Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 8/25/2013

This week was eventful in terms of Hip Hop debuts as two young rappers made their entrance in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Top 200 Albums charts. Representing two different collectives, Odd Future and A$AP Mob respectively, Earl Sweatshirt and A$AP Ferg broke through as solo artists this week with their releases. Sweatshirt’s Doris had the strongest showing of all first week sales in Hip Hop as he landed at #5 for the week. A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord broke through in the #9 slot, just above Jay Z’s still-charting Magna Carta Holy Grail.

But perhaps one of the more intriguing stories in the charts came from an album that has been out for 10 weeks. Kanye West’s Yeezus found a resurgence on the same week he revealed the first public photograph of North West, his child with Kim Kardashian. The significant jump on the charts, from 61 to 49, also came on the week West was scheduled to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards. Kanye’s resurgence on the charts has allowed Yeezus to reach 517,000 in sales to date.

Another impressive feat comes from an album that’s been out for over 40 weeks. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who were prominent winners at this week’s MTV Video Music Awards, found another milestone with The Heist. The album reached 1,000,000 units sold this week—their first platinum (or gold) album. Mack & Lewis released The Heist independently and have had three successful commercial hits, including “Thrift Shop,” “Can’t Hold Us” and the most recent, “Same Love.”

Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris Lands The Odd Future Emcee In The Top 5

Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris helped the Odd Future emcee earn a Top 5 placement after first week sales were totaled. Doris has garnered critical acclaim, including a 4/5 rating on HipHopDX. The album, which features various artists including Vince Staples and Mac Miller, was released through Columbia Records. This is not the first Odd Future-affiliated release to hit the charts. Two recent examples of this came in 2012 as The OF Tape Vol. 2 compilation entered the Hip Hop & R&B charts at #1 with 40,000 copies sold. Fellow OF member Frank Ocean also placed on the charts the same year with his debut album, channel ORANGE, which sold 131,000. With Doris, Sweatshirt follows the chart success of longtime friend and collaborator Tyler, the Creator, who sold 89,000 copies of his latest album, this year’s Wolf, in its first week.

    A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord Captivates At #9

A$AP Ferg has arrived on the charts with Trap Lord. While his A$AP Mob colleague A$AP Rocky has had over 30 weeks on the charts with Long.Live.A$AP, Ferg has entered his first week of sales at #9. The album’s single “Shabba” features Rocky but Trap Lord is all about Ferg and it shows that there is some room for yet another A$AP in the game. This bodes well for the crew in a month where they have announced an upcoming Mob project for October. The sales also follow a recent cypher, where Ferg aimed lines towards Kendrick Lamar, following his “Control” verse. “I’m the new 50 Cent,” Ferg said in his rap. “I will fuckin’ Ja Rule ya, boy / ‘Sh-sh-sh-shabba Ranks,’ before I hit you with the toola boy / Hit ’em wit the chopsticks, I will fuckin’ Thai food ya boy / I don’t sell rocks, nigga I smoke ’em / Fuck around on crack and that’s no jokin’ / The weed had me laced, I started West Coastin’ / The shit was too potent, now I’m ready to poke somethin’ / Rock, wanna know somethin? / Sherane got good brain / a couple Harlem niggas had that bitch up in a chicken wing / You Top Dawg?” Whether dissing, trapping or dancing, Trap Lord has allowed A$AP to chart.

      1. cuz Earl sold more than Ferg? Rocky destroyed Tyler’s sales now go ride a skateboard and get a tattoo hipster

      2. i just think OFWGKTA is better than A$AP mob, just my opinion. Dont forget about Frank Ocean and The Internet.

Odd Future make music to make music, and that makes them good. They are not in it for money.

      1. They sold 16k the week before and they just performed and won multiple awards at the MTV video music awards this past weekend… thats how

    1. props to Ferg at least he can say he sold more than Rich Gang first week! another 5k and he could have tied Ace Wood!

    2. Yo thats crazy that an 11 year old eminem album is selling more than Birdman and friend’s Rich Gang! the biggest flop of the year!!!

    3. Kendrick was at a million last week why aint his number go up at all if he sold another 8k? what kind of fuckery is this?

also macklemore was at 998k so if he sold 16k this week shouldnt his total be 1,014,000??? why aint his number go up eitheR?

    4. lmao that nigga eminem selling 4k copies of a an album thats a decade old . white boy got mad fans looks like he’ll do more a million first week with his new album

    5. WACK ASS DORIS BY EARL FUCKSHIRT SOLD MORE THAN TRAP LORD? SHIT, HIP-HOP IS DEAD AND PEOPLE ARE BRAINLESS AND DEAF.

      1. i’m not shocked all the albums that are the top selling hip-hop albums is under another rapper who already has a BIG name in the business

      1. because every fucking week they throw some shit thats not hip-hop on there like justin timberlake or aubrey o’day

    6. No one seems to notice how often they mention Macklemore being an independent album…NO ONE who self releases a album sells that much NOT EVEN SINGERS..so get the thought out your head that they had NO BACKING AT ALL….

      1. they keep mentioning it because its true nigguh

just because you and your friends cant sell 100 copies independently or get your album in a store doesnt mean they had secret major label backing

      2. Really is 100% correct. Yes they did put it out independently, singles been dropping since 2010. Once they hired ADA, an independent label that specializes in distribution, and who’s parent company is Warner Music Group, back in February this year, you would be a fool not to see who’s truly behind the meteoric rise behind this album, the machine that is a major label.

It is truly amazing how many people just do not seek information for self, and just believe what they are told. A simple search using keywords Macklemore ADA Warner will give you numerous findings of the truth behind this “white lie” they have been feeding you naive people.

      3. everyone needs distribution. you cant expect to sell and distribute a million albums on your own that doesn’t mean they aren’t independent

      4. “you cant expect to sell and distribute a million albums on your own that doesn’t mean they aren’t independent”

^ think you need to go read the definition of independent again

Macklemore & Lewis do not have a bunch of Seattle guys making CDs in a basement and shipping them all over the world while making their own press and generating music placements. ADA is doing that, using Warner Music Group’s resources. they are no longer independent.

The ignorance is so high, most of you didn’t even know who Macklemore was when he was on the 2012 XXL freshmen cover (‘Can’t Hold Us’ was a single then). It still took another year to pop for him, when ADA came through and got ‘Thrift Shop’ into radio rotation, THEN they got ‘Can’t Hold Us’ on radio.

      5. So if you add up all the information given and critically think, you can see that this great album was overlooked until they bought the machine in, and just let people keep believing it’s indie because it’s a great marketing strategy. The strategy works with the content of the music.

    7. If more of the hip hop community bought more albums, thaen are artist will sell more. Macklemore and lewis are pop rap thats why they sell alot and lot of white people/Pop fans buy c.ds way more than black ppl/ or the Hiphop fans so thats why they sell more. the only thing we can do is stop being cheap and support our favorite artist. I stll buy cd’s if they are good enough or if its one of my favorites more Hip hop fans should do the same.

    8. Earl and Ferg neither one of them actually earned their actual spot both of them had friends who were BIG ASS NAMES in the industry. All their sales come from their signees fan base.

To not actually build your own fan base but leech off of your friends

      1. drake and nicki did do that but odd future isnt young money. you gotta put in more work if your not part of a huge label like YM.

      2. This is how I’m going to show how ignorant many of you are to facts:

Odd Future-press and distribution deal with Sony RED

YMCMB-press and distribution deal with Universal Music Group

Macklemore & Lewis-press and distribution deal with ADA/Warner Music Group

Cash Money is just as much independent as the guys you swear that are and the kids that are putting in work. Odd Future isn’t making music to generate radio play so a safe bet is Earl picked up a good amount of sales and new fans just by being on ‘Loiter Squad’.

    9. Fuck recordsales! Its all about keeping it gangsta! And the only one keeping it gangsta is my nigga Gucci Mane!

      1. yeah fuck getting money and traveling the world from making music lets all go to jail every year and beat up women and smash bottles over our fans heads! brilliant

      2. Smart dude, he gets free room and board and meals, plus he is experimenting free with gay sex…Wayne has to pay for his

    10. to be honest i think they got the numbers they deserved. Tyler put in work to make himself popular, and so did Asap rocky. If you dont put in work to make a big name for yourself your not going to sell shit. Earl didnt do anything to hype this album up but he had time to talk shit about jay’s album. Ferg was pretty much non existant this year except for the Work remix which didnt make all that much noise anyways. Music is the most important thing when making an album but if you dont hype it up barely anyone will buy it.

      1. gotta disagree with you on earl.. earl’s been having a following since 2010, and people have been anticipating doris ever since he returned from samoa.. even without the jay-z controversy, i think he would’ve still sold that much just off his name.. i agree with you on asap ferg though..

      2. Earl’s on a TV show Ed. Odd Future doesn’t make music to play in major markets all around the continent so they have a cult following.

As for Ferg, it’s quite obvious you guys don’t live in a market area that’s playing ‘Shabba’, and they don’t do remixes of a song if the first version was non existent.

        These guys are doing fine.

    11. Does Hip Hop Dx know that Eminem Show was certified diamond awhile ago and is actually 11.1million??? Must not. Btw, Macklemore has more than 1million and has sold more than Kendrick.

      1. its seems once they over a million they stop counting,

kendrick should be at 1 mill 8k, macklemore should be at 1 mil 14k

      2. Umm… If you add up this weeks sales to last week sales, Macklemore has sold more than Kendrick and Eminem has sold 11.1million

      1. maybe because it had rappers on the single. What is wrong with people? you are going to complain because HHDX is giving you MORE information? like it or not, hip hop and R&B are linked, not the same but linked.

      2. Robin Thicke been making music with hiphop artists for a while now, he deserves mention on hip hop sites, even if only a few of his songs are hiphop inspired

      1. no they havent moron, their album came out on October 9, 2012 and Kendrick album came out October 22, 2012.

How if that half the time? Macklemore came out 2 weeks before Kendrick dumbass!!!

      2. Nope GKMC was in fact called Kendrick major debut. He’s signed to Dr. Dre’s label AND Interscope, how the fuck do you consider that independent you idiot?

    12. emeinem is a comedian rapper pill poppin junkie he hadd all the white kids in the burbs going blond and he a pop artist getting famous for disss tracks going at other pop artist smh he not a real mc

      1. pretty sure that’s “you know who” looking for attention, who’s also mad that k dot and macklemore have platinum albums and ross doesn’t..

    13. my buddy’s step-sister makes $81/hour on the internet. She has been fired for seven months but last month her pay was $21124 just working on the internet for a few hours. look at here… http://www.Cafe44.com

no they havent moron, their album came out on October 9, 2012 and Kendrick album came out October 22, 2012

      1. and Kendrick sold more than Wale

and Macklemore sold more than Kendrick

and Jay-z sold more than Macklemore

and Earl Sweatshirt sold more than Jay-Z this week

      1. Seriously doubt if Ferg’s label printed up 300k copies thinking he could push towards gold. A smart bet would be 50-65k as a ceiling and if he surpasses that, it’s a success. And it seems he’s right on schedule.

A flop is someone like Lupe dropping and he only scans about 17k first week. Company ain’t releasing anymore singles and have about 275k copies sitting around doing nothing.

    14. “who’s also mad that k dot and macklemore have platinum albums and ross doesn’t”

Gold is the new platinum anyway, so their plaques aren’t drawing crowds.

      1. Of course Mackelmore is going to sell, whites are the majority buyers of HipHop and they have more disposable income to spend on entertainment like CDs. They are supporting one of their own, good for them.

How many quality rappers do the whites have to choose from compared to Black folks?

Do you think Ross cares about a “platinum” album when groups like Insane Clown Posse and Vanilla Ice have platinum albums but Rakim and Styles P don’t have platinum albums?

He’s got Gold albums, platinum singles and he’s the C.E.O of one of the most successful artist-ran labels in the HipHop game right now.

This is 2013, some of these clowns will sell a million albums and still not make the Forbes Cash Kings list. Don’t get caught up in “platinum” in this era, it’s not about how many records you sell it’s about giving your fans the music they love and entrepreneurship.

      2. “How many quality rappers do the whites have to choose from compared to Black folks?” – so basically because there are very few white rappers they will sell more because there arent that many to choose from, and the ‘white market’ have no interest in albums from black rappers!! LOL most likely the majority album sales will come from what’s being heard on the charts.. macklemore has had a few singles now that has done well which obviously boosted popularity so crossing over did help.. and he didnt even have a white devil label behind him

      3. Yes Mack does, ADA is an independent label that specializes in distribution and promotion, and is owned by Warner Music Group.

I already spoke on the rest way up above.

    15. IF IT’S TRUE THAT NOBODY CARES ABOUT WALE, HOW COME THAT HE HAS ONE GOLD ALBUM AND ONE ALBUM THAT IS TOP TEN IN 2013 RELEASES WHEN IT COMES TO SALES? WAKE UP HATERS.

AND THAT 49 000 DUMB PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE RATHER INVEST THEIR MONEY INTO TRAP LORD ALBUM. I KNOW THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE DISAPPOINTED BY PURCHASING DORIS. EARL IS NOT HIP-HOP, ATTENTION BITCHING IS NOT HIP-HOP, WHOLE ODD FUTURE FAME IS BASED ON ATTENTION BITCHING. ASAP NEVER HAD TO DO THAT SHIT, FERG IS THE KING.

    16. Salute to Wale for his success,he’s for one of the best selling HipHop albums of 2013, it’s been over a hundred releases and he’s in the Top 10.

Can’t wait to hear his songs on Self Made 3.

      1. I used to be a big wale fan. From all his mixtapes, then as soon as he jumped to MMG the music hasn’t been the same. Lets start with “More About Nothing” that was lyricism and poetry at the same time. Classic!!! Now lets bring “The Gifted” although is a good album it lacks what Wale symbolizes.

    17. I heard Big Sean and EMINEM had a three way with Ariana Grande. She came with Sean to Detroit and got that p***Y pounded. Mr Porter also hinted that it happened.

    18. Angela Yee from the Breakfast club had a 3 way with EMINEM and ROYCE when she worked at Shade 45. She got her p***y pounded. Thats why she talks funny

    19. “How many quality rappers do the whites have to choose from compared to Black folks?”

^ had this convo with the crew yesterday!

Besides Eminem, The Beastie Boys, Mac Miller (another indie white guy!) and just recently Macklemore, you can throw in ICP too, none of the other white rappers get that support.

Everlast, Bubba Sparxx, Vanilla Ice, Marky Mark (lol), that Aaron Carter kid, Asher Roth. Brother Ali, MGK, Yelawolf. We put 3rd Bass on, they don’t even mention them in any white rapper conversation. White Girl Mob was an abomination. Look at that list and see the long gone names.

Now let’s look at ours. Jay, Nas, 50, ATCQ, Rakim, KRS-One, Wu-Tang Clan, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga, Lil’ Kim, Foxy, Jean Grae (women almost dwarf the white rappers list!), DMX, LOX, Snoop, Onyx, Game, E-40, Too Short, Quik, EPMD, rapper Ross, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Boot Camp Click, Cube, Dogg Pound, Fat Joe, Big Pun, Big L, Biggie, Ma$e, Cam’ron, The Diplomats, Black Rob, Public Enemy. dead prez, Busta Rhymes, Wayne, and I can keep going. Many never sold like that, still have a career and still talked about today.

Do whites really support white rappers and are they truly responsible for the long lasting careers and new ones of Blacks because of their “disposable income”? Or do they just associate with what’s trendy and just going to the rap show because nothing else is going on in town? Only examples they can use to prove my theory wrong is Eminem and ICP, and I’m pretty sure I missed a name or two.

SN: this was a bar conversation with whites and Blacks, and we all agreed that there are some falsehoods when saying only whites buy music and blacks don’t.

      1. lol we all laughed when his name came up, but he was doing a little rap & singing, so he’s on the list.

      2. That’s wonderful keegs, but the conversation is if you can name all the white rappers, there’s only a small group that ever made it and even less are still around, counting the newcomer (who was unknown for a long time) too.

Look at the Black rappers, at least over 100 still relevant to this day, and many of them had some or very little mainstream success at all, new or old.

There are glaring inconsistencies with the thoughts that whites support whites, and blacks don’t buy music.

And I forgot Paul Wall, y’all don’t speak about him.

      3. The funny part of it Yebo is they probably call Paul a wigger and love Eminem, who has nothing but brothers around him.

        Paul Wall>>>>>>>

      1. you are a stupid ass mofo, it took months for Kendrick and Macklemore to reach 600k… and they’re all over the charts

Juicy J’s only major hit is a year old song, fuck outta here

    20. Damnn Macklemore and Kendrick platinum at the same damn time? And when Eminem drops MMLP2 that shit gonna go diamond, that mans old album is back on the charts..he truly has a loyal fan base.

    21. What’s with the rappers obsession of cars? I don’t need an expensive car to get me place to place. Why do rappers like rick ross treat them like trophies?

      1. they’re all followers.

thats what jay-z and others before him rapped about so they all do it too even when they cant afford, cant pronounce or dont own maybachs and bentleys

      2. Most of these rappers never grew up poor, so showing off expensive shit they either rented or can’t buy is stupid.

    22. “Thats a good friend to have if you ever end up behind bars”

Wale better not call 50. He’d record their conversation, then snitch to the Feds about Wale’s involvement in money laundering.

      1. 50 never snitched on Buck

and i would have put out a convo of that bitch nigga crying on the phone with me too if i made him a millionaire and he started dissing me

    23. FUCK KENDRICK LAMAR, J. COLE, 2 CHAINZ, ODD FUTURE, LUPE FIASCO, MEEK MILL, WALE, DRAKE, WIZ KHALIFA, BIG SEAN, KID CUDI, B.O.B, MAC MILLER, YELAWOLF, LAUGHTERHOUSE, MACHINE GUN KELLY, ASHER ROTH AND ALL THESE WACK FRESHMEN RAPPERS THAT SOLD THEIR SOUL TO THE DEVIL.
FUCK EMINEM, JAY-Z, 50, LIL WAYNE, KANYE WEST, DR. DRE, DIDDY AND NAS FOR MAKING SONGS WITH THOSE WACK RAPPERS.

KILL THE ILLUMINATI! THEY KILLED PAC, EAZY-E AND BIGGIE! ONLY DMX AND ROSS REMAINED THE TRUE WARRIOR FOR THE KILLUMINATI SOLDIERS!

LISTEN TO REAL MUSIC LIKE IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE, LOWKEY, K-RINO, DIABOLIC, APATHY, CELPH TITLED, VINNIE PAZ, SEAN PRICE, HOPSIN, MC JIN, NECRO, CANIBUS AND ALL THE REAL UNDERGROUND LEGENDS!

      1. ross and the word ‘run’ should never be used in the same sentence unless its a sentence about things he cant do

    24. THESE RECORD SALES ARE JOKES WHEN DRAKE DROPS HIS ALBUM HE WILL SHIT ON EVERY ALBUM THERE AND MAKE EVERYONES SALES IRRELEVENT. Drake is the face of rap drake runs it its a fact

      1. Nobody sales millions of records anymore unless you are singing Pop, Country, or rock & Roll. Hip Hop artist makes most of their money touring and with the endorsement deals. 2nd Drake aint even in the top 5 of best MC’s. He aint running shit

    25. “2nd Drake aint even in the top 5 of best MC’s. He aint running shit”

The only other MC who will trump his numbers will be Eminem. Other than him Drake is outpacing the rest rather easily.

    26. “and i would have put out a convo of that bitch nigga crying on the phone with me too if i made him a millionaire and he started dissing me”

So kick your friends while their down? Heartless prick.

      1. if they was really friends buck wouldnt have been talking shit and dissing him

so yes i would have kicked him when he was down if he kicked me first!

    27. “if they was really friends buck wouldnt have been talking shit and dissing him”

50 was controlling G Unit like puppets. Dressing them. Writing their songs. Telling them to hate other rappers just cause he was beefin with them. Point being, Buck was his own man, but when it was clear he hit rock bottom, Curtis recorded him, and has since prevented him from making money. He could have just walked away from Buck for good. No need to crush dude’s life like an ant.

      1. “no need to crush dude’s life like an ant”

you are a hoe. thats the difference between a ruthless street nigga like 50 and a punk like you.

    28. Uhm you guys are off with Kenrick and Eminem sales. Eminem Show had crossed the 10 million mark for a few years now. And kendrick went plat last week. Step ya game up DX.

    29. It will also seem like DX can’t count pass One Million. I know you guys do the whole estimation thing but if it goes over then it goes over. It’s not a good look.

    30. “thats the difference between a ruthless street nigga like 50 and a punk like you”

If I had beef with someone I’d settle it once and for all then be done with it. What 50 did to his homeboy revealed a lot of his insecurities and personal demons. If you think he’s stand up for that then just let me say go suck a dick.

      1. “If I had beef with someone I’d settle it once and for all then be done with it”

like your boy Officer Ricky settled things with Godfather 50 after he kissed his son on a video clowning him and put his artists MMG chain in his music video???

    31. What a load of sh!t thats being posted on here. Im white and I think Macklemore is garbage! he has no flow and he is the biggest wigga in rap. Eminem is respected because he is himself and he doesn’t fall into a category or copy other rappers he stayed true to himself and thats how he became big, not because he is white its the fact that he talked about real life what everyone could relate to like 2 Pac did!

      1. how is macklemore a “wigga” but eminem isnt? whats your definition cause eminem seems like the definition of a “wigger”

    32. Cos Macklemore thinks he is Black but Eminem doesn’t and the fact he is White made him fight harder to get into the Game cos of the sh!t he got along the way, he made a stamp on Rap because he wasnt trying to imitate he was original and he brought somethings new to Rap. Macklemore just moulded in like a leach. There are Rappers that stand out for their own Individual originality: 2 Pac, Eminem, Nas, Ludacris (In his Prime)

      1. macklemore said himself he wouldnt be having the success hes having if his skin color wasnt white. so no i dont think he wishes he was black

    33. Sad when ‘nigga’, talking about other people being ‘gay’ and ‘faggots’, and dentaldamboy’s trolling can be on DX all day but when a little church gets sprung they want violate it as spam and offensive. Jesus forgives, but you have to sleep at night knowing you hoing yourself out.

      Tebow

    34. He is not true to himself he tries to hard to be something hes not. Im white and because hes white doesnt make me like him…..hes garbage!

      1. How would you know that? The guy’s obviously being himself. He’s not acting like some phony gangster/hustler like certain rappers.

    35. I respect rappers like Kendrick Lamar who actually have SOMETHING TO SAY on their album and not just a bunch of just bob your head to the beat shit, or cater to these hoes shit like most rappers do. I HATE rappers like A$AP Rocky and Ferg who try to gay rap up with their homo ass fashion and nigga rap up with dumb ass lyrics about not using condoms. Just what these white execs wanna see in the Black community. Get these fucking tools out of hip-hop.

    36. “like your boy Officer Ricky settled things with Godfather 50 after he kissed his son on a video”

Ross should have paid one of his underlinks to take 50 out. Why he didn’t isn’t your business, but it’s obvious 50’s time is coming.

      1. Suckin’ dick nigga. Spit bubbles and eveything. And officer Ricky don’t even know it. smh@ this dumb ass nigga

    37. “and put his artists MMG chain in his music video???”

Your very concerned about this chain. The same chain Gunplay just replaced. What’s Curtis going to do with a rival camp’s chain? I know. He could give it to his son then diss him in a song.

    38. “ross’s time coming long before godfather 50’s”
