Elton John Explains Supporting Eminem Against Homophobic Claims

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has taken issue with what it thought to be homophobic Eminem lyrics since 2000. Much of the public backlash against lyrics found in songs such as “Kill You” subsided when Eminem performed at the 2001 Grammy Awards with Elton John, who is both in a civil partnership with another man and a noted Eminem fan.

While reflecting on the performance, Elton John told the UK’s Daily Telegraph that in addition to aiding Eminem with his former drug addiction, the two musicians shared what he referred to as a teaching moment about same sex partnerships. Elton John pointed to his performance at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding, and used his friendship with Eminem as a precursor of sorts, saying, “For our civil partnership present [Eminem] gave David and me two diamond-encrusted cock-rings.”

In a recent “60 Minutes” interview, Eminem questioned if GLAAD was targeting him due to the fact that he was white, and explained the rationale behind his earlier lyrics to Anderson Cooper.

“The scene that I came up in, that word was thrown around so much,” Eminem said. “Faggot was thrown around constantly to each other in battling. I don’t have any problem with nobody. I’m just like, ‘Whatever.’”

    5. The problem with Eminem is, he is blissfully unaware of how he is NOT a minority group. Okay, so he might have been a working class guy as an adolescent, but that changed pretty quickly. What I’m saying is he doesn’t understand how much damage his lyrics could do for testosterone-fuelled, teenage boys who listen to his music. What we don’t want is these young guys growing up thinking that rape and violence towards women is funny. If he was raped I’m sure he wouldn’t be so quick to joke about it. I’ve heard stories of rape survivors and it’s no laughing matter. And okay, if Elton John wants to suck up to homophobic, straight, white men then that’s his choice. But I know that a lot of other musicians, such as Tegan and Sara, are not impressed by the sexism and homophobia associated with certain rap artists that imitate Eminem.
