Late last week, Dej Loaf dropped off the official remix to her “Me U & Hennessy” record with Lil Wayne.

The Detroit native recently caught up with XXL to discuss her Lil Wayne feature and to recall the first time that she heard Weezy’s contributions to the record.

“It’s really like a personal song,” Dej Loaf says. “Some songs don’t need to be touched sometimes, and if it was going to be touched, I wanted it to be great. So he did a great job.

“I was going crazy,” Dej recalls when she first heard Wayne’s verse. “I was like, ‘Wow, he really did it. This crazy.’ I knew he was going to do it just the way he did it.”

Later in the conversation, Dej Loaf addressed some of the backlash she’s recently faced over the release of her “Me U & Hennessy” music video. The visuals illustrate a somewhat more seductive side to the Detroit artist, something fans aren’t used to seeing, but Dej warns there’s more of it to come.

“I got introduced in the game in a bucket hat, in all white, you know, the tomboy look,” she says. “So it was definitely a different side of me that I wanted to show in the work because I didn’t want them to just box me in just as one type of girl.

“I only did it because I wanted to do it,” Dej Loaf adds. “I felt comfortable. And everything I do, I do it because I want to do it. You know, people are being like, ‘Oh, they got her doing this now, the industry changed her,’ and it’s like, ‘No.’ [Laughs] They just think it’s just all this crazy Illuminati-type shit. Like, I did it because I wanted to do it. I just wanted to switch it up. And you’re going to see more of it, too. It’s not the first and it’s not the last time.”
