Engine number nine is no longer in service in New York City but
every now and then a group of rappers pile on to various trains and rap
an ode to the defunct trade line made popular by Black Sheep. However,
this is simply not an ode to the old line, it’s a mini Hip-Hop party on
the train.
Launched earlier this year by beatboxer, Kid Lucky, the sessions
started up again this week after a summer hiatus. The parties begin
with a gathering at 6 p.m. on a predetermined subway platform. Once the
train pulls up, the rappers pile in, explain to the passengers that a
party is about to begin, and the fun continues. The beatboxing starts
and the rappers flow. Donations are not accepted but Kid Lucky
encourages other passengers to join in.
Some passengers move away but many seem to enjoy the addition to their commute.
“This is the most exciting ride I’ve ever been on,” Aretha Goddard
told AM New York. The 35-year-old Flatbush, Brooklyn native added, “I
usually just fall asleep on the train home but this is hot.”
