E-40 Explains Why He Didn’t Hop On Nipsey Hussle’s “Grinding All My Life”

E-40 stopped by The Breakfast Club studios in New York City this week. At one point during the conversation, the seasoned Hip Hop vet explained why he didn’t take the opportunity to collaborate with Nipsey Hussle on the Victory Lap single “Grinding All My Life.”

“He sent me a song dude and I’m so mad I didn’t get on it,” he admits around the 22-minute mark. “I tried to, but it was crunch time for me. He needed it back with the hurry-up. It was called, ‘All my life …’ He sent me that one. That was a few years ago and I was moving around. When he sent it, it was way before Victory Lap. We are busy people. We never tripped on any of that.”

The Bay Area rap pioneer also talked about the impact Nip had on the culture and took note that more people seem to be on the Nipsey bandwagon since his March 31 shooting death.

“Man, I love Nipsey,” he says. “When that happened, that really hurt me because I feel like Nipsey is somebody that was very important to the culture … He [Nipsey] really meant a lot. More people are woke now to Nipsey. It’s sad to say how it happens once somebody passes away, you know what I mean?

“He definitely did his job while he was on this earth. That’s how God do it sometimes. Sometimes he takes the good ones.”

Victory Lap was released in February 2018 and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release. The week after Nip’s death, the album returned to the Top 5, landing at No. 2.

      1. 40 water Iz a Legend n the bay dumb ass…. U garbage jus fo speakn on his name hoe ass…. 40 woulda lit that song up…U not noing music ass hoe…Legends neva die… Salute ?

        1. Relax bro. Not everyone has to agree with your dumb ass opinion. That track did not need 40 on it.

          1. Boss Tellin The Truth ! Ya’ll Love To Hate On 40 ! He Ain’t Trippin ! 51 yrs. Ole And Still Bringing Heat !

    1. @show u are very disrespectful, when u speak on 40 U REALLY NEED to put some respect with it. 40 is a legend and like someone mentioned below if Nipsey didn’t think he would have been good on that song he never would have asked him. If ur NOT a fan of 40 then that’s fine but don’t try to diss him because he’s raw as fuck. Just no this 40; is LOVED by FEW, HATED by MANY hut RESPECTED by ALL! R.I.P NIPSEY

      1. E40 sounds like he’s a cartoon lol he’s sooooo shitty, literally one of the worst rappers I’ve ever heard in my life and I’ve heard plenty of e40 garbage and always the same thoughts, take this shit off! And nipsey wasn’t as shitty but nobody cared till he died so another crappy rapper

      1. Doesn’t make his music good nor does it make him a good rapper, just a cool story, he’s such a shitty rapper he never even rapped about the most interesting story of his whole career

    2. Nipsey was a shitty rapper and just because he died people wanna act like he was the best but when he was alive most of those people never even heard a nipsey song, its that bandwagon thing, if he was alive he’d be as mediocre as ever and nobody would be checking for his music, he would’ve been fading away as a rapper by now

      1. I just don’t agree I mean you have your own opinion but that was silly of you . Neighborhood Nip been a West coast legend at a young age and to say his flow was mediocre is just hate. His Grammy nod was LONG OVERDUE

        1. So because someone does good things for the community makes him a good rapper? 2 completely different things one has nothing to do with another, none of you were checking for nipsey before he got killed regardless of all that great community work, he was a mediocre rapper and it took for him to die for you fake ass fans to hop on this nipsey bandwagon but he just wasn’t such a good rapper, philanthropy does not equal good music 2 different worlds

          1. Are you from Cali? my bad are you from L.A. cause I am, one does have to do with each other, his rap from the early yrs, plus his involvement in the early yrs with his homies gave him his name, matter of fact he gave himself his own name by doing it his way(his raps) not allowing another to crush his dream’s about his shit… Nip rapped what he loved and who he was…no filter and if anyone that’s about that life would understand, which makes most of us love him even more on top of fire lyrics and dope tracks, dope collabs with pioneers in the game….you can’t put everybody in that circle cause me…I’ve been on Nip since 2011

      2. It wasn’t all about the man’s raps. It is about what he did for the community he came from. He was a voice for his community that was respected. He spent his rap money on helping schools, building parks & education centers even for adults and a shitload more, all this man did was to help build up the community. He would go to the schools and talk to kids about there possible futures if they stay away from gang life, and always preach anti-gun pulling approach during dealing with any conflicts. He stood for something real. Regardless of what anyone wants to think of his flow or bars or whatever. Most rappers invest in themselves, he invested in something real that outlived him. Others need to take note on how he lived and ask the question If i die today, will i leave any impact, and what impact will i leave?

    3. Fake ass fans a player hater to the fullest. Nip was connected with too many big players for you to say that. T. I. was one of them. You know he could have collaborated with Tip and made platinum status. E-40 would have helped landed on top of the billboards too. It just unfortunately he passed away. Your jealous ass gone say that.
