Floyd Mayweather has had a long relationship with Hip Hop, so it wasn’t a surprise when, during an interview with DJ Whoo Kid, where Mayweather discussed the timeline and possibility of a potential fight with UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor, the conversation shifted to the rap scene.
“The music game has changed drastically and as we get older, we don’t change with the music,” Mayweather said. “You have to understand, rap has taken a heavy turn.”
As he was attempting to explain that in “rap,” it used to be all about the beats and the lyrics, and how that’s changed, Whoo Kid interjected and stated, “It’s all about a vibe now … they’ve introduced fashion and swag.”
The most intriguing portion of the interview, however, was when Floyd stated that while Hip Hop used to focus on marijuana as the drug of choice, it’s now normalized harder drug use.
“This is crazy that it’s OK to O.D. on drugs,” he said. “It’s OK to take any drugs now, it’s OK to be a junkie.”
It’s a sentiment that echoes the apparent changing tides of the game where harder drugs are running rampant among youthful urban culture.
In a slight bit of irony, some of the artists that Floyd has associated himself with over the years have been known to partake in the glorification of drugs, namely Lil Wayne and Future.
As pointed out in a 2016 report by Genius, while pill-popping references are on the rise, weed and cocaine remained industry mainstays based on the sheer volume.
At the heart of it, it appears Floyd is a seasoned old head. “When you go back to listen to the legendary rappers … this is timeless music,” he said referencing artists like Tupac, Biggie — and even 50 Cent — by name.
As a reminder of his Hip Hop connections, here are a few of Floyd’s classic entrances.

So so true. Met a guy I used to play basketball the other and he was as slow as a snail. I smoke a lot. So I definitely know it’s no marijuana
I would rather be a junkie than an illiterate woman beater. Or maybe I can be all three, if I try weally weally hard.
Friendly Neighborhood,

Its ur boy #DjfTheLilD1ckBasterd.
He’s right I was just asking my nephew how we go from moving bricks to poppin pills. We call it junkie rap.
He’s not lying. I remember it was wack for dudes to say they were fucking with cocaine and shit, and now dudes be glorifying being zombies on pills and codeine. It started with Ja Rule advocating that X shit when I always figured that was for the freaky bitches you could fuck out of the strip club or something. Then, shit went all the way left with all of that lean sipping and pill popping glorfication. I’m sure lots of the legends fucked around on that shit like Pac’s bodyguard saying he used to fuck with X and shit, but I never was down with that shit being brought into the mainstream of hip hop.
Music don’t influence the streets. The streets influence the music. Rappers talk about what’s going on in there neighborhood. The real culprits are the bonafide dealers. People were popping pills, sniffing coke/train, and drinking lean way before it was put in a song.
Not really. I don’t ever recall a time in hip hop where glorifying smoking crack or doing cocaine were advocated, but if you grew up in the 80s, at one time that was considered what was street and not frowned upon. Yes, crack smoking was considered the rich man’s drug at one time in the early part of the 80s.
I don’t what YOU are smoking, but “music” is a product and it is sold and traded and invested on. Not only that but many hands are involved in the production of music, including independent investors, people with money from every walk of like. Let’s say that group might include bonafide dealers. Some rappers talk about what’s going on in their neighborhood. Some are paid to talk about whatever makes them more money. And the way the game is played nowadays, with glorification of drugs, money, crime, violence and an unhealthy lifestyle, I think these rappers are more of the type that are “sold out”. After all, they would do anything for money, right? That’s what selling out is. And music does influence “the streets”. It goes from one street to the next, ear by ear.
I’m going to quit drugs and be someone my friends and family can be proud of. Wish me luck
sad but true! Rappers this days seem to be promoting drug use in all their songs. Their misleading the young n honestly it Aint cool
mayweathers right
Alot of these dudes look like junkies too tattoos almost everywhere in the face & some kindof rasta lol
dont get me wrong im a busta fan
I am 41 years old. I came up in the early 90’s. Snoop, Dre, 2Pac, Cypress Hill, Redman, Wu… all them dudes smoked weed. I looked at all my older friends and they were like, “Weed? You can’t get hooked smoking weed; I’ve been smoking 15 years and I’m not hooked!” I don’t believe weed is a gateway drug- it all depends on the numpty smoking it. I have taken EVERYTHING but; heroin, crack, PCP and meth. All in moderation, but weed! I waked and baked from when I was 19 to I was 40. Stopping for a few months here and there inbetween that time. The withdrawal of weed is so overlooked because of the fact that people don’t suffer from physical but mental symptoms. I have been going through nightless months of insomnia. Now that I am sleeping I am waking up drenched in sweat from nightmare-EVERY FUCKING NIGHT!! And then there is the PAW’s. The most common symptoms; Mood swings. Anxiety. Irritability. Tiredness. Variable energy. Low enthusiasm. Variable concentration and disturbed sleep. Not to mention the amount of money I have wasted too. I surely hope that I am not coming across as preaching- coz my younger self wouldn’t want to hear that shit either. It’s just not worth it. Please believe me… even weed comes at a price. Google is your friend.
You tried everything except for meth, heron, dust and crack and after this long journey weed is to blame for the lack of discipline and having not considered consequences as loss of focus and money, low enthusiasm (from a downer). Theres a lot of obvious question like why smoke in the morning when you got things to do during day, but…. Youre not preaching, youre a junkie, and every junkie has an addiction story to tell. You want mj to be the culprit – think about ANY other drug that would let you pull this two decade stunt and let you end up with loss of enthusiasm.
To bad
I wouldn’t ever fuck with any of that shit, weed or anything whoever was promoting it. I remember my closest cousin started blazing up in the mid 90s and I saw how much he changed during that time, paranoid and shit all the time thinking people were coming to kill us and shit with glock 9’s and other weapons all over the apartment we shared. When we talk now about that shit, he’s like I went crazy when I was on that shit cause it had my mind fucked up. My advice always has been don’t fuck with any drugs or shit…fuck the women that do when you’re not ready to settle down, lol. Trust me, it’s way more fun if you take advantage of that situation instead of waking up with your own mind blown and maybe a habit down the line that you can’t kick. But don’t wife a woman with a habit though. That’s a disaster waiting to happen too.
Just shut the fuck up
Only sad people take drugs. Pointless.
HAHAHAH Dumbasss… Have you ever used drugs before? Bitch you don’t know shit so shut the fuck up. SOME people don’t use for problems they use them to feel that high the drug gives them it feels fucking great
These days people in general want escapism and also want escapism music as well. So they go hand in hand. Be a junkie and just smoke your life away. Which is fine by me and should be by the rest of ya’ll. My only gripe is when these type of losers want to have children, that’s where its a problem. You chose to be a junkie, cool, why should a child have to live in that world because of you.
I’m sure he can ask his pal Lil Wayne about promoting drug use… yeah, you remember, that guy Floyd came out to the ring with. Too late to complain about junkie rappers now smh.
Right. Its way Cooler to be Drug Dealer and Gangster.
the difference is lil wayne was actually a drug addict. these new school rappers like future are straight edge as fuck promoting toxicity to the youth.
lil wayne was just a fucking burnout
What you mean wit WAS a drug addict?
It’s not often I agree with this clown, but this is absolutely true
