Tom Ford Says He Went On Rap Translator To Understand Jay Z’s “Tom Ford”

In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, designer Tom Ford described his initial reaction to hearing the Jay Z Magna Carta Holy Grail song that bears his name.

“Well I know him,” Ford said of the rapper, “and he emailed me and said ‘I’m writing a song called “Tom Ford,”’ and I didn’t know what to expect, but I trust him, he’s a great guy. And then I heard the song, I had to go on rap translator to sort of understand what it meant. The message is actually quite positive, he doesn’t do drugs he wears Tom Ford, that’s how he gets his high, so who doesn’t like that.”

Jay Z’s “Tom Ford” served as the second single from his 2013 album Magna Carta Holy Grail. The song, which was one of the album selections previewed in a Samsung commercial prior to release, reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ford, who is also mentioned on Jay Z’s “Suit & Tie” collaboration with singer Justin Timberlake, responded to the song last year as well in an interview with WWD. “It’s a kind of validation of one’s work, as it means that one has really penetrated and made an impact on popular culture,” he said. “My favorite line is ‘I don’t pop Molly, I rock Tom Ford.’ I love that he gets a ‘high’ from my clothes. I have been dressing him for years now, and I have to say I think he looks great in my clothes. [He] is one of our biggest customers. He let me know about this quite a while ago.”

While on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ford also explained how a Jay Z shirt with the designer’s name on it inspired a piece in his most recent fashion line.

    4. as I’m sure Jay z is referencing Tom Ford him self since he does wear his clothes I’m sure that he’s is also referencing drugs. A drug deal who sells high quality drugs is also known as a “Tom Ford” in the drug world so since Jay Z is referening “Molly” in the song not I’m sure he’s also using the name in both ways that it’s used ?
