Kool Keith Responds To Eminem’s “The Monster” Reference

On The Marshall Mathers LP 2’s “The Monster,” Eminem references Kool Keith.

Recently, Kool Keith gave his take on being mentioned on the Eminem selection.

“Oh, that’s good,” Keith told XXL, despite not having heard the song yet. “Eminem is one of the most outstanding rappers besides myself. Definitely one of the most out of all the Rap world. For him to shout you out, that’s good. That’s a real good thing. It’s like picking a needle out the haystack out of a billion rappers. That’s a real good thing. That’s an honorable mention.”

On “The Monster,” Eminem says he’s “going cuckoo and kooky as Kool Keith.” When told about the line, Keith responded.

“I don’t take the phrase like a diss,” he said. “I take it as he had a moment of his life to think about me for a couple of seconds. That’s really good. All the rappers know me in general. For him, all the rappers look up to him. That’s the thing in general. One day we’ll get on the track. Hopefully, he calls me to do that song and we get a song. Trade some vocals and stuff like that. I’m glad. That goes to show that I am still current. You don’t have a box to put me in. I’m not labeled from the guys that are back in time and the rappers that can’t keep up with the current moment. That’s a very good compliment.”

Eminem has referenced several rappers on songs off The Marshall Mathers LP 2. On “Berzerk,” Em makes a point of referencing Kendrick Lamar, among others. On “Rap God,” Em shouts out Rakim and N.W.A., among others. Kool Keith was asked about Em mentioning “legends” on recent tracks.

“I never wanted to be a legend,” Keith said. “I was always wanted to be just a superstar, a superstar person. I always wanted to be immortal—a never ending superstar. A legend, you know, some of the other rappers like to be called legends. A lot of people like legend or pioneer. I don’t use those words. When you are cooking in the kitchen, those are certain things I don’t want in my kitchen. That’s a certain pot and pan. I don’t like use those utensils in my kitchen—legend and pioneer. A lot of rappers out right now they look very old. I think they are pioneers. They may come on the radio every day, but when you see them in videos, they look old. They definitely look old. I’m still a young guy. I gotta maintain my youth and being young. Me being 18 years old, I’m just starting.”

Kool Keith founded the Ultramagnetic MCs in the 1980s. He’s also released several albums, including this year’s Total Orgasm I and Total Orgasm II. He is currently working on a new album, which does not have an official title yet.

“I am almost finished,” Keith said of his new project. “I got to link it all together. I might call my album…I might name my album Atomic. That’s what it might become. The name of my album might become Atomic. I am going to call it Atomic. Atomic VomitAtomic Vomit! You know, it’s like I am throwing all these rappers up. I’m throwing all these wack dudes. I’m throwing all them up.”

    1. Eminem gets respect from all the hip hop greats usually. Its a shame so many people on this site constantly feel the need to say eminem fell off and is wack. You must not know anything about hip hop and what eminem did to get where he is today with the underground stuff he released and the crazy lyrics and freestyles he did back in the day. You cant expect him to be the same as he was when he was 15 years younger then or more. However he is still respected and by no means has fallen off.Its just ignorance in the fans for not respecting a legend. If you want to know who fell off then look at LL cool J, Mobb deep, Master P, and some groups like tribe called quest are respected still but dont make music anymore for the most part. If they all made music, even the great 2pac and biggie they may have been called falling off too. I dont hear too many rap greats putting down eminem ever, he gets love from true hip hop fans who respect where he came from and the art of hip hop. Its a shame you haters are so ignorant

      1. The reason why people say eminem fell off is because he went into a more pop direction with this album. I don’t mind Eminem growing up but the beat in Monster is wack. The lyrics are uninspired as well. Except for Rap God, none of them would have made the original mmlp. Also, why is he working with pop stars like rihanna after dissing them?

If it was 2000, eminem would be rapping about how many people rihanna gave head to.

        Today, he’s working with rihanna.

      2. Ce – first of all its one song. He did the song stan and dido is pop she just wasnt as well known. You didnt hear the whole album and already saying its pop. Berzerk is not pop and when i hear that i dont get it. Its an old school style hip hop song and supposed to be a tribute to beastie boys. Survival to me sounds like a bad meets evil song without royce so that isnt pop either. So people expect eminem to continue dissing pop stars all the time? I remember a few years back they complained about that with we made you song. Hip hop fans are just awful, the album isnt even out yet and the expectations are on the level of what people want from a company like apple and impossible to live up to. So far to me the album from what i heard sounds better than relapse so its going to be a solid album and better than 90% of every album released this year. And regardless if some dont like the songs so far still respect him cause hes made lots of great songs and is still respected by most of his peers. I never like eminems lead off singles as much as the rest of the album but i think the lead off singles have been decent and better than most of what i hear now still. However people are judging again after a few songs when the album has 16-17 more on it! What if 12 songs are great does that mean its a bad album cause 9 arent? Whatever, i just think people are way to hard on him and are brainwashed into expecting a MMLP album which is just dumb.

      3. very good points I agree ppl are just retarded and without even realizing it they give Em that pressure for the reason that he set the bar ridiculously high so they expect each album to reinvent the wheel. 17 more tracks to go. berzerk and sruvival are decent and rap god is bananas so its gonna be tight. hate it or love its the most anticipated album of the year and will go 3 or 4x platinum!! And will be lyrically light years ahead of jayz’s recent garbage lp

      4. fell off is in the eyes of the beholder

a true music fan listens to music and don’t care about all of that y’all typing

anyone can make a good or bad song

grow up and appreciate the music then you’ll realize how childish it is to be worried about what some internet clowns say

you can’t even prove these commenters even buy or listen to the music

    2. I take issue with white fans who come into a black art form and have the nerve to say “Eminem is better than every black rapper.”. Technically speaking Eminem is the best ever at actually rapping but overall Nas is an exponetially greater artist and far more influential.

      1. So is Del The Funky Homosapien. Him Nas, Pac, and Biggie are clearly better than Em. Ill throw Rakim on there too

    3. a certain pot and pan. I don’t use those utensils…I just want to be immortal…a superstar forever…

Love you Kook Keith…Goofiest rapper ever. Love it!

    4. You can hear Kool Keith in a lot of rappers styles including Eminem especially if their flow goes off beat by design. He gets “borrowed” from a lot.

    5. Tupac was against having the government raise the kids. He said this. When he was growing up he was basically indoctrinated into Communism. Communism/Marxism is all about having the government raise the kids. The media, and the government schools essentially do “raise the kids.” I think that Tupac realized this later. That might be why he was killed. He was killed as a public spectacle like Kennedy. This has happened to other famous people who started opposing the power structure. I think that he realized how brainwashed he, and other people have been. Unfortunately, using the name “Illuminati” for a system that can be shown to exist simply associates valid research with wild conspiracy theories. This marginalizes any information which might make people start thinking. Thinking about the high-level control structure is the last thing that the elite who manipulate, and use the media, and the state want. Any form of state collectivism can benefit the controlling elite.

    6. Kool Keith is a genius. He made space beats way before the Neptunes, he rapped weird rhymes way before Tyler, he had swag way before Lil B. A true originator.

Btw he just turned 50 a few days ago. It’s a shame hiphopdx didn’t pay tribute to this legend.

    7. before I looked at the bank draft four $7601, I have faith that my friends brother truley erning money part time at there labtop.. there brothers friend started doing this 4 only 17 months and resently cleard the debts on their place and bourt Mitsubishi Evo. read what he said… http://smal.ly/nkY63

    8. The fact that Keith is psychotic really has gotten in the way of him being as much of a legend as he says he is. He’s one of my favorite MC’s, but his output for at least the past 10 years has been spotty at best. Shit started going awry around “Matthew.” Sometimes I think a lot of it is an elaborate joke, and sometimes I think he just lost it completely after putting out these insane masterpieces in the 90s and early 2000s and had them virtually overlooked by everyone but people deep in the hip hop world and backpacker nerds like me. I think he might have snapped…
