Dancehall legend Buju Banton has kept a low profile since being released on drug trafficking charges in November. He is currently free on a $250,000 bond after a mistrial was declared in his case. Obviously, Buju couldn’t speak on the specifics of his case, but in an exclusive interview on Christmas day with DJ Roy, “The Gargamel” spoke of both persecution and the support he has received.
“I give thanks to all my supporters who have been supporting me through these turbulent times,” Buju said. “Thank you to all the people who have shown interest in my situation. I know you see the way they are trying to destroy my life, and you’ve supported me through these troubled days. I truly appreciate your support.”
On January 16, Buju will be joined by Damian Marley, Wayne Wonder, Shaggy, John Legend and about a dozen other artists in his first concert since being released. The concert will take place at the Bayfront Amphitheater. Additionally, while Buju was incarcerated, his most recent album, Before the Dawn was nominated for a Grammy.
“I’m haven’t played my music and sung for my people in a long while. And I would like to pour my heart out and my music also for the people who have been there for me. I know there are a lot of haters out there and a lot of people who wish me the worst, but my God is still on the throne. And I just want to welcome all those who have been supportive of me to come.”
