Through television and radio, Queens, New York’s Ed Lover (born James Roberts) has been a Hip Hop icon. Also working as an actor for nearly 20 years, Lover’s knowledge and care for the culture has been apparent from his years hosting Yo! MTV Raps with partner Dr. Dré and working at radio since 1993.
Lover’s latest post at New York’s Power 105 (105.1 FM) has reportedly ended as of yesterday. Lover acknowledged fans and listeners in a tweet.
No more Ed Lover show on Power 1051! Thanks to all the fans over the years! It was fun!
There is no word on if this will affect Lover’s “C’Mon Son” webisode series, which is featured on HipHopDX, among other outlets.
The truth of the matter is we know Ed lover has love for Hip Hop music;however, like every other human being chasing a check we lose our direction. What I’m trying to say is why didn’t he play more New York artist because a lot of good artist drop albums, yet he followed orders to play the same 7 to 8 songs every other station was playing. What happen to the young rebel he once was. I’m not saying other music don’t need to be heard from other artist throughout the world, but a lot of good artist never got heard. Ed no disrespect but you will not be missed.
I agree with the comment above. It’s time to shake things up. I remember seeing a video on youtube where Ed was talking to Maino about the older guys in hip hop not wanting to get out the way for they younger cats. Well I feel the same way about radio. It’s time for alot of these cats to get out the way. Ed has been around much longer than many of the morning hip hop shows. His format is out dated & as mention it’s not like he’s making ways for local talents in the game. I still liked his show better than the other competing stations but it’s just time for new blood. I’m not crazy about 48 yr old(I believe his age) guys talking about hip hop & gossip anyway.
If you think the DJs are sitting there at a computer screen trying to decide to play what song next, you’re an idiot.
the songs are already determined for the whole day. Some stations have their playlists put together 2 weeks at a time.
the radio stations are paid by the recod labels to play a certain ammount of songs from their label and at certain times of the day.
there isnt very much to no liberty given to the DJ to make the decision on what to play.
Why do I have to be a idiot? Come on son.
To the previous posters,if you ever worked, and you probably have, at a job unless you own the company, you follow rules, which Lover and all jocks on radio must do,its the way it is.As for him movin aside for a younger cat, what world do you live in.NO ONE ABDICATES POWER and if someone is good enough they dont want it handed to them, they want to take it,you know earn it.When you make the money Ed a pioneer made and deserves lets see if you just move aside, that is so naieve(sp).
co-sign
I’m not saying that when you work you should not follow rules that the boss put in front of you.All I’m saying is even at my job I do cross the line when I have to get things done. In other words Ed lover could have at least spoke about hot acts in New York, he never even did that. Skyzoo last album is fire, yet I have to hear corny ish all day long. Then they tell you call us to play what you want to hear on the radio, well when you do call and tell them what you want to hear they tell you “naw we can’t play that one, its always 1 out of the top 8. Hell even I can sit down with the top boss and request changes. Again Im not saying don’t play other songs from different places, but I just want to relate more with what Im hearing.
Another thing white men can be on radio/tv until they die,why should our people be subject to age by our own people, if they are qualified, the Willie Lynch syndrome continues in the minds of too many of us.
REALLY co-sign
this is why “Hip-Hop” aka mainstream corporate owned rap is the PHUKKING worst
i hate how they train…yes TRAIN, like a dog the “Hip-Hop” audience to view elders and music…
ONLY in Rap:
-the fans expect FREE mixtapes/material and do NOT buy albums and RARELY go to shows
-the fans say JaY-Z, Nas, Wu-Tang, Dr.Dre, Snoop…are TOO OLD, when in Rock and Country its a blessing to be old in the industry…you will NEVER hear rock fans say that Ozzy, ACDC, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith Bon Jovi and them are TOO OLD…are you f*cking serious?!?!?!…i agree, there needs to be be new blood, BUT new doesnt mean better…the new talent should be TALENTED, not given a pass just because they are new
-rap fans measure success by an artist’s money/materials (aka rented cars, homes, boats and jewels)…and by the artist’s money (unless its Diddy, 50, Master P or Hova….they are LYING!)
i don’t know why Ed Lover lost his show, but if it has ANYTHING to do with polititrix…its BS
Say WHAT?Man, EVERYBODY in the music industry becomes less marketable as they get older.I watched the Deftones get boo’ed TF offstage last year because the 14 yr old emo audience wasnt feelin em.As far as rock bands havin unlimited shelf life….U aint gonna see NOBODY under 30 at a Bon Jovi concert, bruh.
And Ill bet youre my age (28 ish) but just havent realized that the rappers and artists we grew up listenin to are now legends…meaning theyre OLD…meaning that that aint what the little kids wanna hear. And all we can do is wish these god dam kids had some sense, right?
Lol swear to god, we’re just like our parents.
C’MON SON!!!!!
C’MON dunn!
All of you are idiots.
Ed lover is history at Power 105, and that is that. Fuck yo couch and theories. Nigga is GONE!
I was listening to Ed Lover when he was on Hot97 with Dr. Dre. It’s a shame he’ll be leaving his current post.
To speak on the idea that DJs aren’t making way for younger talent: Radio stations have the control. The DJ is not waking up and thinking, “Oh let me play whatever I want today.” Rather he/she is following a scripted set of music that has been managed and packaged based on the station’s desires. So to put the blame of newer talent not getting out on the DJ is short sighted. Go to any music conference and sit in on a DJ/Radio panel and listen from their own mouths.
As for the idea that rap starts get aged out faster than rock stars, totally true! The Deftones getting booed off by 14 year old kids indicates a mismanagement in terms of the acts paired with the correct audience. Aerosmith (I love them) is OLD!!!! Aerosmith gets no shortage of love. I think Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones is as old as Jesus, but the concerts are SOLD OUT based on their continued love and support of the fans.
BUT
In hip hop, if you don’t have the mentality of a 15 year old because you are twice the age, then suddenly you cannot connect. That’s silly and also short sighted. I agree that I am not going to be listening to the same type of song my 11 year old cousin will. However, that doesn’t diminish my desire to hear intricate wordplay flowing over tight beats. For the 25+ set, there is a huge niche for music that appeals to that mindset. I’ve long been out of high school. What the heck do I care about meeting in between classes? Similarly, how can a 15 year old relate to the struggles of getting laid off, trying to maintain a mortgage and preserve social standing. It’s all about relativity.
Once we understand that we cannot all fit in the same box and there are more than enough ears the hear whatever music we as artists are putting out, we won’t have to pander to the lowest common denominator of topics and behaviors. How many songs about getting a bj after the club can we really listen to?
It comes down to creative control and sadly (or happily depending on perspective), it requires striking out on one’s own as an independent in order to most assuredly avoid the control that would turn all male rappers into Soulja Boy or all females into Nicki Minaj.
Word up. man you said it all….WHAT ? Fire Ed Lover!! He is an I-con in the music/radio business. What the heck How does a 15yr old or any teenager relate to the struggles of growing up/life — unless express by their family & living through it. These young rappers today mostly suck. All they care about is rapping how much $ they get, what BJ they had and just disses others. Come on ya’ll sing/rapp about something. Pls. young kids we don’t need more Soulja boys & Nicki Minaj PLEASE Baby Girl–You aint got NOTHING on Little Kim you wanna be. Kim’s been rooking for 10 yrs plus. she’s alredy done what you’re trying to do and paid the price. Lil Kim had The best beats/lyrics/style and everything. Just stop disses and bring some GOOD MUSIC. Keep it up Nicki and your a has been by next year. Embrase one another, congratulate ea. other. Stop pulling US down.
