Luther Campbell, the 2 Live Crew frontman and founder, is gearing up to run for mayor after Dade County’s successful recall of Carlos Alvarez this week.

Alvarez, who still had a year left on his term in office, was voted out with more than 88% of the votes. This allowed Luke to start speaking about his policies and it inspired him to take a closer look at the county budget.

“When I take Mr. Alvarez’s job, I’ll review the county budget with a fine-toothed comb,” Luke wrote in a column for the Miami New Times. “When I ran my record company, every year we would first go over what was making revenue for us and beef that side up. Then we would cut the areas where we were not generating revenue. The first place we looked was payroll. I’ll do the same with the county budget.”

Saying it’s time to clean up, Luke also added that it’s time to “change the status quo.”

“I feel it’s time to clean this shit up,” he wrote. “Our community has been divided for too long. If there is one person who can unite voters from every nationality in Miami-Dade, it is Uncle Luke. I can relate to young and old people from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and even Israel. We need to start thinking about the future of Miami-Dade. We’ve need to change the status quo. Nothing is getting done.”

Aside from this, Luke noted that he would raise taxes as a means to balance the budget and that he was also prepared to generate revenue in creative ways, including a tax on exotic dancers to benefit youth programs.

“I think we can stimulate the economy with a tax on strippers,” he added. “They make all this money and don’t pay taxes. I’d take that cash and put it into a fund where it supports youth athletics for girls like cheerleading or softball.”

County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, current Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina, former state legislator Marcelo Llorente and others are also running for the same position. Luke acknowledges that running in politics can be a difficult thing, but he also notes that he’s prepared to face everything politicians can dish out.

“I have no problem addressing the many controversies that have been a part of my life. I will have no problem answering questions about the negative side of my life. I look forward to my opponents digging up every wrong thing I have done…So let’s bring it.”
