A little over two years ago, an unauthorized version of Kanye West’s “Mama’s Boyfriend” (or “Mama’s Boy”) leaked online and while the song did feature West’s vocals, it was set to production from what was later revealed to be an unknown party. During an event held during the Red Bull Music Academy, Q-Tip resolved some of the mystery surrounding the song as he treated fans to an unreleased version of “Mama’s Boyfriend,” which he produced.

During the interview, Q-Tip later revealed that numerous versions of “Mama’s Boyfriend,” which was recorded during the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sessions, were made. In fact, one version in particular boasted a guest appearance from Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy.

“I don’t know if anybody’s heard this song. You can look it up online, ‘Mama’s Boy’…With Ye we try things—we do so many different versions of things. We were in Hawaii. He did another version with Soulja Boy too. He did so many versions,” said Q-Tip.

Q-Tip spoke further on the production on “Mama’s Boyfriend” as he commented on creating a Mobb Deep-inspired beat for the record as well as one that takes its cue from Billy Joel’s “Moving On Up.”
