Beginning Monday January 17, 2011, HipHopDX will present a week-long video series chronicling the Distant Relatives’ (Damian Marley and Nas) recent trip to Kingston, Jamaica. The critically-acclaimed duo was joined by respected filmmaker, photographer, author and Mochilla co-founder B+ for a week-long trip that found the group in Trenchtown as well as Bob Marley’s legendary Hope Road home.
B+ captured three segments while the pair visited the country:
Released on Monday, the first finds the duo on their first night in Jamaica at Hope Road. Relaxed, smoking Cuban cigars, Nas explains the significance of this musical journey, as well as the journey he and Damian have shared over the last several years making their album and touring the world.
To be released Wednesday January 19, the second segment finds Damian and Stephen Marley making a dub-plate. The videos captures the cultural and musical significance of dub-plates, which remain at the source of both Reggae and Hip Hop music. The video features a legendary surprise appearance.
Lastly, Friday January 21 finds the Distant Relatives shooting a “Land of Promise” video in Trenchtown. In addition to background footage of the raw video, Damian provides insight to his father’s life and family heritage.
HipHopDX has been honored to work with Distant Relatives, B+, Red Light Management and Emagen Entertainment Group through this historic moment. Just as the music so eloquently has done, these vignettes show the connection found across genre in the music we love. They also show the deep commitment from the men who are Distant Relatives, and why this journey is never-ending…
The “Land of Promise” video will be revealed in the next few days, in conjunction with this footage. Additionally, UK deejay Semtex will be premiering the first of several Distant Relatives remixes that are coming. The first is “Nah Mean (DJ Nu-Mark Remix),” which can be heard this weekend on Semtex’s show. Nu-Mark is best known as a member of legendary Los Angeles Hip Hop collective Jurassic 5.
