03 as far as I am concerned.

Jay-Z can defend his business decisions, sure. Not saying he can’t. What is bizarre is the manner in which he is going about it. For someone who has been a staunch defender of his own press – the purveyor of the laid back and cool – he is coming across as whiny and demanding. This is someone who has set trends by nonchalantly describing things (liquor, throwbacks, private flights) as superior, which itself was intoxicating in his prime. This – the epic-ish press conference with Kanyish-overtones, the claim that this is revolutionary, the comparisons to truly game-changing innovations like the iPod (which blew wide open an entirely new market category, which Apple than dominated; by contrast, exclusive content is just a unique feature, not a new category, added to an already maturing market)…the backlash is somewhat of his own making. And he is making it worse. Let the service speak for itself. He’s never had to demand loyalty before, and it looks ugly on him. The photo merely accentuates that ugliness.
I don’t hate Jay-Z. I respect him as a legend. I am just tired of his brand – his constant recapitulation of a tale he told best in 1996, his continued efforts to prove his relevance, his refusal to fade gracefully into business.
