Eminem Names His Most Underrated Rapper Of All-Time

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Marshall Mathers EP, Eminem participated in a live chat with his fans via Spotify on Wednesday (May 27). As he fielded the hundreds, maybe thousands, of questions that scrolled by, he made it a point to answer at least one.

When asked who he thought the most underrated rapper was, Em replied, “most underrated rapper? kxng crook.”

Of course, Shady is referring to the one and only KXNG Crooked (or Crooked I). The two longtime collaborators have been friends for years and Crooked is one of the few rappers Em will sit down with for an interview.

Before the coronavirus pandemic paralyzed the world, Em and Crooked chopped it up for an episode of Crook’s Corner shortly after the January release of Music To Be Murdered By.

During the conversation, Crooked asked if he was a “guest in the house of Hip Hop.”

“That’s the funny thing,” he replied. “I don’t know if I got a chance to say this yet. The funny shit is, with the whole beef a certain person [Lord Jamar], I never said I wasn’t a guest. I’m absolutely a guest. I never said I wasn’t. I never said I was king of anything, right? I had a song called ‘Kings Never Die’ …  that was the concept of the song. I’m like, “I can’t say I’m the king of Hip Hop,  so I threw Run-DMC in there, Jam Master Jay.

Eminem Tells KXNG Crooked He's 'Absolutely' A Guest In The House Of Hip Hop

“I don’t want to be the king of Hip Hop. Who the fuck is the king of Hip Hop? Is there a king of Hip Hop? People say, ‘Just because you sell the most records doesn’t mean you’re the best. Even though you can rap 40 million syllables doesn’t mean you’re the best.’ I care more rhyming the syllables. I care more about the craft than any of the other stuff.”

The Marshall Mathers LP turned 20 on May 23.

        1. Shut up, you racist, misogynist, bigot, xhenephobic, homophobe, pro abortion MANIAC!

      1. Shut up whiteboy, you dont have a say when it comes to our culture. You just jealous you got a little pathetic white dick.

        1. You on that white boys dick you fake black bitch just because you black you act like white people ain’t from the hood bitch nigga I been shot 9 times 3 different shootings and spent 26 years of my life in prison did the gang shit cought a murder case beat it all that so suck this white boys dick ?????

          1. Wow thats your decision to spend your life in prison you idiot after the first time being shot wouldn’t a person with a brain think i should change my life or im going end up being shot again or dead. No sympathy and stop bragging you have been shot no one cares

Put the guns down American and fight with your fists like real men and woman oh im from Australian by the way and im white not affiliated with any gang or a cop just a person with education and hope that we get rid of America’s belief that they untouchable and they think guns are the answer they not there for cowards and cannot take a punch.

And I’m confident my sexuality so nobody needs to suck my dick its 2020 stop being homophobic wankers

    1. Kind of a cool discussion though, most underrated rappers. Off the top of my head, MC Lyte and EST from 3X Dope are not usually mentioned among the greats, but both are really really good…

    2. Not a bad choice at all and has proven he can hang with alot of legendary underground MC’s doing features that any main stream rapper would be terrified to do due to how bad they would get bodied on it…

    3. Brotha Lynch Hung is the most underrated rapper in hip hop. Surprised Em didn’t mention him, since he admitted he was influenced by him

    4. What a surprise! This washed up pop bitch knows hiphop like nobody else. Fuck him and his wack ass crew. An underrrated rapper is like Kool Keith, who did everything way before The Neptunes and Timbaland. An underrrated rapper is like Ice-T, who is a gangsta rap pioneer. An underrrated rapper is like Frost, who basically estamblished chicano rap. An underrrated rapper is like MURS, who did a scale of very different albums from p-funk to 90’s hardcore-inspired shit. An underrrated rapper is like Milo, who spits about philosophy. An underrrated rapper is like Pink Siifu, whose sleepy, spoken word-like flow started a wave. But Crokked I? What exactly did he do for the culture?

      1. It’s his opinion not yours. Clearly you disagree but why are you throwing out insults because someone thinks differently than you.

      2. washed up pop bitch… lol… This is the guy who repeatably wears homage t-shirts at concerts with guys like Paris on them.

          1. Paris is a legend. You have completely misconstrued my point. I’m saying he knows what great hip hop is.

    5. Ehh, I’m still saying Fab, AZ a close second. I’ve never seen somebody have the level of commercial success Fab had early on (3 plat albums, 1 gold), transition back to more street projects, and still be around over 20 years later. He has bars lyrics and flow, real club hits, real underground shit, too many dope projects that are good and too many features to count. And still, somehow, he’s looked at as a second-tier artist, more than someone like Kiss who he’s lapped in success two times over, it’s crazy man…

      1. The only reason that fucker still raps is he got madchild behind him! Madchild madE al The hits! Moka only sucks madchild Dick all day!

      1. T-Rock should’ve stopped being cheap and get better producers, he used to release too many projects in a year. I’d like to hear him rap on beats that aren’t crunk or trap. Some boom bap would be nice

C-Mob is working and doing shows with Tech while T-Rock is still selling his albums on iap

        1. I agree with some of what you say. I wouldn’t mind hearing him over different kinds of beat more often. He still does release a lotta projects/year. I’m guessing it works for him financially.

        2. T-Rock def. stayed TOO independent when you hit his level of talent/grind/time in the game and have the connections he made you make one big move at least once with a bigger distro or like you said at least other producers, just something different. Great ex: Killer Mike & El P first with KM just getting Els Production which was different then the southern beats he was use too and then for both artists becoming a duo with RTJ and blowing up.
** I don’t see boom bap beats for T-Rock though and I’m Jersey born n bred.

      2. Eh, Cannibus use to get props until he did that battle where he forgot his bars & read off his phone, but still maybe was being underrated at that time which is what made him do that battle in the first place.

    6. Marshall Mathers has been defending Hip-Hop since day one! He knows, to a great extent, a lot more about Hip-Hop than anyone else. Therefore, anything he says, bear in your fucking mind that it’s one hundred and ten percent true! I discovered KXNG Crooked when I first heard the BET Shady Cypher 2.0, and I can tell he’s lit! In addition, Royce Da 5’9″ is severely underrated, man!

      1. Eminem is not even respected in the Hip Hop community. He is respected in the POP star community because that is what he is. Eminem left hip hop back in 1999 RIP. Prince PO, Posdnuos, MF Doom, Juice, Chino Xl those are underrated Mc’s. Eminem is the opposite of hip hop he’s a rich pop star with corny as emo stan fans.

    7. Chino XL for most underrated. Crooked I seems to universally get his respect in the discussion of hip hop so I wouldn’t call him underrated for that reason.

    8. M is right. Crook should be way more famous and talked about in the goat conversations. He was the best rapper in slaughterhouse and he could go toe-to-toe with any rapper in the world. But it’s on him to make the hits to become a mega star. So far he hasn’t done that.

    9. Bro is nice with the lyrics.

    10. The most underrated is Rapsody. She can lyrically destroy most male MC’s. Just my opinion, don’t come for me

    11. I think it’s a solid pick. I don’t know if I would have chosen Crook, but he’s definitely one of the most underrated today. But of all time for their craft? Fab, Royce, Curren$y and quite a few others deserve a spot in that list.

    12. Nah. The most underrated rapper is SPM (South Park Mexican). He is the greatest solo Latino rapper of all time by far; he was widely respected in the black community in Houston Very few rappers can touch him lyrically. He helped establish the south/Texas area to be a powerhouse in the late 1990’s. He was right there in the mix with DJ Screw/Chamillionaire/UGK.

SPM Songs: Riddla on the Roof, Illegal Amigos & Streets on Beats, Latin Throne, Mexican Radio, etc.

Go check out his highest viewed songs on YouTube & then come back to this thread & let’s talk about it.

    13. Expected him to say Brother J. Not of fan of his music but em is a fan of hip hop. He really should’ve went with Lord Jamar. Would’ve been hilarious

    14. The most underrated unappreciated rapper by far is none other than Will Smith The Fresh Prince

    15. Chino XL- most underrated as he can out bar any rapper death and is probably top 5 when it comes to word play and bars while also making dope tracks.

Esham- 1 word innovator, always has & will be ahead of his time from his production to rap style, true pioneer.

R.A. The Rugged Man- beast MC trult for hip hop turned down majors and selling out before he really knew there was any other ways of even being a rapper but his lyrical skills, world play, raw emotion and song crafting will have RA pop up with some of hip hop best throught the years.

T-Rock- Flow, ambiance, the way he flips his word patterns like a sound bender while having hard hitting lyrics puts T on the list.

Krayzie Bone- Murders multi-styles between harmonizing ill ass rhyme schemes too blazing bars in the smoothest of transitions Kray Jack literally utilizes his vocals as a true instrument and for not being appreciated like a violinist during a solo in a symphony but just a part of a 90’s /early 2000’s rap group and one hit on a Chamillionaire record for that as a solo rapper, Krayzie finishes off my top 5 underrated rapper list.

**All 5 have made talent, skill, and the longevity which comes with that when combined with grind and hustle.
