Bronx rapper Fat Joe recently took some time out to speak with HipHopWired in regards to how he’s able to choose a hot single. And according to Fat Joe his ability to pick out a hot song comes from the pressure he’s received from labels only giving him one shot at a hit song.
Fat Joe used singer Beyoncé to prove his point, stating that a popular artist like Beyoncé receives numerous chances to release a hit record because their budget from the label is much more sizeable.
“It’s something you gotta know. You gotta know how to make hit records. You gotta have an ear for it…There’s some artists that are so big. Nah, I’m not gonna say they names. But let’s just say an artist is huge, right? Alright, how many times we heard Beyonce’s album like this one and we didn’t really, really think it was all that,” Fat Joe explained. “You know what I’m saying? When we first heard it. But they had so much money behind it they kept pounding that joint in the paint, pounding it. ‘This single ain’t go we pounding the next one. We pounding the next one’…So it’s like they got that.”
Fat Joe went on to explain that when it came to his music career he only had one shot from the label to release that hot song and/or music video.
“Me, throughout my whole career even in my biggest days I never had that luxury. I had the record label, being that I’m Joe Crack they not gon’ lie to me,” said Fat Joe. “So they’re like ‘Yo Joe, you have one video and one song to pick. If that ain’t the hit then there’s nothing we can do. That’s what the budget is.’ So I always had to pick a hit. That’s pretty much why I know what it sounds like.”

who asked this question to this guy
Joe has a point.
seems he fell off long ago. Twinz was crazy lyrical and now we have soft bubblegum singles. payolas is how singles and trash gets played hundreds of times.
Fell off? His biggest songs came out recently….I remember Joe from back in the day, but give him some credit for being solo and puttin’ out songs after almost 20 years. heck it’s been 12 years since PUN and he’s been doin alright
Beyonce is an entertainer. Joe is an artist. His problem is not picking the right single, but crafting an entire album that makes people want to listen. Beyonce has the bigger budgets and freedom because she’s proven she can sell.
U MISSED THE POINT, HER PAYOLA BUDGET IS LARGE SO THEY GONNA PUSH EVERYTHING ON THE ALBUM AND HE ONLY GETS ONE SHOT. THOSE “MAKE IT RAIN” AND “LEAN BACK” SONGS WERE WELL LIKED BY THE FANS THAT GOT MAJOR EXPOSURE WHILE SOMEONE LIKE HER GETS HER MUSIC PLAYED 1000 TIMES TO MAKE U LIKE IT.
not looking so fat anymore
thank you captain obvious
….wasnt dudes last single make it rain? Lmao..i love ditc but come on dude….
but it was a hit tho right? Ok then learn the difference between cuts and hits…
I think dudes point was that if he could he would..
If thats the case why hasn’t he been on the charts since J Holiday come on dude who are you foolin. Your career is over dude u are the only rapper that has a single with chris brown that isn’t on the charts……

lol his shit extra wack dont post ur soundlcoud page agian fag
Budget has nothing to do with quality. Beyonce’s demographic are the type that will listen to every song, and every word because there is a perception that she is giving you a quality product. Joe gives you 1 or 2 hit singles, but most times not a complete product.
90% or artists out there only give you 1 or 2 hit singles and not a complete product that’s why you have few hit albums and hundreds of hit songs.
^great comment
and that’s cracks problem. He can pull a hit record that’s very Ja Rule-ish, but can’t make a great album. He fell off when Pun died and they lost triple seis, armageddon, cuban linx, or pretty much when the dope emcees of TS were dropped…Hit singles? How about hit albums?
C’mon son, any artist out there knows all it takes is ONE hit song. Did Soulja have a hit album? No.
this wetback still relevant?
Your mom was relevant last night when she was guzzling my jizz like grape kool-aid.
LOL “I’m not gonna say they names” and then drops Beyonce in the next sentence.
It’s funny how people say oe fell off and aint relevant, when his last album was critically praised and criminally slept on. The Darkside was crazy, and “If It Aint About Money” SHOULD have been one of his greatest singles ever. Dude still has it, and it’s because of finnicky hip hop fans that he aint sellin, which is total bullshit. I dont understand why people buy bullshit and complain about it, but then when that same artist comes with somethin substantial, niggas aint buyin it.
i agree the darkside was a real hip hop/rap album dudes like joe, raekwon, etc dont sell because these dudes wanna listen to that skinny jean dragon on the trucker hat rap. joe been around almost 20 years and cmon son that pun shit dead it pun been gone for almost 12 years let him rest in piece. people hat joe cause of all that pun crap but let ross spit a joe verse and ya will be dick riding that shit
when I first started, I was in your shoes and I only had once chance to pick my single, nigga pick yo single n shut up! Look where im at now nigga, you see what im doin now nigga? movin weight. Im up on yachts wit diamonds errings n shit. Nigga i name my kid BLUE IVY, bluue iiivyyy, nigga. I do what I wants to. Pick yo single.
Then I gta say…Joey aint that good at crafting hits. The last big hit he had was Make It Rain. His dark-side projects have bef been quality but doesnt sell in the least
Most of those hit singles spawn platinum or gold albums. That’s not Beyonce’s fault her team knows how too deliver a complete product.
How can Fat Joe know that formula to making a hit record when his last big hit was in 2006? That was 6 years ago and the only reason why that record was so big “Make It Rain” was because of Wayne being on the hook. Any record Wayne was on from 2006 to 2010 was a hit no matter how trash the song was. Those records with DJ Khaled doesn’t count. Putting 10 to 15 hot rappers on a song with an singer on the hook will sell regardless just due to the fact the hottest rappers are on it…NEXT!
As Scumbag as fat hoe is, he’s gotta point.
