Ebro Says Rappers ‘Better Stop Being Boring’ As Major Labels Are Losing Interest

    Ebro Darden has called on rappers to up their creativity as major labels are allegedly turning elsewhere to find talent.

    On Thursday morning (August 17), the Ebro in the Morning host took to Twitter to share details about a call he allegedly received with some insider information regarding the direction labels are now taking to find talent.

    “I got a call saying …. ‘It should be noted many major record labels have deprioritized signing Rappers,'” he wrote. “The focus is now African Music & Latin Music Rappers better stop being boring and talking about the same shit over and over, chasing TikTok success and comment sections.”

    Never afraid to stir the pot when it comes to driving conversation on social media, Ebro’s followers had plenty to say in response to his claims.

    “People are tired of hearing ‘Lil’ rappers mumble about ass, tits, and killing their neighbors. Nobody cares anymore, the industry needs to evolve,” one person said.

    Another clapped back: “So is Hot 97 about to rebrand with tag line Blazing Afro Beats & Latin Music? It don’t sound as smooth as Blazing Hip Hop & R&B.”

    Earlier this week, Ebro put rappers on blast for not publicly showing their appreciation for Hip Hop with the genre celebrating its 50 birthday with festivities over the weekend. “Making all this $$$ because of HipHop and artists can’t even post a ‘Thank You’….,” he said.

    He added on Apple Music’s Rap Life: “If you rap and you post all the time and Hip Hop’s birthday came around and you can’t say thank you. Just know I saw you.”

    Joe Budden got wind of Ebro taking shots at rappers and he decided to point the finger at record labels instead. “Funny, i said this same thing about the labels lol,” he replied in 2Cool2Bl0g‘s repost of Ebro’s comments.

    Ebro and Budden have plenty of history as they recently squabbled in June after Joe made comments on his podcast about Hot 97 Summer Jam having “seat fillers.”

    1. Hip hop is becoming too violent and labels don’t want to be associated with rappers. Has nothing to do with being “boring”; that’s a front

    2. No, it’s called actually learn how to rap and structure their bars. All the new rappers are either gay or retarded or both

    3. Hip Hop has been is this stale state for years, do we really think it’s going to change? If it changes who is going to be the driving force behind it because as we know there are very few leaders in Hip Hop but lots of followers. Carry on!!!

    4. Sorry Ebro this is not news I been saying since the “jiggy” era if they lose the heart of it it’s going to suck. There’s very few rappers today that I even think are actually rappers and not a social media whatever the fuck. Pick up a pen cause we already know most your wack asses can’t freestyle but maybe try or something. Same stupid trap loop in every single for how long now? Come with the ruckus or don’t come, Griselda, Cole and a FEW select others are doing it. The rest of y’all are straight shit I don’t care if you’re rich that’s awesome no malice but the music kinda sucks. So come on Hip Hop don’t let me down now after 44 years if faithful fandom. Wtf yo?;

      1. That can be true to some, but it definitely helps to be on a label.. His point is that the music is so bad nowadays that nobody will want to listen, regardless if it’s on a major label or not

    5. Part of the reason rap is boring now is because of the record labels. Theses labels like to follow the trend instead of allowing the artist to be creative with their music and so then that trash gets passed on to the radio to play it that’s another part of why it’s trash music as well. Rappers should just stay away from the majors and just be creative with their music and not follow the trend just create your own lane and make your own flava.

    6. Acting like labels didn’t search them out and churn them through the machine. The trend has rand dry and now A&Rs gotta go find something ORIGINAL!!!

    7. This is the corporate record labels saying a whole lot of your favorite rappers are about to get put on the shelf. The music industry version of being laid off. It’s all about the bottom line and not the art

      1. if corporate record labels are shifting away from hip hop it’s because demand for hip hop is dropping. record labels are just a reflection of the public is demanding from them.
