The word “classic” is one that’s used often to describe a number of notable albums in Hip Hop and according to TDE wordsmith ScHoolboy Q, he’s hoping his fans will decide whether or not his upcoming LP, Oxymoron, is worthy of such a title.
With Oxymoron set for release sometime in the near future, Q recently sat down with TheStashed.com to speak on the album he feels is his “best work” yet.
“It’s a classic album I would like to say, but I would like the people to say it’s a classic. But in my eyes it’s a crazy album…I’m really proud of myself for this record,” the Habits & Contradictions rapper revealed.
ScHoolboy Q further commented on the album as he compared it to past releases including 2012’s Habits & Contradictions and his independent debut, Setbacks. The rapper stated that the major difference between the three projects is that he wasn’t forced to compromise on Oxymoron.
“It’s me. This album is really me. It’s my life,” said the rapper. “Habits & Contradictions and Setbacks was more like—I compromised a little bit also with them projects. ‘Hands On The Wheel’ was like I really was like ‘I’mma go to radio with this’…I made this project the way I wanted it to make. I wanted it to sound [right]. So, this album is crazy. It’s my best work. I know a lot of rappers say that when they dropping they albums, but I’m one of those dudes it ain’t like I drop mixtapes. It ain’t like I do that type of stuff. Drop songs every month to let you know I’m really in the studio perfecting things.”
In addition to losing the need to compromise, Oxymoron may boast a “more comfortable” Q. While speaking exclusively with HipHopDX earlier in the year, the rapper shared a few words of advice for his fellow emcees as he touched on his increased comfortability with music.
“I feel like all rappers, the more comfortable you are, the better your raps are gon’ be. When I was in the studios [before], I wrote the verse, and I wasn’t comfortable, but I just did it anyway,” said Q. “The more comfortable you are with your music, the iller you gon’ get. You feel confident and comfortable in your voice and find yourself.”

What do all of you YMCMB haters have to say about SchoolGirl Q’s teardrops?
… Q was in a gang …. Lil Wayne rapped when he was 14 …. when did he kill someone and when was he in a gang….. he is just fake ….. .Schoolboy Q is REAL
Killing people make you “real”? lol
What makes wayne real? Right now q’s music is realer than wayne’s shit, waynes shit used to be up there but q is young and up and coming that shit happens bruh
^^You dummies are quick to feed the trolls…
^^^^^^^^^Fools above me never killed anyone therefore they suck!!!!
fucken stop talking about how good your album is when noone besides you has listend fooool!
this is the story of the man who says he has a big dick but never put it out…
^FAG Alert
soooo… after this we get a black hippy album ?
and detox just a mix away
lol, a year and a half later, and still no Detox. Why, Q, WHY
I think Ab-Soul is up next, then maybe Jay Rock. I would not hold my breathe waiting for a Black Hippy album.
I like Q’s music, but I feel like he’s kinda fucking himself by continuing to say that his album is going to be a classic. Better live up to the expectations, shit, he might as well say that the album is awful, that would work better
I don’t know what to say about this article? Maybe, good job? Or how bout, “I hope its a classic too”.
it’s better than rappers saying their album will be the best work of the last decade
Or when send a pic of themselves in the studio pretending that they writting tracks, and dr dre and eminem is standing behind them.
dont label ur own shit as classic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KHCqYCyWD4
thats a bad way to raise expectations, the album will probably not meet them
Nigga look dusty as shit get a shape up ya bish!!!
every time niggas make albums they say: its a classic, its my best album sofar! I remember those rappers in the 80’and 90’s never said this shit. They didnt need to do that. BTW Since the 90’s there were no classic rapalbums made and fuck with your game, 50 cent, kanye, diipset etc
i agree with you about these new rappers, tired of saying their sh*t is hot and classic blah blah blah. What rapper is really going to be like, my new stuff is okay.
but as far as classic after the 90’s go….
blueprint
get rich or die trying
college dropout
stillmatic
black album
common’s be
i would even throw watch the throne on that list… just to name a few
Go hop in a time machine or better yet kill yourself.
there are lots of classics since the 90s fuckboi
All the albums you listed are commercial. And Watch The Throne ain’t anywhere near a classic.
Try Cannibal Ox – The Cold Vein, El-P – I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, Blu & Exile – Below The Heavens even Fashawn – Boy Meets World, Section 8 and GKMC are both up there too.
no one knows hip hop
there are a lot of classics
Lil Wayne – Tha Carter III / Tha Carter IV / Rebirth / Human Being 2
Drake – Take Care / Thank Me Later
Rick Ross – Deeper Than Rap / Teflon Don / God Forgives
kanyes first 2 albums the blueprint, stillmatic and dipsets first album were close but not quite, 2006 or 07 was the last yr i remmeber there being good albums and mixtapes around ever since then its slowley fell off now damn near everyone just lives off the mixtape scene, i remember when dipset got made fun of for doing so many mixtapes now look thats the base of the game
All those mix tapes from Dip Set is what made me not like them any more. I loved Diplomatic Immunity, but by the time DI2 came out, i was tired of them.
and to drizzy1, so what if it is commercial, are you gonna say cannibal ox is better than nas cuz he is more commercial? you remind me of the dudes who ONLY listen to non-commercial music and sit there and hate on stuff a lot of people like.
Drizzy haha. so nothing thats commercial can be a classic, you have to be good enough for the underground but not good enough to be signed to make a classic albulm. good logic lol.
Drop the album, the fans will decide if your album is a classic!
wont be classic if he keeps that yaya on it
