Tyler, the Creator recently stopped by The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS to discuss a variety of topics, including his latest album Cherry Bomb, collaborating with Roy Ayers, and more.

Before Smiley can ask Tyler a question, the Odd Future frontman recalls the first time he saw Smily on television. It was the early 2000’s and Smiley was hosting a panel on music producing with R. Kelly and Pharrell. At the time, Pharrell‘s band N.E.R.D. had just released its debut album, In Search Of.

“That was the first time I saw the cover, I was like ahh, that looks cool,” Tyler recalls. Then, I went and got that album, and it shaped everything, so thank you for that.”

Smiley was surprised to find out that Tyler is a Roy Ayers fan. Ayers is actually featured on Tyler’s album.

“To hear someone who’s been doing this forever to acknowledge someone like me, is awesome,” he says.

When Smiley asks Tyler how does he depict himself and how does he want others to see him, the 24-year-old Ladera Heights, California-native responds in a very introspective manner: “I’m very bright, I’m smart, I’m annoying and obnoxious. I’m very creative and borderline genius, and I think other people are starting to see that too.

“I’m curious enough to explore whether it’s music or clothes, I’m not afraid to ask questions either,” he adds.
