Houston rapper Devin The Dude is set to make his formal acting debut in the comedy flick Hillbilly Highway, produced by veteran comedian/actor Eddie Griffin and directed by Damon “Coke” Daniels.
Seemingly right up Devin’s alley, the premise behind Hillbilly Highway revolves around two brothers seeking “marijuana nirvana” on a road trip to Kentucky that turns into an unexpected adventure. Comedian Lil Duval will handle the other lead sibling role as Gary Owen, Erik Estrada and Jasmine Burke, among others, round out the remaining cast.
Giving praise to Daniels’ work behind the camera, Eddie Griffin stated, “Hillbilly Highway is really going to take people by surprise. We have a fantastic team and working with Damon ‘Coke’ Daniels has been a great experience. I can’t wait for the camera to stop rolling so I can see the finished product.”
Production for Hillbilly Highway is expected to finish this week, with a release date unconfirmed at press time.
In other news, Chicago artist Common continues his acting career with the AMC television series Hell On Wheels.
Based around the creation of the Transcontinental Railroad, Common plays Elam, a half-black, half-white freed slave who travels west to Nebraska to seek work following the end of the Civil War. Actors Anson Mount and Dominique McEllingott have also signed on for the new western series.
Heralding Common’s past track record in feature films, AMC’s senior vice president Joel Stillerman explained, “Common brings a layered intensity to a very complex role. This part required someone who can transcend the stereotypes of the period and bring the character to life in a truly unique way, and he brings that.”
Production and filming for the series will begin next month in Alberta, Canada.
Finally, Atlanta rapper Big Boi has teamed up with Converse shoes to release a limited run of high top “Sir Lucious Leftfoot” signature Chuck Taylors.Comparing his music to the legacy behind the revered shoe brand, Big Boi said, “You know what you’re getting when you get them; that’s how I look at my music. Timeless classics, they never go out of style.”
Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son Of Chico Dusty is in stores now.
…well…this is…news?
devin, yes, because dude is the ish. but, common? most of his movie roles have been stereotypes of black men (ironic because he’s on that conscious tip rap-wise)
I’m still waitin’ for Tarantino’s slavery epic, A Southern. It’d be cool to see QT’s idiosyncratic take on the topic. Only Common flicks I was feelin’ was Smokin’ Aces and American Gangster, but he only played peripheral roles in them, so they would’ve been cool without him.
great.
