With a handful of high-profile relationships under his belt, Chicago rapper Common took some time to speak on the various relationships he’s had with celebrities, during an interview with Vlad TV. Among Common’s most talked about relationships was one the lyricist had with fellow musician Erykah Badu.

He recalled the Dallas, Texas songstress being “adamant” about the two keeping their relationship out of the public eye. Common added that it was a smart idea, but revealed that a relationship can’t be dictated by what the public may or may not perceive.

And as far as dating another celebrity, the rapper says he’d rather date a teacher, journalist, or someone else who isn’t in the public eye.

“I remember when I was in a relationship with Erykah she was really adamant about not putting ourselves on display,” Common said. “And I thought that was a smart thing. And I think for people to do it—Hey, I don’t have a problem with it, but I think you kinda gotta live your life naturally. You gotta live your life naturally and just allow your relationship to be what it is. You gotta be strong within your family home first with your relationship. And then if the public see you out there, cool. If you decide you gon’ do an article and talk about love, cool. But overall I think it ain’t nothing to, you know, you just live for the public. You shouldn’t—You can’t live your relationship for the public. But it is tough.

“If I meet a girl and she just cool as hell and we really connect and she’s a celebrity, I’m still gonna keep connecting with her,” he added. “But man, I’m definitely like—I do have I think a little bias towards—I’d rather just date a teacher or a journalist or something. Who knows.”

Prior to speaking on his relationship with Erykah Badu, Common revealed that dating a fellow celebrity and being in the public eye doesn’t become a problem until the relationship turns sour and the negative energy from the outside becomes more apparent.

“It’s not difficult until it becomes bad really, to be honest,” he said. “It’s like when everything’s good you kind of know how to protect it. Even if it’s people chatting about like ‘Man, nah, they shouldn’t be together.’ And this and that. When the love is there [and] you really in the relationship you don’t care what nobody’s saying. But when things is a little shaky, that negative energy and negative talk kind of affects the relationship too.”

In addition to his relationship with Erykah Badu, Common has also reportedly dated actress Taraji P. Henson and tennis star Serena Williams. And in a previously-published interview with Vlad TV, he confirmed that his beef with Drake was sparked by his relationship with Williams.
