Glasses Malone Doesn’t Think Drake Is Hip Hop: ‘He Colonizes Sounds & Ideas’

Glasses Malone has made an argument that Drake isn’t Hip Hop, with the West Coast mainstay comparing the 6 God to Madonna and all but calling him a culture vulture.

On Thursday (November 2), the “Sun Come Up” rapper stopped by the Holdin’ Court podcast, where he compared Drizzy to the Material Girl — and not in a good way.

“Why is it crazy that I’m telling you that Drake is Madonna, as a musician?” he began. “So if you’re not from street urban culture, you’re not a Hip Hop artist.”

Holdin’ Court host Big Court, however, disagreed with the Compton native’s assessment. “You have Hip Hop artists that are from the suburbs,” he offered.

“They’re not Hip Hop artists,” Glasses Malone replied, noting that Eminem is Hip Hop because he’s “not from some wealthy community, middle class community.”

Later on in the interview, the rapper revisited the issue of Drake, emphasizing once again that the “Best I Ever Had” rapper didn’t come “from the streets,” and therefore, wasn’t part of the Hip Hop culture.

“Drake is a middle class, that grew up in a middle-class community and Jewish community. He just literally does what Madonna does. He literally colonizes sounds and ideas. He’s not from the culture. Just because you’re Black, doesn’t mean you’re from the culture.”

    Check out the interview below:

Glasses Malone is currently doing a promotional run for his new album, Cancel Deeez Nutz, which dropped in September, and features artists like Joey Westside, Suga Free, and even comedian Cedric the Entertainer.

The West Coast rapper has never been scared to speak out on topics he feels strongly about. Back in 2021, he took umbrage with Ma$e’s “unpopular” opinion that all young Black men who join gangs are “less than” individuals.

Glasses, who has never shied away from his Crip roots, told HipHopDX that the former Bad Boy MC who used to rap under the moniker “Murda Mase” (alongside Cam’ron and the late, great Big L, among others), should not only understand the delicacy of the situation but use his resources a little better than social media posts.

“Over the years I’ve noticed different things with Ma$e. Being critical of people that come from the kind of background that he comes from and him to act totally clueless and ignorant to it, it’s kind of ridiculous. I kind of feel bad for him for even saying that.

“Ma$e is fucking tripping. He knows why [kids join gangs]. This is not new. Especially since everybody’s reason for joining is different. Most of the time, you from where you from before you claim. Everybody else is going to tell you where you from, for the most part. And if people are your friends, like gangbanging ain’t nothing but a bunch of players who are trying to survive.”

    1. Who cares what this loser thinks? No name artists go on a press run and slander a well known artist for publicity smh. And for the record you don’t have to be ‘from the streets’ to be apart of hip-hop culture.

      1. What’s on point about it when we’ve had plenty of artists from the middle class, especially out West. Cube, Too $hort, and Dr. Dre just to name a few. That’s three of the most famous West Coast rappers ever right there. So what in the fuck is he talking about? Ludacris is from the middle class. One of the best out the South to ever do it. Biggie was from the middle class. One of the best to ever do it. Sounds like he’s just hung up on that dude is half white, but wtf that have to do with anything? His Pops is black and from Memphis, and I guarantee you, ain’t shit middle class about any parts of that city. Brothers need to get off this lame ass if people weren’t in abject poverty, they’re not real. Ain’t shit real about that dumb shit. Just means your parents got fucked over and didn’t have a good plan to raise you.

    2. Drake should kill himself. He looks gay and his music is corny. Drake looks like he sucks off trannies.

    3. Drake’s fans are gay white boys who love bbc, gay corny black men who are on the dl, bedwench black women who love white boys and passed around white girls who love bbc.

    4. Thats a bunch of semi-racist bullshit. I cant stand the certified piss boy, but to say his (non-singing) tracks arent hip hop because he is not from the streets is stupid. Then that means Will Smith, Bow Wow, Romeo, and Logic arent hip hop either.

    5. Dude does realize that the most famous West Coast group that I’m sure he reveres are from the middle class. Cube went to private school, lol.

    6. No one person or rapper is hip hop. Hip Hop is only a sound, nothing else. If anything, Nas is the only person that would embody hip hop. Drake actually got about 6 to 10 hip hop classic songs under his belt, unlike most rappers that ever existed. Glasses do not have ONE definitive song his entire catalog. Nelly has about 6 or 7 undeniable hip hop classics songs himself and he’s a pop artist like Drake himself.

    8. Don’t know who this guy is, but he’s right. Drake is gradually being taken less serious as the years pass. In ten years, most male Drake fans will be embarrassed that they ever even listened to him in the first place. Of course he wasn’t as successful as Drake, but a good comparison would be MC Hammer. More and more people are realizing who Drake really is and what he actually isn’t. The majority of his fanbase could care less because they’re 14 year old girls, but his original fans have grown up and are starting to realize what a clown he truly is.

      1. the irony of ppl thinking Drake is a “clown” but are probably Eminem fans. one pretends to be gay in their music, one raps about real relationships with women. one dresses up as a woman in their music videos the other doesn’t. one has dyed their hair and put in color contacts to sell records, the other hasn’t. ask yourself who the real “Clown” is.

      2. I don’t even like Eminem but apparently he lives in truthhurts head rent free. These Drake fangirls seem to be on their periods and taking it out on everybody else after that recent dumpster fire album ‘For All The 14 Year Old Girls’

    9. slinging subliminals, singing is criminal, try hard draining muses, low regard the shang tsung of music, childhood trauma is no hood persona, be yourself you could with honor, the black was absent, the white was there, one drop rule so wipe your tears, while ngas was missing class, you were middle, wild to get passes for living through ngas through riddles, all the pretending to be hard, please, you’re sing-songy, I told yall

    10. Only in hiphop will your authenticity be questioned based on your class and upbringing. Kanye is a prime example of a privileged black brat colonizing this holier than thou illuminati owned industry
