Though Hip Hop has had numerous high-budget videos replete with flash, the visuals for Ice-T’s “Original Gangster” were distinct in their minimalist style.

“I thought that at sometime when you’re moving too much, people aren’t listening to the words,” explained the West Coast veteran in on “Yo! MTV Raps: Classic Cuts.” “The concept of ‘Original Gangster’ was to put me in a room with the camera lock-off, and me just rap in the room in different places.”

“I wanted to be like, in an apartment just rapping,” he added.

“I just wanted to see if I can stay in a room and hold your attention throughout a video,” said Ice-T of the video’s approach.

“To me rap is about the words, its about the content. if its not about that then just play the beat.”
