While attending Austin’s South By Southwest (SXSW) festival last month, Louisiana rapper Mystikal caught up with HOT 97’s Peter Rosenberg for Rosenberg’s one and only SXSW interview.
A great portion of the interview focused on the several years Mystikal spent in prison before being released on January 14, 2012.
“It was tough. The first thing I had to do was just adjust to the difference in the situations they self,” Mystikal explained. “Coming from being able to do whatever the fuck I wanted to to doing nothing without permission….Seriously though it was a lot of respect. A lot of guys were fans there. And they had a lot of talent inside that place too. And I’m sitting my talented ass in there with ‘em.”
While speaking on the biggest visit he received while incarcerated the rapper spoke on a visit he received from former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, a visit that he says carried him for years.

“The first big visit I got was Shaquille O’Neal,” said Mystikal. “He came through, it was eight o’clock. ‘Come put your visiting clothes on, get a haircut.’ I’m thinking it’s an attorney visit. I’m thinking I’m finna go home. I didn’t know what the fuck it was. Shaq’s big ass, ‘You alright brother? I’m checking on you. You got money on your books and shit?’ I’m talking about he – that shit carried me. That shit carried me for years. Just that regard. Just him thinking about me enough to come through and check on me.”
Unfortunately, Mystikal will be heading back to jail on May 14th to serve three months due to a probation violation.
