Jarren Benton Blasts “Noisey Atlanta” Documentary

Four episodes into Noisey’s 10-part documentary series on the Atlanta Hip Hop scene, Jarren Benton recently spoke out against the coverage as unfairly one-sided and for promoting a singular image of the city’s Black community.

“I saw that, it was cool,” Benton, an Atlanta emcee himself, said in a clip that debuted as a part of today’s DX Daily. “It was cool. I appreciate it. But not every nigga in Atlanta is selling—like the fact that you come to Atlanta like, ‘Show us cooking crack.’ What the fuck? What the fuck?! What the fuck? Let me say this, it’s not a fucking game. The niggas that do cook crack, they’re in a certain circumstance that that’s what they have to do to survive. It’s not a fucking game. Don’t come to the city making this shit like it’s a fucking game. That’s my problem.”

Benton added that the docu-series should balance its coverage of explicit drug use and manufacturing with another perspective.

“Noisey actually pissed me off with that shit. It would have been cool if they would have did that and then if they would have shown another side of Atlanta. The fact that that’s what they wanted to focus on, the ratchet shit. It’s cool. But show the other side. Show the other nigga. Show the nigga that’s a fucking scientist. Shows niggas something other than we just cook crack and turn up and carry guns man.”

Noisey Atlanta premiered its first episode in January and has since featured footage of artists like Migos, the ATL Twins, Gucci Mane, and more. Future episodes are set to include appearances from Rich Homie Quan, Young Thug, and ILOVEMAKONNEN.

    1. Im assuming this nigga didnt see the other 2-3 episodes that wasnt about gangsters. The underworld is an important part of the fabric/culture of this city and most other cities and towns in america and this one episode reflected that….nigga get famous for bein a good rapper not a fake ass activist

    2. migos aint ever cooked crack in they life and they showed some backpacker name vic or vince something bailing his white friend out of jail for molly. then they had the white ATL twins weirdos who work as paralegals by day.

    3. I love when people say that selling drugs, cookin’ crack, slangin’ dope, or whatever form of distribution of narcotics is what these certain people need to do to survive… lol that is the biggest cop out bullshit people sell drugs bc they want to its that simple. if you know what you are doing you can make a good living and don’t have to pay taxes, its certainly better than a minimum wage job, but there are all sorts of grants and funding for minorities to go back to school to pursue an education so that they are not taking in a min. wage income and there are all sorts of jobs that you can have with a trade that you can have that make more than most drug dealers.. these people do not want to work, they are addicts or they want to feel that sense of I’m a thug, I’m a drug dealer, etc., etc. so don’t come at me with that bullshit that selling drugs is their circumstance and their only way to earn a decent living to pay their bills

    4. I totally understand what Jarren is saying, because we as a culture are way over-represented as “Drug Dealer”, “Gang Bangers” etc. but it is a 10 part series and Noisey has only released 4 episodes, so he might have spoke too soon
