Over the past year, G.O.O.D. Music emcee Pusha T has become known for his on-and-off feuds with fellow rappers Lil Wayne and Drake, but according to the Virginia rapster, his words have been known to get a rise out of most people.
While speaking with Complex recently, Pusha T didn’t address his feuds with other artists, but instead spoke on the power behind his words and shared the reason why he chooses to be “super-calculated” with his moves within the music industry.
“Every time I say something I always get a rise out of everybody,” said the My Name Is My Name rapper. “The truth is it’s really a powerful thing. It really makes people act out of character…I’m super-calculated in everything that I do. Especially when it comes to this music game. I look at it a mile down the road in any decisions that I make. Especially now because I feel like the music game is at a point where like it’s probably the most not credible form of entertainment. It’s the youngest art form. So, it’s like there’s certain things we’re supposed to uphold like realness and things like that. We don’t even uphold that.”
Pusha T further commented on what he feels is the absence of realness among those in the genre of Hip Hop as he touched on a lack of what he referred to as a “warrior attitude.”
“It’s one thing to not think before you speak and not give a damn, but I think a lot of people do care about what they say,” said Pusha. “They don’t even have that warrior attitude to not even give a fuck and just say what you want. Even if you make a mistake or say something that you don’t mean, you can be a man and be like ‘Oh yeah, you know what? I take that back. I ain’t mean it.’ But just to have that attitude, people don’t even have that. You know, I just basically learn that a lot of people aren’t like studiers of like the art of war. I learned a long time ago the best way to combat anything in this industry is by just keep constantly putting out good music, no pun intended.”
Pusha T Speaks On Disconnect With Kanye West
The video clip featuring Pusha serves as just one part of Complex’s digital cover story with the rapper. He also chopped it up with the magazine as part of a feature story, which touches on the Clipse emcee’s relationship with G.O.O.D. Music helmsman Kanye West, among other topics.
While speaking on his relationship with Kanye, Pusha revealed that at times there is a disconnect with the Yeezus rapper due to the lifestyle gap between the two artists.
“He’s like ‘You leaving?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah man. I gotta go get some money,’” said Pusha. “There’s a disconnect in lifestyle with me and him. It’s like ‘Alright, well, can you come back?’ But he’s talking like I’m going from north of Virginia to D.C. when I’m going from Virginia to fucking London or Paris. And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ll come back. I’ma let you know when I come back.’ In that sense, when I do come back I gotta come with ‘Numbers on the Board.’ You know, you gotta spark these guys. You can’t just be sitting with these motherfuckers. These guys are rich.”
Pusha T Talks “My Name Is My Name” Delay
The wait for the release of Pusha T’s solo debut, My Name Is My Name, will officially end on October 8, the date the rapper’s album is currently scheduled to be released. The LP’s scheduled release this week doesn’t come without a handful of past delays, but according to Pusha he feels fans had to get used to him as a solo act before he could drop My Name Is My Name.
“It’s been a long time coming but I only say that because people feel like it’s been a long time coming,” said Pusha. “I think it was required. I had to make sure that all the bases were covered. I started out with mixed reviews, with me doing solo freestyles. So I felt like it took this long for me to get people comfortable with Pusha T the solo artist.”
As one-half of Virginia-based duo the Clipse, Pusha T first made his musical introduction with the release of the Clipse’s debut album, Lord Willin’. The LP featured the Pharrell Williams-produced “Grindin’,” a record that went on to secure spots on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Hot Rap Tracks charts. Several years after the August 2002 release of Lord Willin’, Pusha T went on to sign with the Kanye West-led G.O.O.D. Music as a solo artist. As a G.O.O.D. Music signee, Pusha T has gone on to release a handful of mixtapes and has appeared on records with Kanye, Big Sean and other G.O.O.D. Music acts.

Just Damn,
In a year ladled with many
major releases, Pusha Ts, My Name Is My Name some how manages to buck both trends and every other major release, to be become one of best records released this year. In many ways it seems to be Yeezus done right, while the rest reaks of raw undiluted metaphors and lyrical skill. But where Yeezus and Magna Carta
Holy Grail failed, My Name Is My Name gets it so right. Pusha T has undoubtedly cemented himself as a true quality driven artist with this LP.
Every track feels carefully thought out and is mechanically sound, while all featured artists are utilized to their max potential, enhancing both the mood and style of the album. (Especially Kendrick Lamar on Nosetalgia) All of the beats are both creative, while still folding into the album nicely. Particular Standouts include those done by the Neptunes and Good Music.
Pusha T is quite effective at painting a lifestyle good bad turned to artist hungry to reach the top of the game. While Yeezy, excellent production serves as a suitable backdrop. The different between this and Yeezus, however is that Pusha T, truly retains the lyrical ability to back it up.
It is difficult not to reap this album enormous praise, when it so perfectly delivers on exactly what was promised.
Perhaps the only real “issue” with this LP are the questionable additions of MC; “Big Sean” and “2 Chainz” neither of which can even come close to holding their own lyrically with Pusha. Both of there versus feel unintentionally awkward and funny on and all but introspective and fascinating album.
Yet, neither of them are truly enough to detract from the album as a whole.
Surely, a classic in the making.
A well deserved, 4.5 out of 5.
Shut up bitch
