Boi-1da Talks Drake’s Growth As A Lyricist

Boi-1da is currently in the studio with Drake, working on his highly-anticipated sophomore LP, Take Care, which is due in stores October 24.

The producer spoke briefly with Rap-Up.com about the differences between Take Care and Drake’s first album, Thank Me Later. “I think he’s grown as a lyricist. “He was already extraordinary. I just think he’s grown as a lyricist and become a better rapper, although he was a great rapper before.”

“Everything just sounds better,” he added. “He’s evolved as an artist.”

    1. Only idiot would believe what boi-1da says about drake. That nigga BEEN on his dick. During BET’s top 10 rappers of last decade he wanted drake to be 1st or 2nd. last DECADE! NIGGA WHAT??

      1. Ok, Drake isnt even top 5 this decade…
But They’ve been friends since drake was like 17… and Boi-1da & 40 (who drake has also known forever)has produced probably 80-85% of ALL drakes Music. And I’m Canadian Who’s been listening to drake since Day 1 so Boi-1da isnt dick riding, he’s just supporting his artist (And #1 Customer)

    2. Drake took Big Sean’s flow, admitted it, and still uses it. Why doesn’t he just say that was a “g” move instead of saying he got better? Cause damn he did 400k and Big Sean did 90k, I’d be pissed.

Oh, and his singing is fucking. GAY

    3. Ah w/e. Typical producer out there, nothing special about this cat. When a producer like Madlib or 9th or someone in that vein can break thru, that would be revolutionary

    6. “Boi-1da talks Drake’s Growth As A Lyricist”.

These hip-hop sites are really pulling for strings with their “news”.
Either that or his team was begging DX for an interview cause it’s a waste of space.

    7. Personally, most of you are just reading the title and being fuel’d off what might just be lack or understanding/ignorance.

Realistically and technically speaking Drake is a lyricist. It’s the penmanship of putting words together of what a lyricist is… Now I understand where you “mad” people are saying he isn’t one, but either subconsciously or consciously (whatever floats your boat) you’re comparing the definition of ‘lyricist’ to an elite one stored in your head.

No, Drake isn’t the best lyrical mc/rapper/singer etc… out

But for him to orchestrate, structure and compose lyrics does credit him a lyricist.

fyi quote: go by the definition not your vision.

      1. Nah, Drake is pretty much bland. Growth or not, I can name 30 dudes in the game right now off the top of my head much nicer, since we’re on the topic of lyricism. Drake is just blah

      1. lol fuck outta here man smh
prob some stereotypical american, on your constant ignorant shit.

      2. YEAH WE ON OUR AMERICAN SHITT AGAIN, BUT WHO STARTED THIS HIP HOP SHIT!! GET THAT SOFT STUFF OUTTA HERE!! GO BACK TO ACTING ON NICK FOR THE KIDS.

    8. Drake has one album out quit talking about growth, until he stops rapping about women, money, material objects then i’ll see some growth but for now he’s the same average rapper.

    9. quality articles over quantity dx. Add that to the laundry list of why you’re not longer among the top 4 hip hop sites.

    10. Also I forgot to put that he has to stop doing pop & R&B songs cause he’ll never get respect as artist doing that.

      1. well ll cool j and big daddy kane did that, but because they where such good lyricist no one really cares.

    11. Boi-1da has some of the most generic cookie cutter sounding beats of all time….Figures that he would think Drakes lyrics are amazing.

    12. Hmmm…I think he is kind of maturing as an artist though. Dreams Money Can Buy was kind of dope and he showed that he can get really emotional in his rapping. But, the other two tracks that followed were just boring. One thing that he should learn to do is stop singing so much. I understand that thats a skill of yours but dude…you singin on EVERY FUCKIN HOOK! It gets repetitive and only makes you more boring after a while.

    13. Just cause hes gettin more “emotional”, which i dont see how he is, on his tracks, doesnt mean hes evolving…. maybe when he stops talking about bitches leaving him, or talkin bout money with his weekend “lil-wayne” metaphor rap and start talking about whats relivent to 90% of america than I would sit back and say, 1-da got a point….. but until then drake is still the average everyday up and coming rapper…. that doesnt just go for drake, that goes for a lot of “new school” cats in the game

      1. Theyre both from Canada….Im pretty sure both could give two fucks less about what average Americans think. They just want your money…

    14. The kid boi1da is funny! its ok to just say “Drake is evolving”. You don’t have to back track and say that he was already great, LOL.

    15. Drake is not a lyricist. He just grabs the Mic and does some look at me mess, delayed punchlines, so you can know for sure he just spit a punchline, corny ass technique. Not a raw lyricist at all.

    16. AH well I guess the stories about 2012 are true….well done drake you had to defy the laws of reality.

    17. Ive never seen so many6 haters wow…;Drake is a GREAT lyricist, he can tell a clever and cohesive story with good insight and hes actually one of the best at putting together metaphors all of you guys always saying “ohh why does he do that dumb lil wayne metaphor style” most of you don’t even know the difference between a metaphor and a punchline…and lil wayne doesn’t do what drake does, drake does his metaphors alot better and is way more cohesive over all….J.Cole and Drake are much more similar than they are different

    18. Let’s get one thing straight here. This is 2011, and drake is considered to be a lyricist. If this was 1995 i would understand why people would get all upset cause drake is being referred to as lyricist, but it;s not and compared to 90% of the new commercially appealing rappers, drake is one of the best.
