Ice Cube is an extraordinarily accomplished rapper, but in a recent interview on Sway in the Morning, Cube was asked whether he ever felt the need to chase the ultimate accolade in the film industry: the Oscar.
“It would be nice, but I think if you go for it, you’ll never get it,” said Cube, whose latest film, Ride Along, was released on Friday (January 17). “I think you just gotta do good movies. Movies people want to see. That’s really what it’s all about. I always felt better about…I feel good about doing popcorn movies. You just go kick it and escape from reality for a minute, have fun, laugh. It’s been so much pain in our neighborhoods and in our music. Sometimes, movies is a cool outlet to show who we are on a different level and have a fun level. But if it comes to [Oscar nods] that’d be cool. But it’s all about doing good movies. In Hollywood, you can’t let no good movie pass you by.”
Ice Cube was also asked to list his top three favorite emcees. “Melle Mel, Rakim, Chuck D,” said Cube.
Cube also discussed the long-awaited N.W.A biopic, for which he says there’s been “a lot of progress.” “We on and crackin’. We hired the casting agent… Gary Gray is gonna direct it.”

Asked whether he would direct it, Cube said, “I don’t think so. I wouldn’t play myself if I was in it.”
