DX News Bits: Lil Wayne’s Tour His Highest-Grossing, Birdman Talks “Carter IV,” “Like Father, Like Son”

Lil Wayne’s star has not lost any luster as the result of his prison stint, as his  “I Am Still Music” tour is his highest-grossing.

Billboard reports that the tour is averaging over 10,000 in attendance per night, and a summer leg is being planned.

The tour includes support from Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Travis Barker, Wayne’s new signee Porcelain Black, as well as the Young Money crew.

“The fans stuck with him,” says Tour producer Shawn Gee. “I think [it helped] having Drake and Nicki Minaj reminding people that Wayne is still current and meaningful, as well there were several projects that he planned and put out while he was incarcerated that the fans loved. It built up anticipation.”

In related news, Cash Money Records co-head Bryan “Birdman” Williams provided Billboard with status updates on Wayne’s Tha Carter IV and the sequel to Like Father, Like Son.

“He sounds brand new to me,” says Birdman of Carter IV. “There’s a new energy… just a different energy. He can still rap his ass off, but he took his raps to another level. To me, he went back to that traditional raw Cash Money music, just raw beats, 808s popping off and Wayne rapping, hard. It really sounds great to me.”

And what of the sequel to 2006’s collaborative LP between Wayne and Birdman, Like Father, LIkes Son? “We’re looking to do that in December some time, after we all drop our solos albums and go on tour,” explained Birdman. “We have a lot of songs we did before (Wayne) went (to jail), and we’ve been working since he came home. All we’ve got to do is pick. And Wayne likes to be fresh with our music, so we might wait… and just knock out 20 songs right quick and put those on the album.”

    1. 10,000 people attending? I guarantee 9,800 of them are below the age of 12, and 10,000 of them have an incredibly low IQ. Lil Wayne was bad to begin with, but now he’s become a wack disaster.

      1. @G. I agree, when he came to NY, all the wanna be ghetto ass kids in my typical suburban jewish school went. His musical content is extremely exiguous and repitive compared to artist like Lupe, J. Cole, Ye, etc. They stay creative with profound subject matter and catchy and orginal shit. Nothing really good about Wayne, same old dumb catch phrase about how much money he got, the girl he did last night, Cash money young money this and that bullshit, i got a ferrari. As a artist i respect him, he made it and he successful but as a rapper i dont, he is diluting the art of rapping and brainwashing all suburban kids. I know hip hop/rap is entertainment but he really nothing meaningful or creative that rapper and hip hop artist should bring. Autotune, having ghostwriters, and stealing lines from other rappers isnt good at all, im not a hater,i told u my reasons.

      2. Yeah or teenage girls… I saw Slaughterhouse @ Paid Dues last night, now thats a real gig.

      3. @Anonymous- In the rap industry today it is early the opposite, the ones making the money usually the ones destroying hip-hop and just making it into a stereotypical Afrocentric environment that has three principal things, bitches, money, and drugs. But not necessarily are all big money makers are bad, like Jay-Z and Eminem. Usually the ones who dont make as much a Young Money are the ones being creative, diverse, intricate, and while being catchy. Ym doesn’t possess those qualities, they are driven my money while others like Lupe and Nas are driven my the mentality of the fans and whats important rather than materialistic gains. In a speech before performing “shining Down” Lupe said how the record company didnt push for this album yet it was needed, radio needs to get over the fear of putting concious songs, because the public needs them and then says “We dont care about money or nuthin like that, we dont care about fame, we dont care about being the interent in front of some stupid ass talking about what they wanted or their breakfest….we are going to shine God dammit, with or without your muthafucking support, we are going to shine..” Thats some real stuff. YM doesnt do that

      4. YOUNG MONEY DESTROYS THE HIP HOP AND A PART OF THE BLACK CULTURE, BITCH-MONEY-CARS-WHITE DRUGS ,THAT S ALL YOU CAN FIND IN THEIR LYRICS,THEY R NOT HERE TO OPEN YOURS MINDS BUT LIKE BUSH,REPUBLICANS,KKK,CIA,ETC.,THEY R KILLING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY!!!!
HIP HOP OR HIP POP??OPEN YOUR EYES!!WHY THE MUSIC COMMERCIAL INDUSTRY IS BEHIND WAYNE,BECAUSE HE SAYS NOTHING,JUST BULLSHITS,ASK LUPE…
DO YOU REMEMBER BIGGIE,TUPAC,BIG L??DO YOU LISTEN NAS,IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE,THE WU,MOBB DEEP,DMX…YOU MUST DO SOMETHING FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH!!!!

    2. I don’t know about IQ, or age, but I am 36, College educated & runa a company & I like Lil wayne’s style. Looking forward to Carter Iv

      1. I’m college educated too. But I’m a Lil Wayne fan anymore. As a person grows, so their taste of music changes also.

      2. “Shame the college you both went to did not teach you to spell nor grammar.”

That is inproper grammar. You mean to say “Shame the college you both went to did not teach you to spell nor use proper grammar.”

      3. Or you can say “teach you spelling nor grammar.” But you can’t say “teach you to spell nor grammar.” Bottom line – you can’t connect a verb and a noun using “nor”. You have to use 2 verbs or 2 nouns. So next time, don’t criticize someone else’s grammar when you know nothing about grammar.

    3. i really dont get all the hate on wayne like dude gets.. he aint the best ever but dude can spit really damn good…

      1. Your opinion is useless. Do you think you will stop Wayne from selling out shows everywhere he goes and selling millions of albums? Obviously not. So why waste your time, to no avail?

      2. you think wayne’s gonna pay your bills? hop the fuck off his dick and get it through your cocksuckin brain that quality is NOT synonimous with quantity. you listen to garbage for 12 year olds.

      3. @jason, you could give porn stars a few lessons in dickriding. fuckin cunt. you trollin the anti-wayne vids on youtube, ok the ANTI-wayne vids and get owned basically by every nigga that responds to your stupid rants and let’s not forget…you blocked me.

      4. In my opinion, Drake is killing Wayne on all levels. His intellectual flow is somewhat refreshing. I am not saying he is the greateest, but the nigga be saying some shit in his verses. That nigga wayne be poppin off like a damn snapping turtle. I be like this muahphucka always talkin the same shit. “Ima this,…. like that.” Dont think hes great cuase he took the like word out. Drake has this nigga beat lyrically hands down. PUT ANY SONG DRAKE DID UP AGAINST ANY SONG WAYNE DID AND I BET YA DRAKE SMASHES WAYNE HEAD TO HEAD. I would love to see them go at it. Drakes flows just have WAYYYYY more meaning than that bullshit Wayne be saying.

      1. Yup your right, being that Wayne fans only bring up things like how he sells millions and sells out shows. it doesnt mean it is good, if you go look down, you can see some of my reasons. Its not about the quantity bro, its about quality which if Wayne fans like you could sense, wouldnt think he is good

      2. LOL @ hellrazor. Not only do you hate on Wayne on youtube all day long, but you troll on HipHopDX too? Get a life you pathetic loser. Wayne is better than you and your favorite rapper. That’s all there is to it.

      3. “Yup your right, being that Wayne fans only bring up things like how he sells millions and sells out shows. it doesnt mean it is good” – It means that those millions of people think he is good. It means that YOU don’t think he’s good. Music is entirely SUBJECTIVE. Everyone has different music tastes. Just because YOU don’t think Wayne is good, doesn’t mean that he isn’t good

      4. Jason couldnt have put it better… and why the fuck would yall read this and comment knowin you dont listen to wayne?? skip over it muthafucka.. yall niggas stupid… for real for real… he gon make music if yall listen or not… so dont speak on it if you dont like it..

      5. @jason, you kneel every night hopin lil wayne notices you like a fuckin girl? the object of yout affection cant rap for shit. if 2pac, biggie or big l were alive…lil wendy would be flippin burgers, FAGGOT!

p.s. write some bullshit on my youtube channel, you trollin the antiwayne vids? you lead a sad fuckin life if you bring that shit up

      6. ^^^^This guy is hilarious, if you hate Wayne, WHY CLICK ON THE ARTICLE IN THE 1ST PLACE, LET ALONE LEAVE A COMMENT?

    4. While I like lil Wayne the stuff he has put out lately has not been really good but I’m not gonna hate on him cuz he went mainstream to get money which in my opinion is smart,I think ppl forget how long he’s been rapping an how cash Money fell off 4 a while an was struggling..as long as he still makes fire mix tapes I’m content..kno1 can deny how good his mix tapes have an prolly will always be.

      1. Exactly, Wayne’s mixtapes are classic. Dedication 1 and 2, Da Drought 3, Tha Carter 3 Sessions, No Ceilings.

    5. how the fukk does birdman sell records…his shit is corny…just like the birdman shoes and lugs he tried comin out wit….like ed lover said…come on SON
      !!

    6. Some tell me why you like Lil Wayne because I don’t understand it. After you give an answer look up Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders, Nas’ Illmatic listen to it for a couple weeks, listen to the lyrics, creativity and beats. Then come back and tell me if you still think Lil Wayne is good after that.

      1. Lol at you STILL listening to old ass music from the 90’s stop dwelling on the past that shit is over

      2. Yes I still listen to 90’s hip hop because the music had such creativity to it, the lyrics are sick, the beats are some of the best period. I listen mostly to the golden age of hip hop 88′,’89,’92-’95. I also listen to it because nothing new even comes close to those albums during that time period. I know people are going to say I’m too old then, I’m 19, I just would rather listen to higher quality music.

      3. How is wayne not creative?? you must be one of those niggas that hate the south.. i know you are… those niggas rapped about the same shit people rap about today. what they got. what life was like before they was rich. bitches drugs robbin people.. its all da same. stop region hatin…

      4. I’m from Maryland, that is sometimes considered part of the south so why would I hate on the south. My problem is that Lil Wayne’s lyrics don’t make sense, he has to use like so many times just so it will rhyme, he re-uses rhymes all the time. I’ll admit people did rap about those things but they also we’re telling stories while talking about it and they had songs that weren’t about money, drugs or sex. Also by saying that Lil Wayne is following the artists from the 90’s concepts that he isn’t creative because he’s following what they did.

      5. you from maryland but you put NY? ok… Who say maryland is “part of the south”??
you right.. he say like to much. idk bout the reusing.. and if thats the case nobody is original…

      6. your an idiot, maryland in no way shape or form is the south. and why do i like Wayne, Cause I LIKE WAYNE DAMMIT, and i dont give two shits about a tribe called quest so SUE me, for liking something or someone that you dont, you dont need to understand why i like him, i DO so blow these balls yeh faggot asss bitch

      7. ill give u 1 example…listen closely to “i want this forever” by wayne and drake and etc. u might even have to look at the lyrics along with it..his creativity blew my mind “why should i scream for? this is my theme park” (talking about the rap game)and thats just 1 example..and u cant believe u didnt list big L in ur shitty rant fuck u

      8. @NY

I agree with you compeltly,so much good music back in the 90’s but there some good shit out now too, maybe not as many lyrically skilled rappers but creativity is there. Like J.Cole and Krit, those are some sick rappers.

I like Lil Wayne and some of his stuff, but he does out out lots of trash but he’s still a good rapper.

You want intellectual rap? Binary Star -Masters of the Universe

    7. i grew up broke like every other rapper.. had shit rubbed in my face.. all da silver spoon kids talkin shit bout yo clothes.. niggas tryna stunt and treatin you like you aint shit… bitches doggin you… so why wouldnt a nigga get rich and get what he want? the rappers who grew up a lil more fortunate cant talk about what other rappers talk about cuz thats not they life… not everybody trap and not everybody go to college.. so why be mad at the nigga who never had shit for gettin and bein so happy about it he wanna put it in his song?? why be mad at the nigga that rap but went the good route and never had to do dirt?? yall niggas turnin against each other for nothin and its sad bruh.. congratulate that nigga for comin up and gettin rich.. cuz if you did you wouldnt want people hatin on you…

    8. I’ve pretty much learned not to believe pretty much anything that Baby says. I think only 10% of what he says actually comes to fruition

    9. Wayne is the hottest rapper out now. Period. So what he raps about bitches, money, and cars the rhymes are still tight. I like Talib and Lupe and all them niggas but if everybody rapped like them shit would be boring.

Wayne ain’t poisoning kids minds, it’s all the punk ass niggas and females not taking care of they seeds. Like Pac said “you punks having babies can’t raise tha niggas”. If you letting Lil Wayne raise ya child it’s your damn fault, not his. Teach ya kids to enjoy entertainment but also show and teach them real shit like math, science, history, and morals. But na we always to busy blaming shit on some rap artist or blaming shit on the government or somebody because they didn’t give you a hand out. I’m just saying…..

      1. “I like Talib and Lupe and all them niggas but if everybody rapped like them shit would be boring.”

It would only be boring because your brain is the size of a pea and you can only relate to money, cars, and hoes. What a clown.

      2. You Lame, u stupid bro. What South said is real. I listen to weezy but i dont take everything to heart. Everyone in rap has their own lane. Listen to tie my hands. Not shit about cars, bitches, or drugs. Just holding down the N.O. Thats some real shit. Weezy still tight in my book.

    10. Everyone has their own taste of music, and who they like. If you like Tunechi, good for you, he’s a mainstream rapper that’s popular right now. If you don’t like him, hell with it. He’s still going to be a popular rapper. That’s why music is all about opinions, that’s why there’s more than just one rapper in the game.

    11. Wayne got bars if you listen 2 rap jus respect it. He raps about evetything his sucess, bad times, and good. Just check his rap sheet he has alot of music.Im tired of people hatin sayin only kids fuck with wayne. Im 22 been listening since cash money started and his music up until dat rock shit has been aimed for the streets.

    12. sure lil gayne may have had hiz highest grossin tour, but he never gon sell out madison square garden like jay-z! did. when he doez dat shit, holla at me. and turdman needz 2 shut hiz faggot azz up.

RNGMB BITCH! FUCK CMFMB! (cum money/fag money ballickaz)

HIP HOP OR HIP POP??OPEN YOUR EYES!!WHY THE MUSIC COMMERCIAL INDUSTRY IS BEHIND WAYNE,BECAUSE HE SAYS NOTHING,JUST BULLSHITS,ASK LUPE OR DMX…
DO YOU REMEMBER BIGGIE,TUPAC,BIG L??DO YOU LISTEN NAS,IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE,THE WU,MOBB DEEP,THE ROOTS…YOU MUST DO SOMETHING FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH!!!!

      1. WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM?ONE REPUBLICAN AND EN OTHER DEMOCRAT,BUT BOTH GREEN!!!JUST AN OTHER PUPPET….

      2. Look I don’t like YM aside from Drake and some Lil Wayne songs but that was ignorant at its finest. Funny you praise Nas as anti-illuminati but yet he made a song with Lil Wayne and praised him a couple of times. Lupe Fiasco had Kane Beatz produced his hit single who also produced Bedrock and Right Above It. Alo Wu Tang Clan and The Roots are straight out 5 percenters meaning they support black freemasonary. I don’t hate on the artist you like but you sound very narrow minded.

    14. New York & West coast rappers were doing gangsta rap way before the south even went mainstream so kill all that bullshit.

Don’t try and get righteous and start hating now just because yo lame ass aint on top anymore!!!!!

ITS YOUR OWN FOUGHT YOUR SHIT AIN’T SELLING!!!

      1. The South is so whack. They don’t even make music. They makes dumb noises with random words. FUCK ThA SOUTH

      2. YOU REALLY REPRESENT THE SOUTH,YOU ARE SO STUPID!!!GO BUY AN OTHER LIL WAYNE,TURN OFF YOUR MIND,AND BLOW YOUR WHITES CLASSMATES…PATHETIC
