Talib Kweli, Chance The Rapper & Common Comment On Michael Brown’s Death One Year Later

One year ago today, Michael Brown was killed by police officer Darren Wilson in one of the most controversial cases of police/minority relations in recent memory. The event sparked protests in Brown’s hometown of Ferguson, Missouri and to this day still remains as a source of inspiration for those protesting some police’s handling of unarmed black men in America.

The jury for the trail of Officer Wilson did not convict him of any wrongdoing and today, many are both commemorating his life and countering the decision regarding his death. Hip Hop, as always during controversial moments in America’s history since its inception, decided to weigh in.

    1. (DOJ report)
Although there are several individuals who have stated that Brown held his hands up in an unambiguous sign of surrender prior to Wilson shooting him dead, their accounts do not support a prosecution of Wilson. As detailed throughout this report, some of those accounts are inaccurate because they are inconsistent with the physical and forensic evidence; some of those accounts are materially inconsistent with that witness’s own prior statements with no explanation, credible [or] otherwise, as to why those accounts changed over time. Certain other witnesses who originally stated Brown had his hands up in surrender recanted their original accounts, admitting that they did not witness the shooting or parts of it, despite what they initially reported either to federal or local law enforcement or to the media. Prosecutors did not rely on those accounts when making a prosecutive decision.

While credible witnesses gave varying accounts of exactly what Brown was doing with his hands as he moved toward Wilson – i.e., balling them, holding them out, or pulling up his pants up – and varying accounts of how he was moving – i.e., “charging,” moving in “slow motion,” or “running” – they all establish that Brown was moving toward Wilson when Wilson shot him. Although some witnesses state that Brown held his hands up at shoulder level with his palms facing outward for a brief moment, these same witnesses describe Brown then dropping his hands and “charging” at Wilson.

    2. RIP Michael Brown

However, I cannot read this without stressing that the one guy who said Brown had his hands up changed his story so many times that he proved himself to be an unreliable at best, lying at worst, witness. Here is an excerpt from the Department Of Justice investigation report. Copy and paste the following, then Google it. The Washington Post article that uses this excerpt (among others) is worth the read.

    3. Mike Brown was a piece of shit scumbag criminal, but it’s still unfortunate that he had to die so young. RIP.

      1. And how would you know, you lived in that community and knew him personally or your judgement comes from TV? We have 10 other instances that are the same and are in the public eye. You have nothing to say about the illicit practices though, you came to slander a dead man. Look in the mirror to see your scumbag clown.

      2. He robbed a store and assaulted a man right before he was killed. He was a criminal. He was a thug. But yes, it’s still sad he got killed. And like the dude say below, he never even put his hands up or anything like that, people just made that ‘judgement from TV.’

      3. The man is dead chill with disrespect ….. don’t call the man a peice of chit thug. I’m pretty your family isn’t saints so stfu. Stupid phag.

      4. The store owner said it wasn’t Mike, but you’re still running around with erroneous information as fact. All you’ve done is agree with propaganda to get a man out of criminal charges who did a way more criminal act than what you are trying to slander this dead young man for. You still remain the scumbag here.

      5. LOL it was on video. The store owner said he didn’t “think” it was, but it was proven it was him from witnesses. And don’t assume you know how I feel about the cop. I hate cops and that dude should be in jail because he’s a piece of shit criminal too.

I just think it’s a tad bit ridiculous that Mike Brown is shown as a “gentle giant” lol and a nice boy when he wasn’t that at all. Fuck MB and that cop, they are BOTH the downfalls of our society.

    4. Tragedy can remind us of the preciousness of all life. Whatever you think of M.B..y’all ain’t no saints either but someone still loved him/you. Lets focus on changing the systematic injustices of black bodies. Peace on the Internets
