Missy Elliott, who has not released a full-length studio album since 2005’s The Cookbook, recently spoke about why she needed time away from releasing solo albums.
“When I create something, it’s gotta be special and it can’t just be to throw something out there because I feel like I’m Missy,” she said in an interview with Yahoo! “I gotta feel like what I’m giving the fans is 100 percent and that it’s game-changing. I don’t just throw out microwave records.
“When you are creating to the magnitude that I try to create, your brain is like a computer sometimes,” Missy added. “It needs to refresh…Your brain needs time to refresh.”
By refreshing, Missy says she has also been able to see how the landscape of music has changed.

“Just being inspired by things is what I’m grabbing for because music is different now,” Missy said. “Not to say that it’s bad. It’s just different now, so I’m just trying to make sure that what I give is 100 percent because I know that expectations is high from my fans and it’s high of myself.”
Missy released her debut album, Supa Dupa Fly, in 1997. Elliott said she wouldn’t announce a comeback album release date, but the rapper-singer-producer was able to confirm work on Faith Evans’ upcoming album.
In 2012, Missy spoke about her debut album.
“I consider Supa Dupa Fly a great album because everything about it,” she said. “You hadn’t heard it before, you hadn’t heard that sound. Even the Rap flows were different. I think it was 10 years ahead, 15 years ahead. It’s funny, we did that album in two weeks.”
