Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 2/9/2014

Last week, the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart featured several jumps in sales numbers for various artists involved in the 2014 Grammy Awards. This week, many of those figures have dipped.

Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce & Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Face Decrease In Sales Numbers

This week, Beyonce, for instance, fell out of the Top 5 for the first time since the project became available in December. Her self-titled album fell from #5 to #7 on the charts. The project’s sales figure for the week, 36,468 units sold, was a 20 percent drop from last week’s 48,170 copies sold. Overall, the album has sold 1,706,803 units. Beyonce’s album wasn’t the only one to experience a decrease in sales this week.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist sold 13,161 units this week, a 55 percent decrease from 29,334 units sold last week. Overall, the album has sold 1,329,299 copies. The 55 percent drop has also impacted the album’s placement on the chart. Last week, the album was at #11 and this week, it’s dropped to #21. A similar drop came for Kendrick Lamar, whose good kid, m.A.A.d. city album went from #21 to #39. Lamar’s album sold 8,538 units this week, a 42 percent decrease from 14,805 units sold last week. Overall, the album has sold 1,174,205 copies.

Isaiah Rashad & Andy Mineo Face Fall From Last Week’s Debut Figures

Last week’s debuts on the charts also experienced drops this week. Andy Mineo’s Never Land EP, for instance, was the #13 album last week with 25,931 units sold. This week, the project experienced an 82 percent drop to 4,708 units sold. Another album that broke into the charts last week was Isaiah Rashad’s TDE debut release, Cilvia Demo. This week, the project also experienced a drop in sales. The EP, which sold 8,534 copies last week, went from a #40 spot last week to being out of the Top 200 this week. Rashad has seen favorable reviews for his Cilvia Demo release, as HipHopDX, for example, awarded the project a 4 out of 5 X rating in its review.

Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans Rises This Week

While the Grammy Awards seem to have impacted the charts in various ways for the past few weeks, it appears another event may have influenced the charts this week. The NFL’s Super Bowl XLVIII, which featured a halftime performance from Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, also seems to have impacted the album sales chart. Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox sold 81,300 units this week, a 92 percent increase from 42,428 units sold last week. Overall, the project has sold 2,049,776 units. Another one of Mars’ albums, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, experienced a 58 percent increase in sales from 16,474 units sold last week to 26,016 copies sold this week. Overall, Mars’ Doo-Wops has sold 2,198,936 copies. Throughout his career, Mars has collaborated with several rappers, including Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, B.o.B and Eminem.

    1. Jesus record sale numbers are pathetic these days, looks like Em gonna be the only rapper that hits double platinum. Rappers nowadays gotta live their lives like truckers and hit the road 3/4 of the year to get money

      1. Tech N9ne is signed to himself so he can drop albums whenever he wants unlike rappers like
50 Cent who are signed to a rapper that’s signed to a producer/rapper thats signed to the label.

      2. Drake will come close to 2x platinum, but fall short. Still, to put up those numbers when most albums are flopping is a major achievement.

    2. Damn too be honest I’d expect Eminem to do more. These are great numbers, but for Eminem standards these numbers are bad. I really expected him to be somewhere between 2.5-3 million

      1. Times have changed. Nearly half of the downloads are trough piracy, so the fact that he has sold nearly 2 million now is a big accomplishment.
Beyonce would also be expected to reach one million in the first week, but right now she’s still a couple hundred thousands from reaching 2 mil.

      2. you niggas always expect Em to do more. the fuck you talkin about with your “Eminem standards”. you have no idea that Eminem may possibly be one of the most pirated artists of this decade

      3. Compared to his last Recovery and other albums except Relapse this isn’t good enough. I said Eminem standars yes you dumbass because even when Eminem puts out a wack album he still has more numbers than a lot of artists so that’s why you got to look at his standards.

We can not compare it to his first 4 albums, but even Recovery did way better. The whole strategy of dyin his hair back to blonde and calling it MMLP2 failed. That’s what you get when you try to play the rap fans by letting them know to drop a second cd of a classic and in his first single saying to bring straight hip hop back. Than he come out making them wack ass songs with pop stars except Kendrick lamar.

      4. You really are a moron, OxWell. His strategy obviously didn’t fail if he’s about to sell 2 million, more than any other rap artist today. Besides, it’s only been 3 months since MMLP2 was released. Give it time.

      5. Who are these losers (probably the same fool) who think that it’s cool to “hate” Eminem, please get somewhere.

    3. WOW it’s almost like B.O.B never released a new album. The hype on that one died quicker than rocking scarfs in the summer. That album has already come on and gone. B.O.B this could be the beginning of the End for your short career.

      1. HIs album just didn’t have enough promotion because atlantic was mad t.i was signing with columbia so they are taking it out on b.o.b. In fact, three of his songs of his album album before Luxury made the top 20.

      2. The ironic thing is that the feature artist on his first hit single, Bruno Mars, is outstripping him with bigger hits and a superbowl gig and has 2 platinum albums while Nothing on you remains b.o.b’s biggest hit and his albums went from wood, to cardboard.

    4. Nearly double platinum for Em is great but then you realize that rappers like Silkk the Schocker used to go double plat o_O

    5. Records sales will stay in the shitter until Rozay gets his new album out. Will Go gold again, sell at least 200k opening week, and make you wish schoolboy q was rozay.

BTW, Eminem’s fallen off and people are finally admitting to it. True he may have gone 2x plat but he was going diamond 12-14 years ago.

      1. And still he’s a best selling rapper and one of the best selling artists in this time. He’s not a magician to sell 50 copies on the motherfucking 15 week and went diamond nowdays

      2. you are such a fuckin idiot it’s unreal. MMLP went diamond a few years ago, you cretin. pretty much after Recovery dropped.

that’s even beside the point that sales don’t fucking matter, and that you’re comparing sales from today to 12 years ago… seriously choke yourself

      3. this is how you can tell the fans are all fucking idiots: when they all start arguing about who has the best sales and whether or not the sales equate to being a better album. well, i hate to break it to you, but it doesn’t. sales don’t make an album great, the quality of it does. have any of you peons ever realized that back in the day, once an album did 100,000 units the first week and then GRADUALLY hit gold or platinum that it wasn’t because of the overall sales? it was the fucking quality that made it a best selling album.

    6. “The ironic thing is that the feature artist on his first hit single, Bruno Mars, is outstripping him with bigger hits and a superbowl gig and has 2 platinum albums while Nothing on you remains b.o.b’s biggest hit and his albums went from wood, to cardboard.”

He’s a shitty pop artist that appeals to shitty taste. B.O.B is a dope hiphop rapper but true hiphop like wayne doesn’t get that much suppoert anymore.

    7. I thought em was gonna be maybe 2.5 mill at this point but that is only hard copies imagine how many ppl have the lp in total. this 1.9 plus itunes plus millions of pirated downloads

    8. Sales are not what they use to be. Be sure to checkout thegrandreport, they have some good hip hop and viral videos on there

    9. “until Rozay gets his new album out. Will Go gold again, sell at least 200k opening week,”

He won’t even sell half of that since his buzz is dying. He’ll do 140K 1st week at most and will struggle to sell gold.

      1. Oh, quote-man, when wil you ever learn that you’re not invisible? we can see right through you. and don’t tell us you have an interm quote-man as your replacement while you’re jacking off to asian porn on your “vacation”.

    10. when people say “sales are not what they used to be”, they really mean “people can’t put out crap and get away with it anymore”

      1. Nicki Minaj just did 900k so what the hell are you talking about? People say sales are not what they used to be because you can get the music for free with a simple download. I download with torrents straight to my Galaxy and it takes 5 minutes.

      2. 900K what? Singles?? Singles only cost 99 cents, that’s like a cheeseburger at McDonalds. Regardless, she has a following who doesn’t consider her mediocre. I don’t think biggie is top 5 whereas alot of people do. The point is that People are still selling.. Check Adele’s sales, taylor swift, eminem, drake, kendrick lamar, beyonce. People just want more, you have to develop a fan base, consistency, something different.

      3. If someone sells 70k, people will say “he didnt sell anything” but that’s $700k right there. 70k x $10 an album.. The issue is that most people who get on these blogs, don’t really understand how the record industry works. at all. When’s the last time, you got a check for $700k?

      4. “If someone sells 70k, people will say “he didnt sell anything” but that’s $700k right there. 70k x $10 an album.”

And most of that money goes to the label unless that artist is independent.

      5. Depends on the label too. but you’re right. Regardless, most of these bloggers don’t know the difference and I don’t want to write a book on here.

      6. You forgot about the share for the retailers (up to 30%+huge discounts for powerhouses like amazon/no digital sales included),distributors, the costs for production and marketing. Then the label takes a huge chunk . The artist has to pay his management and taxes from whats left. So with 70k sold, the ordinary artist (not talking about the big guys here), would end up with around 130000-1750000$. Still a lot but not even remotely close to your numbers.

    11. Damn hip hop albums floppin left and right, niggas can’t even go platinum. When Rozay drop he goin at least 250k a week. Niggas on here sayin Ross not gonna go gold stupid. What other rapper got buzz like Ross right now. Mastermind straight got hot tracks, shit already sounds like a classic from what I heard but that War Ready track wit Jeezy killin it.

      Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Unrealistic expectations based on the climate of the industry but I respect your optimism….

The Ashanti song/video is in circulation on radio and music television and the Jeezy collabo is getting burn in the streets, however a radio compatible song from the LP has yet to be sent to Urban radio.
I expect DefJam/MMG to follow their usual formula and release a radio ready single to add a boost for the down the stretch run.

    12. “idiots:
this is how you can tell the fans are all fucking idiots: when they all start arguing about who has the best sales and whether or not the sales equate to being a better album. well, i hate to break it to you, but it doesn’t. sales don’t make an album great, the quality of it does. have any of you peons ever realized that back in the day, once an album did 100,000 units the first week and then GRADUALLY hit gold or platinum that it wasn’t because of the overall sales? it was the fucking quality that made it a best selling album.”

Vanilla Ice went 8x platinum with his solo album while Rakim barely went Gold.

Rappers like MC Hammer and Nelly sold mega millions while Common and Lupe never reached a million….if you can appeal to chicks and the Pop crowd then you can move crazy numbers but if you focus on lyricism and the streets then you wont have as much success.

      1. -Public Enemy moved millions of units & are in the RRHOF
-Eric B & Rakim being considered for the RRHOF
-Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five being in the RRHOF with paltry sales

highlight the major flaws in your “….if you can appeal to chicks and the Pop crowd then you can move crazy numbers but if you focus on lyricism and the streets then you wont have as much success” statement.

And your statement sounds like a suggestive marketing campaign made for the purpose to sell mediocre, repetitive talent labeled as “successful” art.

      2. Awesome dude, so the pioneers GMF, PE and EB and Rakim are going to the RRHOF.

Awesome dude…..unfortunalty for you I was talking about sales success and not induction into a museum.

The fact remains that while Rakim is widely considered as the greatest lyricist in HipHop he was never able to sell a million records with his solo releases while the lyrically deficient MC Hammer was able to sell 10X million copies of one Rap album.

Have we confidently forgotten that Nelly did 9X million with “Country Grammer” while Nas Illmatic took years just to surpass 1 million?

Sales success is not predicated on skills and lyricism, its based on a product appealing to the majority buying demographic with hype, gimmicks and radio friendly hits.

      3. And the debate is that sales success does not trump actual talent, because if it was, Hammer would still be an integral part of the genre, and not a footnote.

The flaw you wish to not discuss is PE made it w/o conforming to your sales “logic”, of treating musical product like soda sales. That’s the quote that you replied to, and what I replied by using examples that you have yet to disparage.

Because the reality is that Common is still around like a multi-million selling artist, and your multi-million selling artist Vanilla Ice isn’t even respected by the majority of the genre, fans and artists.

“Fans” laugh at a Big Boi selling tens of thousands of copies in one week (why do they treat the first week like it’s the last week ever totals? Are you willing to discuss that?) while you read a million dollar tour dates article.

Somewhere down the line you have to realize that you are not addressing the truth, but enabling the falsehoods. Because I can point to hundreds of albums that totally aberrate from your formula of “sales success”, and did just that, sell successfully.

      4. ^ I think you are missing the point here…. the point he is making WHICH is entirely true
is that — SALES DO NOT EQUAL TALENT OR SKILL and therefore should not be the measure to compare how good an album is. Period!
Aside from that its not a matter of opinion that Pop-appeal will get you more sales than street appeal that is FACT so I don’t see what you are trying to argue. Everybody on that sales list is on there because of pop appeal and or making music to appeal to “chicks.”
Your examples are old as hell. Its a different game. We are talking about now. Name artists now that are doing that … there are a couple but they are as you say “aberrations” or not the norm. There’s exceptions to EVERY rule. But as a general rule of thumb POP appeal =Sales Success, Strictly Street Shit or lyricism not so much.

    13. The secret to sales is connecting with white people, just look at the best selling singles from last year and the best selling rap albums of all time.

      1. The top 5 best selling singles were two Macklemore songs, two Eminem songs and a Pitbull KE$ha song. Then a Jayz and Timberlake song then two more Eminem songs then three Drake songs and then finnally a lone AA artist with Kanye West (Bound 2) at 14!!!!!

    14. EMINEM – The Marshall Mathers LP 2 : 1,869,800
DRAKE – Nothing Was The Same : 1,415,600
      JAY Z – Magna – Carta Holy Grail : 1,117,200
      JCOLE – Born Sinner : 666,000
      KANYE WEST – Yeezus : 638,000
      LIL’ WAYNE – I Am Not A Human Being II : 593,300

All the Gold and Platinum albums from 2013 (6 Total).

The only African Americans in the Top 5 are both from Roc Nation, thats crazy!

      1. I am Bi Racial just like J Cole and Drake but my Mom is Lithuanian not Jewish like theirs. Bi Racial rappers are better than white and black rappers because we have the best of both worlds to draw inspiration from. Kid Cudi is Bi Racial also and so are Tyga and Minaj, one day we will rule the world just ask Barrack Obama.

      2. ‘Bi Racial rappers are better than white and black rappers because we have the best of both worlds to draw inspiration from.”

        ^ lol

foolish are your words….I can’t even begin to notate many other bi-racial children who know nothing of their “other half”, or wish not to acknowledge it for the sake of “affiliation” like George “Zimmerman” and “Ted” Cruz

The truth will set you free if you’re seeking knowledge

    15. Man I used to love reading the dx comments but now this shit is lame. You got dickriders motherfuckers who always bring up Officer Ricky or how 50 can’t release an album. Damn and then you got faggots like Malone and his stupid comments. The comments are now lame

      1. Only geeky suburbanite losers call Rozay Officer Ricky, you geek unit stans are just mad Fiddy cant even get an album out.

      2. Only geeky suburbanite losers call people who bash William Roberts geek unit stans, you Maywack Music groupies are just mad Ross cant even get a buzz.

      3. I admit there isn’t a lot of buzz for mastermind, because def jam did not do that much promotional work but it will be a long term seller.

      4. The Buzz is building, you still got 3 weeks, but who cares about a buzz as long as the music is good.
You heard what Jeezy and Jadakiss said about Def Jam, the only MasterPeice is even being released is because MMG is doing the majority of the promotion.

      1. how sad is it that you’re upset about some lame ass comments on a website that you’re leaving a lame ass comment

      1. “This week, the project also experienced a drop in sales. The EP, which sold 8,534 copies last week, went from a #40 spot last week to being out of the Top 200 this week. “

      1. LOL, most of the articles on this site are about non hip hip artists:

        Drake
        Macklemore
        Beyonc e
        Kanye Kardashian
        Lord Jamar
        Justin Timberlake

    16. Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Bruno Mars (again!), Macklemore & Lewis, and the Drake representing REAL HipHop! Eminem is wack pop music! True HipHop heads rep real records! Check the numbers, the people have spoken!

And don’t forget to show your homies some real love this Valentine’s Day! Do something “special” and let them know how you really feel.

    17. I never thought I’d see the day when African Americans were not the best selling artists in a genre they created!

Who would have imagined that white guys who cross dress and white guys who make same-sex marriage anthems would be the best selling artists along with half Jewish Canadians that croon on tracks!

      1. on a side note its weird seeing Teen T.V. actors like Childish Gambino and Drake becoming major label rappers that are selling hundreds of thousands.

      2. you always whining about the same ol shit bitch nigga

do something about it, crying online aint gonna change nothin

      3. albino this, geeky suburbanite that, mayo sandwiches, sunburned acne covered skin, blah blah blah you sound like a broke record fuck boi…. the white man owns your bitch ass, i bet your boss is white LOL

      4. Could it be that America is finally tired of listening to African American goons talk about selling drugs, shooting people, and how many hood rats they infected with hiv? Music is supposed to grow, and were seeing that now.

    18. “I download with torrents straight to my Galaxy and it takes 5 minutes”

And part of you should feel guilty considering it may have taken said artist a year to make that album you just got for free in minutes.

    19. “and thats why he makes more money than major label rappers like rick ross”

Tech Nine’s net worth is nowhere near Ross’s, plus he has to split half his fortune with a white guy, and tour 12 months a year until he’s 70 just so he can have a mansion with platinum toilet seats.

      1. how long do you think it will be before he passes up rozays networth? especially when he aint driving maybachs and got some boss image to keep up
