Ebro Darden has called out Drake for his unwillingness to touch on issues impacting Black people across the globe.
The radio personality put the 6 God on blast during a recent episode of Apple Music’s Rap Life Review earlier this month alongside co-hosts Lowkey and Nadeska Alexis.
The conversation was surrounding Drake’s shading of Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” on tour amid their icy relationship.
“Drake, who has never shown up, and y’all know I’m the biggest Drake fan on this show,” Ebro said. “Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself.
“So now you have an issue — I get you have an issue with Childish Gambino if what you’re saying is face — but fam, the song was supposed to be a joke diss, it didn’t actually happen. So why you in your feelings?”
Nadeska speculated that the origins of their feud stemmed over a certain unnamed R&B singer they were courting, but she couldn’t confirm.
Although, journalists such as Andre Gee and Charles Holmes pushed back in defense of Drake and how artists shouldn’t feel compelled to touch on issues they aren’t informed about.
“Again, you dont wanna pressure these guys to start rapping about capitalism&voting being the answer &it being your fault youre oppressed if he has nothing to say, its for a reason. stop looking for answers from entertainers,” Gee wrote.
While Holmes hilariously penned: “Imagine wanting the creator of ‘passionfruit’ to be your lil revolutionary lmfao.”
Earlier this year, Childish Gambino admitted the song started out as a playful Drake diss but he ended up turning it into “This Is America.”
“I had the idea three years before,” he explained. “I told [director] Hiro [Murai] the idea, and he’s like, ‘I really want to do that.’ The idea for the song started as a joke. To be completely honest, ‘This is America’ — that was all we had was that line.”
“It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this shit sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it.”
Being as petty as Drake is, he didn’t forget and added a headline taking a shot at Gambino and “This Is America” to the stage of his It’s All A Blur Tour setup.
“The Overrated And Over Awarded Hit Song ‘This Is America’ Was Originally A Drake Diss Record,” the ticker read.
Funny thing light skin ninjas are always the loudest ninjas in the room to complaint about black issues. I guess their inner white dna is looking from some kind of endorsement by the black community.
Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, Barack Obama, Huey P Newton, Angela Davis, Colin Karpernick, Mya Angelou, Minister Farrakhan, Bob Marley, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and many others would disagree with that bullshit
Jay barely has either. Most artists haven’t. His point? That’s never been Drake’s lane. Plus he’s a half white Canadian, which is a whole different experience from growing up in the United States full time. I know he was with his Pops in Memphis some summers, but that shit isn’t the same living in that shit day in, day out. Music isn’t social commentary 24/7. Some artists, their fans just look to them to entertain them. Why I could never be in that line of work.
“Half white Canadian” apposed to being Half white American? What’s the difference? Ignorant statement. America might as well be a continent with 50 countries in it. A black man in NYC is living a very different life than a black man in Mississippi. Don’t speak about Canada as if you know enough to say dumb shit.
if you say Jay barely touches on issues then you don’t listen to music you just skim through it
Canada is softer than baby shit.
@Hmmm Nobody respects Canadians
I don’t like Jay Z but he’s always around when shit hits the fan in the US. Drake is a bozo and doesn’t stand for anything. Just the face of fuckboy culture tbh.
Just lets me know you’re an ignorant white boy. Growing up in this country where slavery and Jim Crow was sanctioned and celebrated for most of its existence is different. It’s why a lot of black people and foreign black people don’t see eye to eye on a lot of shit because some of them try to downplay what we’ve been through in this country getting shit on at every turn. White people don’t even want to acknowledge that police treat us differently, let alone fix the problem. I haven’t heard of any police brutality cases in Canada.
Jay had a whole bar dissing Nas for kicking knowledge and talking about how he hasn’t been rapping like Common since he saw the dollars that pop rap pays. he barely made a conscious song until he was in his 40s. You people need to get out of this revisionist history shit. Furthermore, these same NY dickriders like Ebro had the biggest real-time contrast of this ever between Pac and Biggie, who never spoke on any social issues whatsoever while Pac always did on and off the mike, and they went with the home team. So FOH with this I’m gatekeepying the culture to be conscious now 25 years later, and trying to do it with someone who isn’t even from here is beyond lame.
Name all of those conscious songs from Jay’s first ten years in the game. I’ll wait, and I’m not talking about his songs about personal struggle because Drake has those just the same, however lame they sound coming from him. We’re talking about social issues. Some Keep Your Head Up, Brenda’s Got a Baby shit reflecting on issues that black people go through in this country. He was doing the exact same thing Drake was doing talking about Money Ain’t a Thang in between telling his dope boy stories. He’s not the only one. Lil Wayne didn’t. Snoop didn’t. Biggie didn’t. Eminem didn’t. Fifty didn’t. You can go down the line. Nas, Pac, and Kendrick Lamar are the few who got that big and did it at the height of their powers.
How do you know what Drake does behind the scenes as far as social issues? Furthermore, we’re not talking about that. We’re talking about music and interviews speaking on black issues that we face in America, and at the same time in his career, Jay and Drake have the exact same track record. Drake might make a 4;44 when he’s damn near 50 too. Yu want me to give him a cookie for that like you’re trying to give Jay? The funny thing is that Jay got shit on for making that album too even when he was past his prime, so imagine had he done it in 1997 instead of 2017, which kind of proves my point about how stupid this whole conversation is because these people are entertainers at the end of the day and that’s all most of you want, and certain artists, you want them to stay in their lane.
He’s j3w!$h
Fuck Canada and american fucking girls for life… stupid ass rapping cock suckers
Drake’s a pop artists, he makes chick music. Nobody cares about what his views are.
No, Drake makes homo music… music to get poked to…His views are usually from the dick… just like you.
You need to get off my dick, weirdo
Drake is one of the shallowest people and artists ever. No one should expect anything from him.
apart from consistent hits, yes
Why should he? He’s not obligated to. We need to stop waiting for celebs. Start fixing our own communities. Quit talking and do something. Stop supporting the murderers..drug dealers..rapists. If your waiting for the government to do something you Will be waiting a long time.
I don’t think Ebro’s point was that Drake should be speaking up on black issues more. It’s that he doesn’t allow himself to get upset enough to speak on black issues but does find himself in his feelings over a potential joke diss that never actually happened. Seemed he was more questioning his priorities on when to respond to “issues”
You were about the only one to pick up on the nuance of what Ebro was saying…Drake doesn’t need to speak on these issues but when someone does don’t be petty af and diss it.
Drake doesn’t live in America. you want him to comment on a different countries problems? ebro has been delusional but this takes the cake. i havent seen tems commenting on chicago gun violence. i havent seen will.i.am commenting on BLM. lil wayne intentionally doesn’t talk about this crap. lets crucify the half black half white guy for not using him millions on fake causes.
What does Drake know about these issues? He was raised in the suburbs by his J mother. He would look as fake as Colin Kaep if he did.

This is a great point because there was a large part of the black population who shit on that guy exactly because of this, and he’s from here. How many times did I hear what does he know about this because his adoptive parents are white and he’s mixed? Plenty. But Drake is supposed to do it because he’s a popular rapper, which is beyond stupid. And before anybody says that Kaepernick wasn’t that big, dude had gone to the Super Bowl a couple of years before and had a hundred million dollar contract. Yet it wasn’t just white people shitting on him for even having anything to say.
They shit themselves when called on to talk about israel palestine about the only notable celeb michael jackson roger waters pink floyd gets torn down ppl think he anti semitic if it were drake he would be in the kanye west club so fast certainly not any black man black women almost any other with a high public profile in entertainment in music lie through their teeth all too fucking afraid to speak on israel its disgusting it ain’t right
We lucky we got Drake. The artist around him don’t cut it.
